Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) said he was shocked after developers participating in Token2049 Singapore claimed to have been attacked and robbed late last week.
The report upset many in the crypto community, given Singapore’s reputation as one of the safest cities in the world.
Wow, Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world. I was shocked that something like this could happen. Rest assured, fellow cryptocurrencies.
And please get well soon. 🙏

Developer says he was attacked after the event
On October 3, software entrepreneur Nate Guyer took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a photo showing severe bruising on one side of his face, writing:
“Think of yourself as an experienced traveler. Remember that you woke up in the hospital. It was very scary. You must have been jumped on the way home. Your passport and ring are missing. Be careful on Token2049.”
Geyer said he has filed a police report and scheduled a follow-up meeting with authorities for Oct. 6. “A police report was filed yesterday,” he acknowledged in a later post, saying he would visit police headquarters on October 6 for further updates.
Mixed reactions from the crypto crowd
Many wished him a speedy recovery, but skepticism quickly spread online. Several users questioned the legitimacy of his account, pointing out that Singapore is “one of the safest countries in the world” with extensive surveillance coverage. Some demanded proof that the robbery had actually occurred.

Those who spoke out included former Binance CEO Qiao Changpeng (CZ), who expressed disbelief at the claim. “Wow, Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world. Shocking that something like this would happen there. Stay safe, crypto friends. And get well soon,” Zhao wrote to X.
Geyer responded to CZ’s message, thanking him for his concern and informing him that police are investigating the matter.
Singapore’s role in global cryptocurrencies
The alleged attack comes as Singapore solidifies its position as the world’s most crypto-active country. A recent report from ApeX Protocol ranked Singapore as the number one “crypto-obsessed” country, with 24.4% of the population owning digital assets and more than 2,000 crypto-related searches per 100,000 people.
A new ApeX protocol report has named Singapore and the UAE the most “crypto-obsessed” countries in the world. Based on ownership, growth, search, and ATMs, Singapore scores out of 100 and UAE scores 99.7. The United States follows in third place with a score of 98.5.
