We’ve just shipped the first feature in the Zashi–NEAR integration: a private, decentralized off-ramp for shielded ZEC. Starting today, you can swap shielded ZEC to any NEAR-supported cryptocurrency in Zashi.

How It Works

  • Open Zashi and go to More Swap
  • Enter the amount of shielded ZEC you want to swap.
  • Add the destination wallet address for the cryptocurrency you want to receive.
  • Review the quote and confirm.

That’s it! Because you’re swapping from your shielded address, your address, balances, and transaction history remain fully protected.

Why It Matters

For some of us, centralized exchanges aren’t even an option. For others, it’s about not handing over personal information to entities that act as honeypots for hackers. This feature gives you another path:

  • A convenient, decentralized, private off-ramp when centralized exchanges aren’t possible or desired.
  • Convert only the ZEC you need, while the rest of your balance stays shielded.
  • Extra protection in places where financial privacy is a necessary safeguard, not just a preference.

This isn’t the full swap functionality in Zashi yet. That’s still coming. But it’s a meaningful first step, and it lays the groundwork for what’s next: private cross-chain payments and full swaps in and out of ZEC inside Zashi.

Take Zashi’s new private off-ramp for a spin and let us know what it unlocks for you!

 Shields up.

Zashi 2.1: Enhanced Privacy with Tor (Beta) https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-2-1-enhanced-privacy-with-tor-beta/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-2-1-enhanced-privacy-with-tor-beta/#respond Thu, 07 Aug 2025 15:02:01 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-2-1-enhanced-privacy-with-tor-beta/

Zashi just expanded its Tor network integration, and it’s yet another quiet game-changer for the privacy-conscious Zcash users. Previously, Tor support in Zashi was limited to fetching ZEC-USD exchange rates, which shielded user IP addresses from exchange servers and prevented metadata leakage. With this update, the wallet’s built-in Tor client can now be used to:

  • Submit ZEC transactions
  • Fetch transaction data
  • Connect to third-party APIs (e.g. NEAR and Maya coming soon)
  • Fetch ZEC-USD exchange rates

Zcash is already the industry leader in private transactions. Zashi’s expanded Tor capabilities place it one more step ahead of the pack. By routing wallet activity through Tor, Zashi adds network-level privacy on top of Zcash’s best-in-class cryptographic protections.

What is Tor?

Tor is a volunteer-operated privacy network that encrypts and routes your internet traffic through multiple relays, making it much harder to trace your online activity back to you.

Zashi’s Tor integration is built on Arti, a Rust-based Tor implementation designed to make Tor faster, more reliable, and easier to integrate into applications like Zashi. Developed by the Tor Project with funding from Zcash Community Grants, Arti has been a long-standing strategic priority for the Zcash community.

Why This Matters

Wallets use Zcash lightwallet servers to fetch data from the chain and to submit transactions to the network. Without Tor, such requests can be linked to your IP address, potentially revealing patterns of wallet usage. Routing these queries through Tor breaks that link, reducing metadata leakage and strengthening privacy for shielded ZEC usage. We also intend to use Tor where possible for future integrations.

Watch ECC’s Jack Grigg, one of the original developers of the Zcash protocol, explain the significance of the Tor feature.

Notes

  • Beta Feature: Tor protection is a beta feature and may affect wallet performance, which is why we’ll be monitoring all user feedback very closely.
  • Controls: This feature can be managed in Zashi’s Advanced Settings. If performance issues are detected, Zashi will prompt you to disable Tor.
  • Regional Restrictions: Tor is blocked in some countries. Make sure its use is permitted in your region. If it is, we strongly recommend enabling it for the extra layer of protection for your private payments.

Protecting your wallet activity is not just about individual transactions; it’s about personal autonomy, privacy rights, financial sovereignty, and much broader societal implications. While the term “privacy” is being watered down and co-opted by corporations built on harvesting user data, our goal is different: true privacy. For us, it’s not a buzzword or a marketing gimmick; it’s a principle that drives every decision, down to the smallest technical detail. The latest Zashi update embodies that principle.

Shields up.

They Grow Up So Fast: Zashi 2.0 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/they-grow-up-so-fast-zashi-2-0/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/they-grow-up-so-fast-zashi-2-0/#respond Mon, 28 Apr 2025 15:26:45 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/they-grow-up-so-fast-zashi-2-0/

Zashi is turning one today—and we’re celebrating with something big.

