SPAR has begun accepting Bitcoin payments for Zug, Switzerland. Swiss progressive approach to adoption marks another milestone. This implementation uses the Lightning network through DFX Swiss’ OpenCryptopay solution to enable instant transactions at point of sale.
The location of the store in Zug, often referred to as “Crypto Valley,” reflects the embrace of Swiss technology. The country has emerged as a global leader in Bitcoin adoption, with cities such as Zug and Lugano’s support initiatives integrating Bitcoin into everyday trading.
In particular, Lugano made headlines with a “plan” initiative aimed at making Bitcoin the city’s de facto legal fiat currency. The plan, backed by Mayor Michele Foretti, has already enabled taxes, public services and Bitcoin payments to hundreds of local merchants. The city also partnered with Tether to establish the Technology Education Centre and the Startup Fund.
“This spare location is one of Switzerland’s first supermarkets, and you can pay directly at checkout using Bitcoin via LNURL,” DFX Switzerland announced. The implementation could pave the way for expansion across a network of SPARs with more than 13,900 stores across 48 countries, serving around 14.7 million customers every day.
Rahim Taghizadegan, director of Bitcoin Association Switzerland, demonstrated the simplicity of the system. This user-friendly approach is consistent with Switzerland’s vision of making Bitcoin transactions accessible to everyday consumers.
The country’s Bitcoin-friendly stance brings together many Bitcoin and crypto companies and initiatives. Beyond Switzerland and Lugano, Swiss cities are exploring similar programs supported by the robust banking sector that increasingly embraces Bitcoin.
Spar’s initiative is built on the foundation, joining other Swiss retailers and businesses to accept Bitcoin payments. This move could impact recruitment across the retail sector, particularly given Switzerland’s role as a model of Bitcoin integration in traditional finance and commerce.
