One of the world’s most popular hardware wallet makers, Ledger has launched a new iteration of Flex flagship devices. Solana community.
The Ledger Flex Solana Edition offers exactly the same technical features as the off-rack Ledger Flex, released in July 2024. This includes an additional layer of user encryption security in the form of a self-supporting “cold wallet” that is not connected to the internet, but also includes additional features such as an E-ink touchscreen, Bluetooth, NFC connections, and operating system connections.
But what really adds value to the device is that it attracts Solana’s growing user base, said Ian Rogers, chief experience officer at Ledger. Decryption.
“This is one of those things that really focuses on the community. That’s how you say it, hey, I’m a member of the ledger Solana community.”
Buyers will not only receive custom Solana-themed colorways in their new blue and green wallets, but they will also receive what is called Soulbound Tokens (SBTs).
These SBTs are unique as they are non-mobility tokens that are not given to other parties or are not financialised after being created. They were joint drams by ETH founder Vitalik Buterin in a 2022 white paper, intended to represent the “commitments, qualifications, and affiliations” that constituted the social relationships of the Web3 world.
“Solana’s soulbound tokens show you that you are a Solana flex holder. It really shows you that you are an early adopter,” Rogers said.
Owners of these SBT tokens will receive reward airdrops in the future. Unfortunately, Rogers did not mention what these rewards were.
The new device will boot in four phases. The first phase, accompanied by a $70 Solana rebate and a black magnetic folio, is only available to those who already own Solana-based Soulbound tokens, such as Solana Saga and Solana Seeker Genesis Token Token Holders, Solana Mobile Pre-Order Token Holders, and Super Team Member SBT Holders.
The next device allocation includes a $50 voucher for magnetic folio and SoL, while the third allocation can be purchased by anyone who holds a SOL on Ledger Live, and includes a magnetic folio and just $20 SOL.
After the initial allocation is sold, it will be available as a general release at Ledger.com, with all orders including SBT.
More hardware targets the Solana community
The new hardware wallet is not the only device intended to use unique tokens to encourage engagement from the Solana community.
The second-generation Solana mobile phone, Solana Seeker, is scheduled to begin shipping worldwide on August 4th, courtesy of Solana Mobile. Like its predecessor, all seeker mobile phones ship with what is called Genesis NFT.
Indirectly, the owner of the soulbound token has received quite a large amount of financial compensation in the past.
When Solana Saga was released in December 2022, Token owners airbornely sprayed Memecoin Bonk worth around $300.
