Google’s AI Overview feature seems to respond differently when asked about Donald Trump’s mental condition compared to similar searches about Joe Biden.
When users typed “is Trump in cognitive decline”, the tool showed a notice: “An AI Overview is not available for this search”.
However, replacing Trump’s name with Biden’s gave users a written summary from the AI system.

The Verge highlighted this pattern first. In one of their tests, the phrase “does Trump show signs of dementia” triggered the same message about the AI response being unavailable.
However, when The Independent attempted the same search later, the result had changed, and the message was no longer visible.
In Google’s AI Mode, a separate view that combines AI features with regular results, searching for Trump-related mental health questions led to a list of links to news articles. In contrast, searches about Biden in that mode included a summary generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
When asked about the issue, a Google spokesperson said that not every search will produce an AI-written response. They explained:
Our systems automatically determine where an AI response will be useful, and it’s not always 100 percent consistent.
They also noted that, especially for topics involving current events, users may receive a set of links instead of an AI overview.
