The investigation into Javier Mairei has progressed after his involvement in the Libra scandal. Judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado is investigating his assets and whereabouts during the Pump and Dump case.
The judge also explores similar topics about his major political allies, particularly his sister Karina. It is currently unclear whether she will file criminal charges, but this scandal is not ideal for anyone’s political career.
How much did President Milei have to do with Libra?
Since the Libra scandal shook the memecoin market and the political space in Argentina last month, legal consequences have been declining for many perpetrators. The arrest warrant was issued against market maker Hayden Davis, and the private lawsuit is working against private supporters.
Prosecutors are currently investigating President Javier Mairay’s assets to determine his involvement in Libra.
“The Libra incident would illustrate the manipulation of crypto fraud… a form of fraud. This type of investment promotion could undermine the economic and financial systems where the central government is obliged to control and regulate activities to prevent illegal and system capital movements.”
Specifically, Judge Arroyo Salgado looks at several paths to investigate Milei’s connection to Libra. She wants to determine his entire itinerary during the period he publicly promoted the token.
Additionally, she, along with his sister and several other prominent political allies, ordered an investigation into his assets.
The Libra scandal was so large that investigation into Mairay began almost immediately. Several US executives were informed that they could also pursue charges against him, but none of the opportunities rose up.
By looking at his assets and whereabouts, Arroyo Salgado wants to identify conclusive evidence of his involvement.
President Miley quickly denied any direct connections with Libra, but subsequent televised interviews only further undermined his reputation. Recent polls show that most Argentinians have lost faith in the president.
Regardless of the possibility of criminal litigation, these factors can hinder our ability to pass laws or to enact policies.
Ultimately, it is unclear what concrete consequences Milei will face from the Libra blunder. He is the head of state and accusing him of a criminal offence would be a dangerous outlook under any circumstances.
Still, the investigation into him is intensifying. If he engaged in political corruption with Libra supporters, it would leave a clue for Terutale.
