Node Updates

MimbleWimbleCoin (MWC) v5.3.10

  • Transaction fee limits: safeguards to prevent unexpectedly high fees.
  • New “offline” mode: run in a mode better suited for cold wallet setups (prepare and sign transactions without network access).

We recommend upgrading if you use cold storage or routinely craft transactions for offline signing.

Ergo (ERG) 6.0.1

  • Versioned block transaction serializer since 6.0: ensures the correct serializer version is used going forward.
  • Candidate regeneration fixes: stability improvements while preparing block candidates.
  • Indexed node API additions: endpoint to fetch blocks with full transactions.
  • UTXO queries refined: option to exclude mempool-spent outputs across all “unspent” endpoints.
  • Unconfirmed TX detail: endpoint now returns full inputs with proofs for pending transactions.

This maintenance release focuses on correctness, API completeness, and smoother block candidate handling.

Zcash (ZEC) v6.3.0

Network Upgrade 6.1 (NU6.1) preparations are included in this release.

  • ZIP 271: Deferred Dev Fund Lockbox Disbursement.
  • ZIP 1016 (partial): Community and Coinholder Funding Model.
  • Activation (testnet): NU6.1 activates at height 3,536,500.
  • Regtest control: can be activated at a specific height using -nuparams=4dec4df0:HEIGHT.
  • Testing note: during the test phase, consensus rules may change; if so, testnet will be rolled back in v6.10.0 and re-activated a second time (see ZIP 255 for deployment process).

Bug fix: corrected accounting for unshielding transactions spending Orchard notes in transparent balance-related RPCs (e.g., getbalance, gettransaction), aligning behavior with earlier fixes for Sprout/Sapling.

Default updated: -preferredtxversion now defaults to 5 (NU5 format). Use -preferredtxversion=4 to retain the previous behavior.

Block Reward Reductions

Karlsen (KLS)

Per the Karlsencoin tokenomics and emission schedule, the block reward decreased:

  • Previous: 29.71 KLS
  • New: 28.89 KLS

Please pay attention! 2CryptoCalc has been updated accordingly.

Kaspa (KAS)

As part of the Kaspa emission schedule and Crescendo hard fork process, another planned reduction occurred:

Live in Zashi: Decentralized Off-Ramp for Shielded ZEC https://earlybirdsinvest.com/live-in-zashi-decentralized-off-ramp-for-shielded-zec/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/live-in-zashi-decentralized-off-ramp-for-shielded-zec/#respond Thu, 28 Aug 2025 17:01:15 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/live-in-zashi-decentralized-off-ramp-for-shielded-zec/

We’ve just shipped the first feature in the Zashi–NEAR integration: a private, decentralized off-ramp for shielded ZEC. Starting today, you can swap shielded ZEC to any NEAR-supported cryptocurrency in Zashi.

How It Works

  • Open Zashi and go to More → Swap
  • Enter the amount of shielded ZEC you want to swap.
  • Add the destination wallet address for the cryptocurrency you want to receive.
  • Review the quote and confirm.

That’s it! Because you’re swapping from your shielded address, your address, balances, and transaction history remain fully protected.

Why It Matters

For some of us, centralized exchanges aren’t even an option. For others, it’s about not handing over personal information to entities that act as honeypots for hackers. This feature gives you another path:

  • A convenient, decentralized, private off-ramp when centralized exchanges aren’t possible or desired.
  • Convert only the ZEC you need, while the rest of your balance stays shielded.
  • Extra protection in places where financial privacy is a necessary safeguard, not just a preference.

This isn’t the full swap functionality in Zashi yet. That’s still coming. But it’s a meaningful first step, and it lays the groundwork for what’s next: private cross-chain payments and full swaps in and out of ZEC inside Zashi.

Take Zashi’s new private off-ramp for a spin and let us know what it unlocks for you!

 Shields up.

Shielded ZEC in Brave Wallet https://earlybirdsinvest.com/shielded-zec-in-brave-wallet/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/shielded-zec-in-brave-wallet/#respond Wed, 02 Apr 2025 16:26:57 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/shielded-zec-in-brave-wallet/

We’re proud to share that shielded ZEC is now supported in Brave Wallet—marking a huge milestone not only for Zcash, but for the future of privacy across the web. The integration is part of the ongoing partnership between ECC, Brave, and Filecoin Foundation announced at Mainnet 2023.

This release has been years in the making. It began, like so many good things do, over barbecue in Austin—just a few privacy nerds from ECC and Brave, trading ideas about wallets, browsers, and a shared vision of what privacy could look like in Web3. That casual meal turned into a multi-year, deeply collaborative effort to bring shielded Zcash to millions of Brave users.

