Criminals are leveraging counterfeit McAfee pop-ups to gain unauthorized remote access to personal computers to deceive individuals in Pinellas County, Florida. Once control is obtained, the scammer manipulates the victim to transfer funds via a Bitcoin ATM, buys gold bars or withdraws a significant amount of cash amount that was later picked up by a courier. One recent incident has resulted in financial losses of over $530,000. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office warns against sharing sensitive details online or over the phone, urging residents to report suspicious interactions. Pop-up spoofs, especially from trusted brands, are equipped with weapons to misuse individuals. The sheriff stressed his vigilance and said, “We advise citizens not to provide personal or account information on the phone or computer.”
