The UK government has signed an agreement with OpenAI to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) tools could be used in areas like healthcare, law, defence, and education.
The deal, confirmed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and UK Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, outlines a shared plan to bring AI into both public services and the economy industry.
The agreement is part of the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and focuses on helping civil servants work more efficiently and making government services more accessible. It also includes plans to look at how AI could support the justice system, improve security, and strengthen education tools.

The partnership will involve technical support, infrastructure planning, and discussions about how AI can bring practical value to daily services.
According to a July 21 press release by OpenAI, Kyle said:
AI will be fundamental in driving the change we need to see across the country, whether that is in fixing the NHS, breaking down barriers to opportunity or driving economic growth.
He added that “this cannot be achieved without companies like OpenAI”.
Additionally, Altman noted, “Britain has a strong legacy of scientific leadership and its Government was one of the first to recognize the potential of AI through its AI Opportunities Action Plan”.
He added that the current focus is to turn early plans into real-world actions that benefit people and the economy.
