Cyprus police have warned the public about a surge in SMS scams that are pretending to be crypto exchanges.
Cyprus police have issued warnings about an increase in SMS fraud targeting crypto investors. The scammers are impersonating Binance Crypto Exchange and cite statements from the police’s Cybercrime division.
The scammers are reportedly sending mass text messages about the user’s vinance profile claiming that “an unauthorized login attempt was detected from a foreign country.” The message attempts to process the phone number so that it calls recipients to give up login details and account access, the report says.

Police have confirmed that these messages are fake and are warning people not to deal with or interact with the sender, Cyprus Mail reports. As of the time of reporting, Binance had not issued an official statement on the issue.
In August 2024, Binance said it blocked more than $2.4 billion with potential fraud and fraud between January and July, preventing the loss of more than 1.2 million users. In November 2023, the exchange agreed to pay more than $4.3 billion in fines after pleading guilty to violating the federal money laundering and sanctions laws.
Scammers’ data shows that phishing scams were stolen from more than $10.2 million in code from more than 9,000 casualties in January, down 56% from December. Despite the decline, blockchain forensics companies have reported a surge in telegram “fake safeguard” scams, which have been over 2,000% since November 2024 and have more than 300 fake accounts appearing daily.
