Blockchain Sluce ZACHXBT discovered the famous social engineering attack on Thursday, with the victim losing 783 BTC worth around $91.4 million.
The scam occurred on August 19th, when attackers were posing as support agents for hardware wallets before handing over the wallet credentials to the victim.
The attack reflects a series of social engineering attacks over the past year, contributing to a disastrous year in terms of hacking and fraud, with crypto investors losing $3.1 billion in the first half of 2025.

Once the malicious transfer took place, the funds began their journey through the typical laundry process. Multiple deposits have become Wasabi Wallet, a commonly used privacy tool to obfuscate trails.
The hack came exactly a year after the theft of a $243 million Genesis creditor. This is a landmark event that caused a stir throughout the industry and arrested 12 people in California in May.
