Governor Johnson Asiama of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) announced that the central bank plans to begin regulating cryptocurrencies and related platforms by the end of September 2025, waiting for the passage of the Virtual Asset Providers Act. Speaking in Washington, DC, Asiama says BOG has established a dedicated digital asset unit and realizes that the technology cannot be prevented. The move contrasts with Bog’s 2018 announcement, which opposed the use of cryptocurrency under Ghanaian law. ASIAMA also discussed broader strategies to improve trade and investment in the US and Africa, highlighting macroeconomic reliability, strategic autonomy, financial system resilience, and risk mitigation. Ghana’s Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission had previously shown progress in establishing a framework for cryptocurrency regulation.
