Perplexity, an artificial intelligence (AI) search company, has made its Comet browser available to everyone at no cost.
The company is also introducing a new feature for its Max subscribers: a background assistant that can manage several tasks at once while running in the background.
The background assistant was announced by CEO Aravind Srinivas. A spokesperson explained that the tool acts like a small team of helpers, all managed through a central dashboard.

The assistant can also connect with more apps on the computer, though further details about these integrations are still limited.
The main feature of Comet is a side assistant that sits alongside browsing activity. It can explain information on a page, shorten long content, manage web content, and even navigate across pages on behalf of the user.
The browser also includes a set of built-in tools. Discover shows tailored news and content, Spaces helps organize projects, Shopping compares prices across online stores, Travel gathers information about destinations and bookings, Finance assists with budgeting and investments, and Sports keeps track of scores and schedules.
Subscribers to the Max plan not only gain access to the background assistant but also benefit from stronger AI models. Their plan includes an email tool that drafts replies, sorts the inbox, schedules meetings, and answers questions about messages.
