Dutch and American law enforcement have shut down the online fake identity marketplace Veriftools.
According to press release The Dutch Cybercrime Police, issued Thursday, gained control of two physical data servers in Amsterdam and seized control of 21 virtual servers.
They worked in collaboration with the FBI. Two domains used by Veriftools Marketplace have been seizedNot just a promotional blog.
The Dutch expertise centre for both the FBI and ID fraud and documentation conducted a Veriftools investigation, which determined that the market generated approximately $6.4 million in revenue.
Similarly, Dutch authorities estimate Veriftools’ annual turnover is around 1.3 million euros (approximately $1.5 million), making it one of the largest providers of fraudulent identity documents internationally.
The market reportedly worked by asking users to upload passport photos and enter incorrect data. This was used by the site operator to generate the wrong ID. FBI agents were able to order fake driver’s licenses in New Mexico and used code to pay for the counterfeit ID, but no specific coins were identified.
Once delivered, fake IDs are often used to bypass KYC Safeguards or commit fraud. Wales police encounter Veriftools markets during the course of fraud investigations.
The Veriftools URL now directs your browser to a splash page. This announces that the website has been seized by law enforcement in the Netherlands and America.
“This market removal is a major step in protecting the public from fraud and identity theft crimes,” said Philip Russell, special agent in charge of the FBI Albuquerque Division. “With our partners, we will continue to target and dismantle the platforms that criminals rely on, no matter where they run.”
Dutch police reported in a press release that they will continue to investigate data found on seized servers and use it to find Veriftools administrators.
Experts say that the production and distribution of fake IDs is not only becoming a large company, but is growing rapidly.
“While it’s difficult to pinpoint accurate numbers given the illegal nature of trade, most estimates place a global fake identity market somewhere in the billions of dollars,” said Kartik Venkatesh, global head of innovation at Identity Technology Firm GBG.
Venkatesh said Decryption Today’s fake IDs are far more refined than the “coarse” imitations of the past decades, using industrial-level machines and micrometer-thick laminates.
“Many contain holograms, polycarbonate layers, barcodes that scan correctly, and UV-reactive inks, making them indistinguishable from real documents without specialized equipment,” he explained.
And it was the rise in demand that fueled this leap in quality, which provided the conditions for the “prosperous” illegal markets of tools and technology. Includes the generated ID in the AI.
“Currently, production is smooth and international, and there is a website similar to a professional e-commerce store,” he said. “Buyers will upload details, pay in cryptocurrency, and receive fakes hidden inside everyday items.”
In fact, Venkatesh reports that some sellers may even provide return policies, guarantees, and guidance on how to use their IDs with confidence.
In his advantage, the solution to the growth of fake ID marketplaces is to invest in sophisticated ID verification systems that help some businesses and authorities detect counterfeit products.
“By overlapping document analysis, facial biometrics, activity detection and behavioral signals, we can spot inconsistencies that are invisible to human testing,” he said.
He also suggests that digital IDs have difficulty forging due to their encryption design, but they can play a long-term role as they can be instantly verified by issuing authorities.
However, they also allow selective disclosure, but Venkatesh warned that digital identity attracts its own form of abuse. He said “a synthetic ID that was caught up in theft of someone’s call or ID wallet if someone’s phone or ID wallet is compromised from Deepfake Biometrics, designed to trick real and fake data and comfortable checks.”
For this reason, he claimed that the future exists in “balance” and layered checks.
“Digital IDs can raise the bar for scammers,” he said.
