Christopher Wong, a former FBI director special agent and a leading figure in the agency’s cryptocurrency research, joined blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs.
“Chris is not only one of the world’s most talented and respected investigators, but he is also an inspiring colleague who makes everyone around him better,” Ari Redbord, global policy director at TRM Labs, told Coindesk. “He has been an important part of the elite team throughout his career and now brings the same excellence to our mission at TRM.”
During his decade with the FBI, Wong has worked on some of the most high-stakes crypto crime cases ever. He co-led the 2016 Bitfinex Hack investigation, bringing the largest code attack in US history to $3.6 billion.
He also played a central role in investigating the $600 million Axie Infinity Ronin Bridge violation linked to the North Korean Lazarus group. The attack prompted the first US sanctions on Crypto Mixing Services, and helped redefine how US agencies respond to cyber threats involving Crypto.
One of Wong’s latest major cases regarding the FBI involved tracking $7.7 million in Crypto, tied to the North Korean IT Workers’ Laundry Scheme. His efforts revealed how the operatives fake their identity to gain employment in the global technology industry, then pulling revenue back to Pyongyang.
Wong is currently a global investigator at TRM Labs, with the aim of disrupting criminal code activities.
“I look forward to learning from Chris because he helps clients and partners stop illegal actors from exploiting transformational technology,” Redboard said.
