Crypto ATM operators kept the leak quiet for over a year, citing federal procedures and law enforcement investigations.
According to a recent filing with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, the violation was first detected on June 23, 2024, with Bitcoin Depot identifying suspicious activity in its information system. The company deployed an investigation accordingly and involved third party security experts to determine the extent of the violation.
On July 18, 2024, a survey confirmed that hackers had access to documents containing personal data from 26,732 customers. The stolen information included a name, phone number and driver’s license number. In some cases, it also includes the home address, date of birth and email address.
Bitcoin Depot said it cannot previously notify affected users as a federal investigation is underway. The disclosure retention was lifted only on June 13, 2025, when law enforcement confirmed that their investigation had concluded.

The company emphasizes that there is no evidence that previously exposed data has been misused and provides support to affected individuals. It also implemented new security measures to improve system monitoring and raise internal awareness to prevent future incidents.
Users are encouraged to remain vigilant for the next 12-24 months, monitor their financial accounts, review their credit reports, and report any suspicious activity or signs of identity theft immediately.
This violation comes amid a wave of targeted attacks against crypto service providers as threat actors continue to evolve tactics to prey on unsuspecting individuals and groups. This has repeatedly made a similar violation in December 2024 with rival Crypto ATM operator BYTE FEDERAL, releasing personal data from over 58,000 users.
Bitcoin Depot is currently the largest Crypto ATM operator in the United States, with a network of over 8,000 kiosks nationwide.
