US President Donald Trump said tech billionaire Elon Musk will face “very serious consequences” if he funds Democratic candidates to lawmakers who support the large Republican budget bill.
“If he did, he would pay for it,” Trump told NBC News over the phone. However, he refused to elaborate on what those “consequences” would turn out. Trump later repeated his words, “There will be very serious consequences.”
Trump also made it clear that he doesn’t want to repair his relationship with Musk. “I’m not going to repair my relationship with him,” he replied, “I think so.”
Tensions between Trump and Musk came to the forefront at the beginning of the week with mutual threats and accusations over social media platform X and Truth Social, but reached a new level with these statements by the president. Trump argued that Republicans have followed the tensions have become more unified than ever.
Trump, who said he had no plans to meet Musk in the short term, added, “I’m busy with other things,” adding, “I’m not going to talk to him.” He also accused Musk of disrespectfulness of the presidency. “This is a very bad thing. He’s a huge rude thing for the presidency.”
In response to a call from conservative figures that business transactions and immigration records for masks should be investigated at the federal level, he said: “That’s not on my agenda right now.”
Trump also said he doesn’t believe masks oppose the budget bill, called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
Elon Musk, who gave President Trump’s massive financial support in the 2024 election, has donated more than $500 million to campaigns in key states. In the early months of the Trump administration, Musk was appointed head of “government efficiency” and implemented a comprehensive government downsizing policy.