What makes this moment so important isn’t just the technology—though building zero-knowledge support into a browser-based wallet for the first time ever is a major technical achievement. It’s the fact that Brave and ECC share a core belief: privacy is a fundamental right. Not a gimmick, not a luxury—something essential to freedom in the digital age.

Now, for the first time, users can store and spend shielded ZEC directly in their browser. This paves the way for true private payments across the web and introduces millions of users to financial privacy in a way that’s accessible and intuitive.

It’s also worth recognizing how it was made possible: not through a one-off grant or transactional integration, but through deep, sustained collaboration between ECC and Brave at every level. Our teams have met every other week since this partnership began—solving challenges, checking in through shared channels, and building trust for the last 3 years. Brave developers leaned on ECC’s core engineering team to understand and integrate our libraries, and ECC engineers worked side by side with them to ensure the implementation goes smoothly.

This kind of partnership is rare. It reflects a long-term commitment—not just to each other and this milestone, but to the broader mission of building tools that protect users, not exploit them. That commitment reaches from engineers to leadership and continues well beyond this important achievement.

Shielded ZEC in Brave is a win for Zcash, a win for Brave, and—most importantly—a win for humanity. This is what it looks like when the right people come together to build the financial tools we actually want.

Ledger Migration Support: Restore & Shield Your ZEC https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ledger-migration-support-restore-shield-your-zec/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ledger-migration-support-restore-shield-your-zec/#respond Fri, 28 Mar 2025 17:56:01 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ledger-migration-support-restore-shield-your-zec/

The latest Zashi update resolves one of the biggest frustrations for Zcash users—stuck funds on Ledger. If you’ve been unable to access your ZEC due to Ledger’s ongoing Zcash integration issues, this update provides a reliable way to recover and shield your funds. It also makes it possible to restore other wallets with transparent address rotation.

Recover Your Funds from Ledger

Some Ledger users have encountered difficulties accessing their ZEC due to various issues including the recent bug in Ledger’s support for some Zcash transactions. The new Zashi update offers two simple and secure ways to recover your funds:

Restore your Ledger seed phrase in a Keystone hardware wallet – This allows you to maintain your funds in a hardware wallet while accessing, shielding, and managing them via Zashi.

  1. Import your Ledger seed phrase into Keystone to access your ZEC through Keystone.
  2. Connect your Keystone device to Zashi using Zashi Integrations.
  3. Shield your transparent ZEC by navigating to “Balances” tab and clicking on “Shield and consolidate funds.”

If you don’t have a Keystone device yet, you can get 5% off with code “Zashi.”

Restore your Ledger seed phrase directly in Zashi – This provides immediate access to your funds for management in your Zashi mobile wallet. However, since this moves funds from a hardware wallet to a software wallet, consider whether this approach aligns with your security preferences.

  1. Import your Ledger seed phrase into Zashi.
  2. Shield your transparent ZEC by navigating to “Balances” tab and clicking on “Shield and consolidate funds.”

Expanded Transparent Wallet Restoration

This update also expands Zashi’s restoration capabilities beyond Ledger. Now, users can restore wallets that use Bitcoin-style transparent address rotation and transparent-only wallets like Trust Wallet.

A Path to Better Transparent Address Rotation

While this update makes it possible to restore wallets that use transparent address rotation, for now Zashi does not offer this feature—and for good reason.

Transparent address rotation is often seen as a privacy feature, but in reality, it can create a false sense of security. We are researching ways to integrate this functionality in a way that aligns with Zcash’s privacy-first principles. In the meantime, users should be aware that transparent address rotation alone does not provide strong privacy guarantees. Read more about it here.

Why This Matters

This update not only rescues stuck ZEC from Ledger but also lays the groundwork for better recovery options and stronger privacy protections in Zashi. Whatever issues you’ve faced with ZEC storage in Ledger, this update provides a clear path to regaining control over your ZEC. Take control of your funds. Download the latest Zashi update:

We Now Support Payout to TEX Addresses

As the cryptocurrency landscape evolves, so do the requirements for transaction transparency and regulatory compliance. Recent developments have led to the introduction of ZCash TEX addresses, particularly in response to increased regulatory scrutiny. Binance and other exchanges have started requiring transactions from transparent addresses, prompting the adoption of TEX addresses that comply exclusively with these types of transactions.

ZCash TEX addresses are designed to only accept funds from Transparent Addresses, not from Shielded Addresses. This means users must first transfer funds from Shielded to Transparent Addresses before sending to a TEX address. The introduction of TEX addresses (defined in ZIP 320) aims to meet exchange requirements without completely sacrificing user privacy. The push for TEX addresses comes from increasing regulatory pressures that demand more transparency in transactions, especially from platforms like Binance that threaten to delist cryptocurrencies that do not comply.

