President Trump expressed his desire to retain Elon Musk’s services as special government officials “as much as possible,” but admitted that technology executives may need to ultimately return to his business responsibility.
“At some point, he’ll want to go back to his company,” Trump told reporters Monday. He admitted that Musk has a “large company that operates.”
The president also indicated that his Cabinet Secretary will continue his work at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has implemented substantial cuts in the federal workforce as part of an effort to reduce federal bureaucratic costs.
Trump issued an executive order in January to establish Doge, following the mask proposal last year. The department’s goal was to save $1 trillion in tax expenditures. In the latest update, the agency claimed it saved about $140 billion.

Doge is widely believed to be linked to Dogecoin, Internet Meme Crypto, given Musk endorsed support for Crypto and references to the acronym. “Doge” memes were once integrated into agency websites.
But on Sunday, Musk Confirmed Neither Doge nor the US government planned to use Dogecoin. The name was simply the result of general input.
Musk confirmed plans to resign from his agency role in late May 2025. The departure plan is as Tesla faces challenges including protests, stock declines and vandalism targeting facilities.
