Ethereum Core developer Federico Carrone said that, among the co-founders of Tornado Cash, which is facing a potential retrial in New York, he will donate $500,000 to Roman Storm’s legal fund.
On Monday’s X-Post, Carlone said his experience in Turkey led to the decision to increase his donation to the Storm from $50,000 to $500,000. The developer reported that he was detained by Turkish authorities for about 24 hours on suspicion of linking to Ethereum Privacy Protocol.
“(a) we need to take a clear stand on what happened,” Carone said.

Storm, the three co-founder and developer of Cryptocurrency Mixing Service Tornado Cash, was charged in 2023 with accusations related to money laundering, a conspiracy to operate unlicensed senders, and a conspiracy to violate US sanctions.
As of Tuesday, he reported raising about $5.4 million for the Legal Defense Fund, which includes donations from the Legal Foundation and the Golem Foundation.
Storm and many of his supporters have repeatedly argued that the writing code is not a crime that supports his criminal defense. However, a New York ju judge was found guilty of the conspiracy to run an unlicensed money sender on August 6, stalled on two other charges, opening the door to a potential retrial.
The Roman Storm is still fundraising after his conviction
The co-founder of Tornado Cash has set a $7 million target for a fund that will help him defend his criminal cases. On Monday, a federal judge approved Storm’s lawyers and US prosecutors who agreed to postpone a procedural deadline that could affect a potential retrial.
As of Tuesday, Storm’s sentencing hearing for a single felony count was not scheduled. He could face up to five years in prison.