Do ZCash TEX addresses decrease privacy? For users prioritizing privacy and already using Shielded Balances, the impact is minimal. The design of our ZCash Wallet aims to minimize privacy loss and prevent tracking through metadata, although these addresses do increase the potential for node operators to correlate transaction data.

Is ZCash still regulatory compliant with TEX addresses? While TEX addresses meet current regulatory demands without significantly compromising privacy, they represent only the beginning of potential regulatory changes that could further affect privacy. The future of ZCash may need to lean more towards decentralized exchanges and wallets, which our ZCash Wallet will continue to support.

Node Updates

Zcash (ZEC) v5.10.0

The latest Zcash update introduces support for Network Upgrade 6 (NU6) on Testnet, with a planned upgrade needed soon for Mainnet. This release also improves RPC method handling and enhances platform support by dropping outdated operating systems like Debian 10, which no longer meets our security standards. Security patches from recent vulnerabilities disclosed by the Bitcoin Core security team have also been implemented to enhance node safety.

Horizen (ZEN) v5.0.4

This update extends the deprecation height of previous versions, ensuring a smoother transition for users to newer, more secure versions of the node software. It’s critical for all nodes running on Mainnet to update before the set deprecation block height to maintain network integrity and security.

Ergo 5.0.22

Ergo’s update enhances query functionalities for blockchain transactions and fixes duplicates in transaction results, improving the reliability and accuracy of data retrieval within the network.

Pyrin Unsuccessful Update

The Pyrin network aimed to undergo a significant update with version 0.14.2.3, which was designed to enhance network performance by increasing the block speed from 1 block per second to 10 blocks per second. This ambitious update was intended to improve network throughput and scalability, supporting a higher volume of transactions and reducing latency for Pyrin users.

Unfortunately, the update did not proceed as planned. Despite all mining pools updating to the new version, the network faced severe stability issues. The rapid increase in block speed led to multiple chain splits, indicating a lack of consensus among the nodes. This resulted in repeated disagreements on the valid chain, which fragmented the network and caused significant disruptions for users and miners alike.

happy_miner

The Pyrin development team responded by reverting some of the newly created blocks to stabilize the blockchain. They rolled back to the previous stable version of the node software (version 0.14.5), which maintains the block speed at 1 block per second. This action was necessary to restore the operational stability to the Pyrin network.

Currently, the network is operating fine and the mining is going on. Miners should remain alert for announcements regarding new updates that will incorporate lessons learned from this experience.

Karlsen and KASPA Reward Reduction

Karlsen (KLS) Reward Reduction

Following the Karlsencoin Tokenomics, the block reward for Karlsen has been reduced from 41.60 KLS to 40.45 KLS as part of our emission schedule.

KASPA (KAS) Reward Reduction

In line with the KASPA EMISSION SCHEDULE, the block reward has decreased from 97.99 KAS to 92.49 KAS. We urge miners to update their strategies accordingly.

Zashi-Flexa Integration is Here: Spend ZEC at Thousands of Retailers! https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-flexa-integration-is-here-spend-zec-at-thousands-of-retailers/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-flexa-integration-is-here-spend-zec-at-thousands-of-retailers/#respond Sat, 08 Feb 2025 10:47:42 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-flexa-integration-is-here-spend-zec-at-thousands-of-retailers/

To say that we are thrilled about this new release would be an understatement. It. Is. Happening. The Zashi-Flexa integration is here! This powerful update allows Zashi users to seamlessly spend their ZEC at thousands of retail locations that accept Flexa as a payment option.

What Is Flexa and Why Is This Important?

Flexa’s groundbreaking payments network enables secure, fraud-proof cryptocurrency transactions at thousands of merchants in the US, Canada, and El Salvador, with new locations and merchants in the works. Like Zashi, Flexa is deeply committed to user privacy. While Flexa is required to ask for some identifying information in order to bridge the gap between cryptocurrencies and traditional systems, it never collects or stores more than is absolutely required by law, never shares it with third parties, and deletes it as soon as legally allowed. This shared commitment to user privacy makes Flexa the perfect partner for Zashi, aligning with our own principles where we strive to know close to nothing about Zashi users and their wallet activity and protect them from any metadata leakage at every turn.

This integration marks a significant milestone for Zcash, bridging the gap between digital currency and real-world usability. It empowers ZEC holders to not only store and spend their shielded ZEC but also spend it easily in their daily lives. With this integration, Zashi users can now use their ZEC to pay for everyday purchases, from coffee and groceries to clothes and kitchen appliances—all while minimizing the risks to their privacy and security associated with traditional forms of payment.

