This scam uses “smissing.” This uses tactics of impersonation to deceive the victim and encourages them to believe that the fraudulent message is justified.
Victims receive SMS for suspicious account activities and appear to be coming from trusted providers like Binance. SMS systems aggregate messages from what appears to be the same sender, so malformed messages merge with legitimate text to make them look authentic. The message requires the victim to call a number to “protect” the account.
When the victim calls, the scammers instruct them to transfer their funds to a “secure” wallet managed by the scammers. They send seed phrases via email, SMS text, fake websites, and even phones. Victims believe their funds are safe and that they will start transfers only to allow fraudsters to drain their wallets quickly, resulting in losses.
Susbarium has warned the Shiba Inu community not to call any number or provide personal information. Instead, communication should be validated at all times through formal binance channels.
Smishing Alert published by Binance
Alerts were released by Crypto Exchange Binan along a similar line over the weekend. In a blog post, Binance noted that phishing scams have evolved to include fraudulent SMS messages.
To address this, Binance said it is extending its anti-phishing code to SMS. It provides an additional layer of security by helping users to check the authenticity of their messages by displaying personalized, easily recognizable code.
As a precaution, Binance urges users to stay proactive by enabling the latest security features, staying up to date with emerging threats, and reporting suspicious messages to protect themselves and others.
Additionally, unexpected messages that encourage immediate action or requests for personal information should always be raised with a red flag. Scammers rely on urgency to make the victim wrong. Therefore, crypto users should pause, verify and think before they can act.
Do not click on the link in an SMS message if you think your message is legal. Instead, enter the URL of the official website in your browser manually to make sure it is on the correct platform.
