Amy Gleason has been appointed acting manager for Doge, but no one knows what she actually does. The White House made the announcement, but when asked for details, no officials were found.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, a mere special government employee, is still called the person in charge. Even Donald Trump called Doge “led by Elon Musk,” and raised new legal questions about who actually runs the agency.
It took the administration several weeks for Amy to confirm his role. The White House representative lawyers were unable to answer who was actually in charge.

Since then, she has not issued an official statement, nor has neither the Doge nor the White House provide real insights into what is happening within the agency. Elon is constantly pushing for the idea of transparency, but Doge is operating in the darkness.
If Amy is supposed to lead the Doge, Elon isn’t acting that way. The billionaires still seem to control the agency’s direction, despite not having technically top jobs.
His special government official status allows him to be involved without officially taking charge, and avoids many regulations that apply to someone who is normally in his position.
The White House silence on this only fuel fuel speculation. If Amy is leading an agency, why doesn’t she answer the questions? If Elon isn’t, why does Trump keep saying he is?
“He’s exactly the kind of person who needs this role,” says Dr. Greg Alexander, a pediatrician in London, Ohio, who has known Amy for almost 20 years. But some believe in her abilities, while others worry that she is unconsciously promoting budget cuts for the federal health program she once supported.
Amy’s past in healthcare and government technology
Before Doge, Amy spent years in medical technology. She started as an ER nurse, but when her daughter Morgan began to show unexplained muscle weakness and rash, she realized that the system was not built to properly track complex cases. It took me over a year to get a diagnosis: juvenile dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease.
That experience has pushed Amy into health data technology. She co-founded Caresync, a company that worked on medical records management, and later joined U.S. Digital Services, an agency for both the Trump and Biden administrations. She worked on electronic medical records and pandemic response data to help improve healthcare tracking tools.
“If you’ve seen doctors put together all of these visits and their activities on one screen, they’re probably wondering if this 10 or 11 year old would always go to the doctor,” Amy said in a 2020 TEDX talk.
From 2021 to 2024, she served as executive roles at two health-centric startups, Main Street Health and Russell Street Ventures. The connection with Russell Street Ventures is noteworthy as its founder, Brad Smith, was an early Doge Insider and a key figure in Elon’s agency’s cost-cutting plan.
Potential impact on Doge’s health funds
Now, Amy is in a position that could affect the programs she once fought. Doge is proposing major budget cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
James Minow, executive director of the Cure JM Foundation, said Amy was once a member of the board of directors. “Obviously, Cure JM wants to do everything possible to protect NIH’s investments.”
Despite being said to be apolitical, Amy currently works within an institution that is openly promoting government reduction. Some of her previous colleagues say they were shocked by her appointment. One healthy IT worker who has known Amy for 15 years said, “To go to a position that excludes the work of thousands of working parents from such a position of kindness seems like such a dichotomy of value.”
Her career has always been about healthcare efficiency, but now she leads an agency that could cut down on important research. It remains unclear whether she actually has a statement or whether Elon is making the real call. What’s certain is that Doge hasn’t answered the questions.
