How does Pectra affect Ethereum?

Pectra combines two big updates, similar to Dencun upgrades. The first ones are Prague (executive layer or EL) and Electra (consensus layer or CL). Therefore, it offers many new Ethereum improvement proposals or EIPs. EIP is the formal process in which changes are proposed, discussed and implemented in the Ethereum blockchain.

Pectra is coming to Ethereum Testnet

Upgrades will be made public on Holesky on February 24th at Epoch 115968. Then, on March 5th, it will be activated at Epoch 222464 in Sepolia.

However, shortly after the Dencun upgrade, the developers began to discuss: Two main themes were account abstraction (AA) and improved validators and staking. The EIP-7702 introduces AAs, allowing externally owned accounts (EOAs) to be extended to smart contract addresses. EIP 6110, 7002, and 7251 improve user experience (UX) and remove delays between Deposits EL and CL.

One of the most important EIPs was 7691, known as “Increasing Blob Sultput”. Increased scalability of Ethereum by increasing the number of data blobs per block. Additionally, this provides an L2 rollup scaling solution that depends on Ethereum’s data capacity.

In fact, this helps with large fees and long waits to complete the transaction. Additionally, changes to UX will be more user-friendly for retail investors. This makes the Ethereum blockchain easier and also helps developers to create more efficient apps. The main goal is to enhance security and improve scalability without compromising decentralization.

Plus, there are three different testnets that prepare you for the main upgrade of Pectra in a way.

Holesky, Sepolia, Hoodie

Each of them are all responsible for different roles.

Holesky TestNet was launched in September 2023 and its purpose is to verify the provider. It serves as a playground for testing staking mechanisms and infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, Sepolia is focused on providing better tools and applications to developers. Provides a better environment for experimenting with distributed applications (DAPP). It was released on March 5th, 2025.

Hoodi TestNet was recently released on March 17th, 2025. In a way, Hoodi serves the same purpose as Holesky, but it’s a better version and follows Holesky. It’s the final testnet before launching the Pectra upgrade, taking on the role of Holesky in more upgrades.

The new Testnet Hoodie is live! Testnets are intended to be a stable location for operators and infrastructure providers to test.
