OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted that GPT-5, the company’s next artificial intelligence (AI) model, could be available in the coming months.
In the meantime, OpenAI plans to roll out GPT-4.5, known as “Orion”. On February 12, Altman shared an update on X, explaining that GPT-4.5 would be OpenAI’s last model without “chain-of-thought” reasoning.
“We will next ship GPT-4.5, the model we called Orion internally, as our last non-chain-of-thought model”, Altman said.

He also outlined the company’s goal: combining its GPT and o-series models into a single system capable of handling a wide range of tasks, adjusting its reasoning as needed. Altman stated:
In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model.
OpenAI’s o3 model is designed to improve reasoning and reduce errors in AI-generated content. On January 31, the company introduced the o3-mini, a smaller version aimed at enhancing accuracy in math, coding, and scientific tasks.
He also confirmed that GPT-5 would be available to free users, though with certain limits to prevent misuse. Those with premium or pro subscriptions will have access to a more advanced version of the model.
Altman did not provide an exact release date for either model but told a user on X that GPT-4.5 would arrive in weeks, while GPT-5 would follow in a few months.
Meanwhile, Altman recently dismissed Elon Musk’s attempt to acquire OpenAI with a sarcastic counteroffer. What did Altman say? Read the full story.