How It Works:

Follow these steps to make your first purchase with Flexa:

  1. Make sure there’s ZEC in your Zashi wallet. In the U.S., if you’re new to Zcash and prefer not to register with a crypto exchange, you can use Zashi’s Coinbase integration to purchase ZEC directly within Zashi using your debit card. All you need is a U.S. debit card, a U.S. phone number, and just a few minutes.
  2. Inside Zashi, click the hamburger icon to navigate to Settings, and then choose Integrations.
  3. Open Flexa and go through a quick registration process.
  4. Choose the merchant you want to pay.
  5. Generate a payment code in the app and scan it at checkout. (Note: sometimes the QR code must be scanned by the cashier as a gift card.)
  6. Your shielded ZEC will be instantly sent and processed through Flexa’s payment network.
  7. The merchant receives your payment in their chosen currency. All they know is that the payment is complete—they won’t know anything about you, not even the currency you used.

It’s that easy! Fast, smooth, private transactions using the most reliable privacy coin out there. Magic.

Why We’re Excited:

Zashi’s mission is to make Zcash as usable as possible while maintaining the privacy and security that Zcash is famous for. With this Flexa integration, we’re unlocking an entirely new use case for ZEC, turning it into a true form of digital cash that can be spent wherever Flexa is accepted. “For the first time in history, instant payments with shielded ZEC are available at thousands of retail locations,” said ECC’s CEO Josh Swihart. “This is an epic, long-awaited milestone for Zcash. Zashi empowers users to make private, secure payments effortlessly through Flexa, bringing us closer to a world where true financial privacy is standard.”

Get Started Today:

Make sure your Zashi wallet is updated to the latest version to start paying with Flexa.

The app is available on App Store and Google Play.

Try it out at one of the many Flexa locations and let us know what you think. We genuinely can’t wait to see how you use this new feature in your daily lives! In the absence of user analytics to protect your data, we rely on your feedback in improving Zashi and shaping the future Zcash. And if you love it, help us show it off. So, share your experiences and don’t forget to tag us!

Here’s to making Zcash more accessible and usable for everyone, everywhere! Here’s to Zashi-Flexa!

 Happy transacting.

Drumroll Please: Introducing Zashi-Keystone Hardware Wallet Integration for Shielded ZEC https://earlybirdsinvest.com/drumroll-please-introducing-zashi-keystone-hardware-wallet-integration-for-shielded-zec/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/drumroll-please-introducing-zashi-keystone-hardware-wallet-integration-for-shielded-zec/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2025 03:47:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/drumroll-please-introducing-zashi-keystone-hardware-wallet-integration-for-shielded-zec/

We are so proud to announce the launch of the Zashi-Keystone integration, a major breakthrough for the Zcash community that has been years in the making. This integration marks a significant evolution in Zcash usability by enabling cold storage of shielded ZEC.

The Wait

“It’s been a long and challenging road,” says our CEO Josh Swihart. “Due to the computation needed to create zero-knowledge proofs, we had to overcome a number of technical hurdles in order to support shielded ZEC on a hardware wallet. This is cryptography, hardware, and software all coming together with a beautiful user experience for the first time.”

A robust front end capable of handling the complexities of shielded ZEC transactions was critical to integrating with a hardware wallet like Keystone. “Zashi wasn’t just another wallet; it became the necessary front-end that made the Keystone integration feasible. This wouldn’t be possible without ECC’s core team’s deep knowledge of the Zcash protocol.”

Working Together

The Zcash community has faced setbacks with other hardware wallet platforms when development promises weren’t met, which resulted in stalled funds and frustration. Keystone emerged as a collaborative partner willing to push boundaries and innovate alongside us. Their exceptional commitment and capabilities didn’t go unnoticed. The community embraced Keystone, and they received a ZCG grant to fuel their work.

The non-stop exchange of ideas and solutions between the ECC and Keystone teams is notable. Keystone’s proactive approach and dedication to addressing complex technical issues made it a seamless collaboration. “Keystone proved to be an invaluable partner in developing the Zashi integration, displaying remarkable agility and commitment to innovation,” says Josh. “Their collaborative spirit and technical capability allowed us to overcome significant challenges, turning ambitious concepts into practical solutions for storing shielded ZEC.”

How to Use Zashi-Keystone

Connecting Keystone hardware wallet to Zashi:

Signing outgoing Zashi transactions with Keystone:

Best Practices

We do not recommend importing an old seed phrase into Keystone. Instead, create a new Keystone wallet and simply send your funds to the new Keystone address. Sharing a seed phrase between wallets reduces the security of your funds. It can also result in long scanning times and funds appearing to be unavailable.

Order Your Keystone

In celebration of this milestone, Keystone is offering a 5% discount to our community. Use the promo code “Zashi” when ordering your Keystone wallet.

Looking Forward

With the successful launch of the Zashi-Keystone integration, we continue to pave the way for future advancements in Zcash technology and usability. Our commitment remains strong to providing our community with the tools they need to securely manage their assets while upholding the privacy and security standards Zashi is known for.

Happy transacting.