Zashi 2.0 is a complete redesign of the app, built around everything we’ve learned from you over the past year.

Wallet Status Widget: Real-Time Guidance

While Zashi 2.0 is packed with UI & UX upgrades, the star of the show is the brand-new wallet status widget, designed to keep you informed and in control—without overcomplicating things.

The goal is simple: to guide you through your wallet step-by-step, so you always know what’s happening—and what action to take next. Whether you’re shielding funds, backing up your wallet, or syncing, Zashi now clearly shows you where you are—and the best course of action moving forward.

The status widget gives you helpful nudges right when you need them, and you can tap any status banner to get more details at any time.

What the Status Widget Helps With:

  • Shielding Reminders: Zashi doesn’t let users spend transparent ZEC, because it would jeopardize your privacy. When you receive transparent coins, Zashi requires you to shield it before you can spend it. The wallet status widget makes it super easy. It will:
    • Remind you when you have transparent funds that need shielding.
    • Provide a shortcut to shield your ZEC instantly
  • Restoring & Syncing Progress: See exactly where you are in the restore or sync process—no more staring at the screen wondering when the funds will become available.

  • Other Smart Prompts: Get helpful reminders to back up your wallet, opt into features like currency conversion, and more.

Zashi 2.0 isn’t just easier to use—it’s designed to guide you through every step.

A Smoother Wallet Restore Experience

We’ve made major improvements to Zashi’s wallet restore process. It’s now simpler and a lot less stressful.

Aside from a cleaner look, this update removes a lot of the confusion around wallet birthday height—a block height number that helps shorten restores by limiting how many blocks need to be scanned. Now, Zashi will:

  • Help you estimate your wallet’s birthday height based on the approximate date of your first transaction.
  • Give you tips on what to do to make sure the restore process proceeds without unintended interruptions.

Even More Improvements Across the App

Beyond the big features, Zashi 2.0 includes a bunch of other upgrades designed to make every part of your experience smoother and more intuitive:

  • New Navigation Layout: We rebuilt Zashi’s navigation to make key actions like Send, Receive, and Scan faster and easier to find. Integrations like Coinbase, Flexa, and Keystone are now just two taps away under the “More” button.
  • Simplified Wallet Creation: Creating a new wallet shouldn’t feel like a chore, so we made it faster and cleaner. No need to worry about backing up your seed phrase before your first transaction.
  • Better Wallet Backup Flow: We improved the backup experience to better guide you through this important step—and to make sure you understand the risks involved.
  • Smarter Balance Displays: We’ve updated the UI for displaying your spendable ZEC balance.
  • Quick Explainer Elements: Tap on different parts of the new UI to see quick pop-up explainers that won’t clutter your screen.

Why It Matters

Informed action is key to privacy, which is why we believe usability is a security feature. That’s what Zashi 2.0 is all about. It reflects our commitment to building the best possible experience for private transactions, without friction or confusion. When privacy feels simple and natural, more people choose it.

That’s how we move forward.

Download Zashi 2.0 and let us know what you think—your feedback is what got us this far!

Happy transacting.

Zashi on GitHub & F-Droid: More Ways to Download https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-on-github-f-droid-more-ways-to-download/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-on-github-f-droid-more-ways-to-download/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2025 04:20:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zashi-on-github-f-droid-more-ways-to-download/

Android users will be able to bypass Google by downloading Zashi from F-Droid or GitHub! Zcash offers financial privacy and sovereignty, and we want to ensure that Zashi upholds those values, giving users greater control over how and where they access the app.

  • Zashi for Android is available on GitHub.
  • Zashi for Android has been submitted to F-Droid and is pending approval.

Why F-Droid?

F-Droid is an independent app store that prioritizes open-source, privacy-respecting software. Unlike traditional app stores, it does not track or profile users, and it allows for completely anonymous downloads. By releasing Zashi on F-Droid, we are giving Zcashers more control over their digital footprint, ensuring they can use their wallet without unnecessary data collection, and without being subject to centralized app store control.

