President Trump’s AI and crypto kingpin, David Sachs, defended his administration’s executive order on artificial intelligence, saying the United States risks losing its lead over China unless it adopts a uniform domestic regulatory framework.
Appearing on Fox Business’s “Morning with Maria” this morning, he said that while the United States is ahead in the AI race, China remains highly competitive and American innovators could fall behind if forced to follow the patchwork of conflicting AI rules that are emerging in all 50 states.
“If we had to report to regulators in 50 different states at 50 different times using 50 different definitions, that would be very cumbersome and would slow down innovation and hinder our progress in the AI race,” Sachs stressed.
“So if we want to maintain the lead, as President Trump has declared, we need to have a single national standard, a single standard on AI, so that the hardest states, the toughest states, can’t hold us back,” he said. “We look forward to working with Congress on this matter.”
Sachs said the administration is prepared to resist what it sees as overly restrictive state regulations until national standards are established.
President Trump signed a new executive order on Thursday entitled “Securing a National Policy on Artificial Intelligence” to advance a unified national AI policy while countering state AI laws that alter truthful model output, limit innovation, and impede interstate commerce.
The order faces bipartisan backlash as critics warn it will amplify the threat from AI chatbots, surveillance tools and systemic bias. There is also growing alarm among some conservative voices.
