A powerful union group declared a war in the US Treasury Department and filed a lawsuit yesterday blocking Elon Musk’s Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing confidential and personal information.
The union is seeking an immediate court order to hit the brakes on access to Elon’s federal payment system, and the Treasury Department has brought Elon’s team to its national confidential data, including records relating to taxpayers, federal employees and businesses. He said he had illegally handed over the key to the
The lawsuit comes after Scott Bescent, who now heads the Treasury Department, approved access. The lawsuit requires that data already collected by Doge be retrieved and locked forever.
Elon’s team has been on the mission of stealing waste from government spending and drug federal technology systems into the 21st century ever since President Donald Trump signed DOGE’s executive order on January 22nd. I did.
Financial payment system at the heart of the debate
According to the union’s lawsuit, the systems handle more than 1.2 billion federal transactions per year covering everything from Social Security benefits to Medicare payments and defense contracts.
The complaint alleges that Elon was granted access shortly after David Lebrick, the acting assistant secretary of the Treasury, suddenly quit after years of working for the Treasury, and assisted in overseeing the payment process. The union uses his departure as proof that something is not right.
“Our members’ privacy has been infringed and once the damage is over, it cannot be reversed,” their court filing said. Treasury officials are not in a hurry to apologise precisely. In fact, they defend the decision, claiming that Elon’s team has only “read-only” access to “coded data.”
A Fox Business report said a Treasury spokesman told Congress that access is required for operational reviews but that it does not affect payments or give the system control over Doge. “A valid payment request is not blocked or delayed,” they said.
Congress calls for answers on Elon’s growth potential
Senator Patty Murray’s Congressional Democrats are coming down hard at the Treasury by placing Elon’s hands near the government’s finances. “When Elon boasts on X (formerly Twitter), why can Doge close payments to organizations he hates?” Murray asked.
She had mentioned Elon’s online post if Doge could stop paying for Lutheran Charity. Ministry of Finance defense? Tom Krause, CEO of Cloud Software Group and a key member of Doge, works as a special civil servant under stricter ethical guidelines than full-time federal employees.
Treasury Secretary Bessent says Krause’s role is standard and involves reviewing payment systems to make them more efficient. “He has read-only access, just like external auditors,” reads the Treasury statement.
Rep. Maxwell Frost went further by showing up at the Treasury Department, demanding the same access that Elon’s team had. “We’re here on behalf of our constituents,” Frost posted on X. His stunts didn’t work. White House communications director Stephen Chan actually laughed at him, calling him “another example of Democrats chasing the influence of social media instead of solving problems.”
