Tanzania token
Tanzanian billionaire Mohamed Duge’s social media account was recently hacked by a crypto fraudster who promoted fake digital assets to 2.2 million followers. The con artist used Deepfark to persuade his followers to buy the token and provide instructions on how to do so.
According to a report by Forbes, Dewji discovered the hack on February 5th, quickly distanced himself from the Crypto project. He also reported the incident to social media platform X. Despite this, the scammers continued to post videos promoting the “Tanzanian token.” In one subsequently deleted post, a man who resembles Dewji claimed that his account had not been breached and urged his followers to buy the token.
However, about 24 hours later, after regaining control of the account, Dewji issued a statement apologizing and warning users to be warned against hackers.
“We sincerely apologize for the recent incidents involving fraudulent posts attempting to fraudulent individuals by impersonating Mohammed Duge,” Duge said. “These actions are unacceptable and we firmly denounce them.”
The con man is $1.48 million
Dewji also praised the X team for being able to quickly resolve issues and regain full control of their account. In a statement, the billionaire warned his followers to be wary of fraud and to rely solely on official social media channels for accurate information.
Despite Swift’s response, Forbes’ report cites Lookonchain’s analysis, saying that some investors have fallen victim to fraud and lost $1.48 million. The report also linked the scammers behind the Tanzanian token to hackers who violated the account of former Brazilian president Gea Bolsonaro in January. According to Crypto Scam Tracker ZachxBT, Bolsonaro is a scammer who stole digital assets worth $1.3 million.