  • Privacy First – No tracking and no unnecessary data collection.
  • Transparent & Open-Source – F-Droid only allows fully open-source apps, ensuring community oversight.
  • Alternative App Distribution – Android users can install and update Zashi without depending on a centralized app store.

The F-Droid build for Zashi is completely reproducible. We encourage the community to build it and verify our work. This helps identify and mitigate potential threats to our infrastructure and processes, including those we depend on.

F-Droid Release Caveats

Because F-Droid requires that all apps be 100% open-source, the F-Droid version of Zashi does not include Coinbase and Flexa integrations at this time. Although the source for these integrations is available, they depend on API keys that can’t be published, and had to be excluded from this release.

The F-Droid and Google Play Store releases are separate apps and do not share wallet data. You can install and run both at the same time with different seed phrases. If you need to move a wallet from one app to the other, first back up the seed phrase, then restore it in the other app.

Want All Features? Download Zashi from GitHub.

For Android users who want to bypass Google, but want full functionality or simply don’t want to wait for the app to become available on F-Droid, a binary release of Zashi for Android is available on GitHub today.

This is the same release that we publish to the Google Play Store. It includes all of Zashi’s latest features and integrations and is perfect for users who want to opt out of Google but still want the full Zashi experience. To install it you will need to know how to side-load apk files, for which tutorials are available.

Why no GitHub version for iOS?

Although Apple is now required to allow side-loading of iOS apps for users in the European Union, this comes with significant restrictions—including a minimum of 1 million downloads in the past calendar year for web distribution. While it is technically possible to build versions of Zashi for iOS similar to what we’ve delivered for Android, Apple’s terms still impose limitations on distribution and installs. We are investigating whether Zashi for iOS can be distributed through alternative app marketplaces.

Choose How You Zashi

With these new download options, Zashi will be accessible to Zcashers that want to use the app on their own terms:

Your wallet. Your choice.

Coinbase Onramp headlines Zashi 1.2 release https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-onramp-headlines-zashi-1-2-release/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-onramp-headlines-zashi-1-2-release/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2025 02:12:55 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-onramp-headlines-zashi-1-2-release/

ECC is excited to announce the new Zashi-Coinbase integration, offering Zashi users a faster, simpler way to buy and self-custody ZEC. This new onramp reflects our commitment to building a user-friendly interface for Zcash, where privacy and security meet convenience. Here’s how this new feature benefits Zcashers:

Buy or transfer with Coinbase

Top up your ZEC: Coinbase is widely recognized as one of the most trusted and popular exchanges, used by many Zcashers. If you already have a Coinbase account, you can now enjoy the convenience of topping up your Zashi ZEC balance right from the wallet. The “Buy or transfer with Coinbase” feature allows you to log into your Coinbase account and complete the purchase or transfer in minutes, all without leaving the Zashi app.

Buy with debit card (United States only)

Skip the registration: For Zashi users in the U.S. without a Coinbase account, the “Buy with debit card” option introduces an unprecedented level of accessibility, enabling users to purchase up to $500 of ZEC per week with just a U.S. phone number and a debit card. This feature eliminates the need for creating a Coinbase account (or any exchange account) to acquire ZEC.

Onboard Zcash newbies: Perhaps the most transformative is the integration’s impact on individuals new to Zcash or new to cryptocurrencies in general. This new feature bypasses the complexities that often discourage the crypto-curious, making it easier to onboard friends to Zcash. With the Coinbase Onramp, new users can own ZEC in minutes, without being overwhelmed by the long process of creating an account on an exchange, going through KYC, connecting a payment method, waiting for the funds to become available, and then transferring ZEC to their wallet.

Self-custody ZEC in minutes

Best of all, both buying options offered by Zashi’s Coinbase Onramp seamlessly facilitate self-custody of ZEC, which is crucial to realizing the full potential of Zcash. In addition to that, ZEC stored in Zashi must be shielded in order to be spent. This ensures the highest level of privacy for every outgoing transaction. Zashi users can shield the transparent ZEC they receive from Coinbase with a click of a button inside the wallet. Just go to your Balances screen and tap the Shield and Consolidate Funds button.

For now, the Coinbase feature lives in the Advanced Settings, but will soon find a new home along with other Zashi integrations. Stay tuned.

