A multi-agency investigation led by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the recovery of 1,000 hijacked Bitcoin mining machines worth approximately $700,000. The operation also thwarted an attempted theft of $75,000 worth of frozen turkeys.
The first report of cargo theft was filed on October 2 by Your Choice Ever Best, a Bitcoin mining company in Grant County, according to a media statement. The company reported that a semitrailer containing the rig had been hijacked. Sheriff’s Office detectives conducting the investigation located the stolen shipment in the Chicago area.
Grant County detectives then worked with the Joint Anti-Narcotics Task Force (JEAN) Team, the Drug Task Force (DTF), sheriff’s and Marion Police (Indiana) detectives, and the Chicago Police Department to conduct a sting operation that led to the recovery of the device last week. All 1,000 stolen machines have been recovered.
