Coinbase (Coin) has confirmed that cybercriminals “buy” a group of fraudulent support agents that have encouraged theft of user data.
Crypto Exchange added in its blog post that it “refunds customers who have been fooled to send funds to attackers.” They also offer a $20 million bug prize to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest.
The cybercriminal check comes three months after On-Chain Thruce ZachxBT claimed Coinbase users lost $300 million to social engineering scams.
Coinbase also said that the offenders have secured government ID images, account balances and corporate data. The two-factor authentication code and private key were not compromised.
The exchange fired staff involved in the violation on the spot and referred them to the US and international law enforcement agencies. We will also be closing in on criminal charges.
Coinbase did not immediately respond to Coindesk’s request for comment regarding Zachxbt’s $300 million claim.
