A recent donation from Coinbase, the largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, to President Trump’s push to build a White House ballroom has sparked concerns from Sen. Chris Murphy, who claims the company’s involvement is part of a “corruption factory.”
Senator says Coinbase donations to White House ballroom are part of Trump’s ‘corruption factory’
fact
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy criticized Coinbase’s involvement in President Donald Trump’s push to build a White House ballroom.
Murphy said on social media that this and previous campaign donations were part of a “corruption factory” to collect rewards for dropping a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit against the exchange in February.
Faryah Shirzad, Coinbase’s chief policy officer, called these allegations ridiculous and explained the legality of all of the actions that Sen. Murphy mentioned, including super PAC donations to the Trump campaign and donations to the inaugural committee.
Regarding the Ballroom donation, Shirzad said Coinbase is “proud” to support this effort, noting that other companies are also contributing to the project.
Nevertheless, Murphy argued that the cryptocurrency industry has made an “extraordinary investment” in Trump that is “unprecedented in American history.”
He emphasized that:
I know it’s your job to claim this isn’t pay-to-play, but if it’s not, then what is? You don’t have to hate your industry to think this all stinks.
Why is it relevant?
The involvement of crypto companies in politics and the Trump administration’s support for the industry has raised concerns from senators and representatives who have warned of conflicts of interest, as the Trump family is also directly involved in crypto projects.
For example, the recent pardon of Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Chao, who President Trump recently said he didn’t know who he was, was labeled by Representative Maxine Waters as “a blatant example of pay-to-play corruption.”
I’m looking forward to it
Although President Trump has control of the Republican field over Congress, this may change in the future and the incoming administration may investigate these events that could undermine the credibility and integrity of the crypto industry.