Also in Zashi 1.2: Server selection upgrade

We wanted to improve the user experience of selecting the server that has the best performance. So, we’ve implemented a server ping test, which is triggered when you navigate to the Choose a Server screen in the Advanced Settings. One or more top performing servers will be displayed at the top of the list.

We are constantly working to add new features to Zashi and expand the utility of ZEC. Keep an eye out for more updates and features that will make using your favorite private digital asset easier than ever!

User-Requested UX Updates to Zashi, Release 1.2.1 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/user-requested-ux-updates-to-zashi-release-1-2-1/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/user-requested-ux-updates-to-zashi-release-1-2-1/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2025 00:06:47 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/user-requested-ux-updates-to-zashi-release-1-2-1/

We’ve just released a fresh update to the Zashi Wallet app, rolling out some highly requested features and design improvements that aim to make your ZEC transactions a smoother and more enjoyable experience with Zashi. We’re constantly collecting your feedback and, with this update, we want to show you that we hear you and evolve alongside your needs.

What’s New in Zashi?

  • Address Book: Tired of having to copy-paste the same address over and over again for recurring transactions? Our new Address Book feature lets you save and pull up addresses directly from the “Send to” field of the Send tab. You can also access and manage your contacts securely via the Settings menu, with necessary authentication to ensure your information stays protected.

  • Request ZEC Feature: Need to request a payment? It’s now as simple as generating a QR code! This new feature in the Receive tab allows you to create and share payment requests quickly and securely—perfect for splitting bills or receiving payments for your services. Note that if you are scanning a QR code, we recommend using Zashi’s scanner for maximum security.

  • Redesigned Send Tab: We’ve given the Send tab a modern makeover to align with our new design system. We’ve also included a minor UX improvement many of you have requested: the message field now collapses when you enter a transparent address since memos can only accompany shielded transactions. Plus, check out our refreshed Scan UI—it’s sleeker and more user-friendly.
  • Enhanced Transaction History: Your home screen transaction history got some love  as well. Each entry is now expandable and collapsible with a simple tap, which makes it easier to review the details of your transactions.
  • Other UI/UX Enhancements: we’ve implemented several smaller design tweaks and fixes throughout the app. Hope you enjoy them!

We’re already working on more UX and design improvements that will make Zashi even more fun to use. Your feedback is crucial to our process, so please keep sharing your thoughts, ideas, and experiences with us!

Happy transacting.

New in Zashi: Hola (and more) https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-in-zashi-hola-and-more/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-in-zashi-hola-and-more/#respond Sun, 09 Feb 2025 17:15:45 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-in-zashi-hola-and-more/

This week, our latest Zashi update includes a host of usability and security enhancements, along with some crucial bug fixes. But one feature we are particularly excited about is the introduction of Spanish localization.

Zashi Speaks Spanish Now

The passion and dedication of the Latin American community have been a cornerstone of support for Zcash. To recognize the importance of our Spanish-speaking users, we have localized the Zashi app into Spanish. This update is for you—our friends who have shown immense loyalty and enthusiasm for Zcash. A big shoutout to all of you! Your energy and commitment have tremendously enriched our ecosystem, and we look forward to deepening our collaboration with you.

Translating Zashi into Spanish marks our first step towards optimizing Zcash UX for LATAM users. We will continue to explore ways to bring seamless ZEC payments to this vital region.

Usability and Security Updates

Alongside Spanish localization, this update brings several other important changes aimed at improving both usability and security:

Back-to-Back Payments

Prior to this update, users sometimes had to wait before making successive transactions. Now, we’ve implemented advanced note management to allow for consecutive outgoing transactions, significantly reducing spend latency. This will be particularly beneficial for users planning to make frequent ZEC payments via integrations that support spending ZEC.

Address Book Encryption

To address the security issue discovered in iOS last week, we’ve encrypted Zashi’s address book. This ensures that even if your data is backed up to iCloud, your contacts’ information remains protected and inaccessible to anyone but you.

Other Updates and Bug Fixes

  • Improved Send Feedback flow, located in the Settings menu
  • Faster UX for shielding transparent funds
  • App launch protection by device authentication method
  • Redesigned Settings flows and technical alert screens
  • Visual confirmation for successful outgoing transactions
  • Improved logic for shield icon in the transaction history

Stay tuned for moar. Long-awaited updates are just around the corner.

Happy transacting.
