Two members of the gang were jailed in the UK on Tuesday after being stolen from the amount stolen using Crypto.
Valeriy Popovych, 52, and Vitaliy Lutsak, 43, were convicted at Wood Green Crown Court on Monday, April 7th, after a five-week trial.
The gang member was sentenced to 13 years in prison for more than £6 million ($7.6 million) of laundry. A portion of that money was used to buy a second London home for less than £1 million ($1.27 million).
Oksana Popovich, 42, the third member and Valerie’s wife, is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, May 30th.
In February, the fourth person, Semen Kuksov, was sentenced to more than five years in prison. Kuksov controlled some of the cash that had been washed, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.
The code was achieved by exploiting the demand for Ukrainian vans and trucks as part of a war effort. These were purchased using criminal money.
The lack of cryptocurrency regulations allowed the gang to maximize profits and earn millions in just one year.
Following an investigation by metropolitan police, the gang was found guilty of transferring criminal property and running an unregistered money service business.
During the investigation, British police discovered more than $14 million in cryptocurrency that had passed through crypto wallets stored in computers.
Officer Harry Davis, Detective Officer Harry Davis, who led the investigation, said:
“Money laundering is not a casualty-free crime. It is a financial lifeline where criminals can benefit from illegal activities,” said Negen Mamatahen, a specialized prosecutor at the Crown Prosecutor’s Office.
“Last year we convicted other key members of this same money laundering network and hope that this latest prosecutor will demonstrate our continued determination to dismantle these criminal operations and bring all involved to justice.”
