South Korea’s major industrial giants, Hyundai Group and Hyundai Motor Group, have been in the news for bomb threats and virtual currency threats sent via email.
A threatening message sent to the Hyundai Group and Hyundai Motor Group office buildings in Seoul claimed to blow up the building unless 13 Bitcoins were paid.
In addition to targeting existing buildings, the threat also included moving explosives to the Yangjae-dong area of Seoul to carry out additional attacks. After the incident, South Korean police went on high alert.
Special operations teams and bomb disposal units were dispatched to the area and an extensive search was conducted inside the building. No explosives have been found so far.
Officials announced that some areas were temporarily evacuated and entrances and exits were restricted for the safety of employees. Police officials said they were carefully examining digital evidence to determine the veracity of the threat and its source.
According to reports, the Hyundai incident may be part of a recent wave of similar threats targeting large Korean companies. Major technology and communications companies such as Samsung, KT, Kakao, and Naver have also reportedly received similar threatening emails recently.
Authorities stressed that such incidents pose a threat to public safety and announced that they would launch a major investigation to arrest the suspects. Police called on citizens and company employees to immediately report suspicious activities, and noted that international cooperation against extortion based on virtual currencies is also on the agenda.
