Thai police have arrested a Korean citizen suspected of washing illegal cryptocurrency more than $50 million for the fraudster by converting it into money.
summary
- Han, a Korean citizen, has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering.
- In just three months, Han is said to have converted $47 million in USDT into gold.
The 33-year-old suspect, identified as Han, was taken into custody at Suvarnabumi Airport in Thailand on August 23. Han was said to have played a central role in the call centre fraud gang laundry fund by acting as a financial conduit in cross-border operations using crypto to buy golden bars.
Authorities say Crypto wallets linked to processed HANs exceeding 47 million USDT between January and March 2024. These funds were used to buy gold in at least 30 separate transactions, each transaction containing more than 10 kilograms of gold.
Investigators in Thailand’s Technical Crime Control Division suspect that Han worked closely with foreign gold vendors to promote cargo against unidentified fraud operatives. His phone, recovered during his arrest, was found to have access to multiple cryptocurrency accounts and wallet logs that matched large-scale laundry activities.

Han told investigators he studied in China for six years before getting a job with a Korean company specializing in turning illegal digital assets into hard commodities.
Investigators believe his activities are related to the broader network of fraud call centres that were active in 2024. Fraud networks operate with opportunities to make money for victims by performing simple online tasks that were initially paid.
However, when the scammers escalate the pitch, the actual fraud unfolds, with promising victims pledging a 30% to 50% return on investment in crypto-based “projects.” Eventually, investors will find their accounts frozen and their withdrawals have been denied.
Ten arrests, more hopeful
Before Han’s capture, Thai police had already made 10 arrests in connection with the fraud. Five of the suspects were accused of washing the money, while others allegedly ran a mullba bank account that was used to collect the victims’ deposits.
According to TCSD commander Pol General Ati Fonsiwapay, Han was sought for fraud, impersonation and money laundering charges.
For now, he remains in custody and investigators say they are looking into new leads found on devices recovered during their arrest.
The Thai investigation is consistent with a broader executive wave. Last month, a Beijing court sentenced seven people in a $20 million laundry case in which former video platform employees who embezzled the funds were involved and poured them in through eight offshore crypto exchanges.
The previous month, a Russian crypto entrepreneur was charged by the US Department of Justice for his role in enabling a $500 million crypto washing scheme.
