According to a new report in the Bloomberg Act, the U.S. Treasury has concluded its legal appeal regarding the enforcement of tornado cash sanctions following a district court ruling that deemed the original duties unenforceable.
Coincenter and federal authorities jointly filed a denial of the appeal before the 11th Circuit Court. The 11th Circuit granted the motion today, nullifying the previous ruling and ordered the firing of the case.
The appeal was concentrated on whether the Ministry of Finance’s Foreign Assets Control Bureau (OFAC) exceeded its authority by imposing sanctions on Tornado Cash, a mixed-crypto software developed by Russia. The discussion was presented in November 2024, but the court did not issue a ruling as government policy reversals became unnecessary.
As a result of the government’s decision, the sanctions guidance on tornado cash will no longer be enforced.
