Christy Goldsmith Romero, one of the four commissioners of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will leave federal regulators at the end of the month, she announced Friday.
Goldsmith Romero joins fellow commissioner Summer Melsinger. He announced earlier this week that he will retire on May 30 after being appointed as the next CEO of the Blockchain Association, the Washington, DC-based lobbying group for the crypto industry.
In a statement, Goldsmith Romero said during the committee the agency’s overseen derivatives market “experienced significant growth while remaining resilient and financially stable throughout the era of market stress and volatility.”
“I also want to acknowledge the members of the CFTC Technology Advisory Committee, which I sponsored, for their groundbreaking reporting and public forum on future financial issues,” she said. “… Under my sponsorship, TAC has released a Landmarks Report on Responsible AI on Financial Markets and Decentralized Financials, sponsoring a public forum on AI, cybersecurity, blockchain, digital identity and digital assets.”
Coindesk reported earlier this week, and Coindesk is also expected to leave Caroline Femme’s behalf. Fam told people that she would leave after the Senate confirmed that Brian Kintenz, the former chairman of President Donald Trump, whom he chose to lead the agency.
Goldsmith Romero had previously announced his departure from the CFTC, which also linked it to the confirmation of Quintenz. However, the Senate Agriculture Committee has not yet scheduled a confirmation hearing for Quintenz. After that hearing, the committee will need to schedule a vote. Quintenz must be confirmed by a majority of the entire Senate, and then he is sworn in.
With Goldsmith Romero’s departure on May 31, the CFTC will leave the CFTC with two commissioners. That number could remain static after Quintenz’s confirmation until Trump nominated three more commissioners (two Republicans and Democrats) to fill the empty seats.
