Jimmy Su, security director at Binance, said North Korean hackers are the biggest threat facing the cryptocurrency industry, targeting the company with fake recruitment applications every day.
According to Su, attackers use voice change and deepfake technology to hide themselves during job interviews. They also use methods such as open source code (e.g. NPM) and pose as a fake recruiter providing well-paid jobs to carry out attacks.
“Currently, the biggest attack vectors on the crypto industry are the state-backed hackers, especially the North Korea and the Lazarus group. They have been focusing on cryptography for the past two or three years and have been extremely successful,” Su said in a statement. Binance executives noted that in almost every major North Korean seizure cyberattack, unauthorized employees were involved in the attack.
Based in North Korea, the Lazarus Group is known as one of the most active and dangerous hacking groups in the world. According to the FBI, the group is responsible for the March attack on the Bibit exchange, which caused a loss of $1.4 billion and is considered the biggest crypto hack in history.
Su says that Binance receives many fake resumes every day that are thought to be prepared by North Korean attackers, and these are often identified by specific templates. However, once the fake application passes through the early stages, it becomes difficult to verify the reliability of candidates through video interviews.
