Argentine prosecutors have requested that access to HTX be blocked. This is because users were unable to provide data on pig slaughter probes with funds placed at addresses linked to their wallets. This measure is set to affect thousands of users.
Argentina blocks access to HTX as part of pig slaughter probe
Argentina took a bold step, blocking access to the HTX cryptocurrency exchange at the national level. San Isidro’s cybercrime-specialized prosecutor’s office, headquartered in the Seychelles, ordered a blockage of exchanges, which have Chinese origins, as it refused to cooperate with pig batting scheme probes.
The groundbreaking decision is that the exchange is not registered in the country or provided necessary documents to the national securities regulator to operate as a virtual asset service provider (VASP).
The survey dates back to 2022. It goes back to 2022, when the scheme’s victim lost $13,000 as a third party used him to force him to send these funds to a third party’s address. The address used to receive funds is linked to HTX, and local media said they also received cryptocurrencies from other investment schemes.
Prosecutor Alejandro Musso, who is in charge of the investigation, said the block was enacted after failing to provide identification data linked to this address.
Musso declared:
From a criminal perspective, we understand that it is urgent to identify and block access to all platforms operating within the country without registration and judicial cooperation.
He further emphasized that the measure “not only will it enhance transparency in the crypto ecosystem, but will also provide legal certainty for both investors and victims of criminal offences related to crypto assets.”
Nevertheless, this measure leaves thousands of HTX users without formal means of accessing funds, even though these have not been seized. Previously, HTX had rejected another ID request from the Argentinean judicial system. This argued that the data requested could not be provided due to legal restrictions and similar requests should only be made through the Seychelles organization.
