We’ve been hard at work getting to know so many amazing people and projects, and are extremely excited to announce the recipients of the Wave III of the Ethereum Foundation Grants Program!

We kicked off 2018 with a blog post to galvanize scalability research for first and second-layer solutions. Since then, we’ve committed over $11M to 52 projects dedicated to advancing the Ethereum ecosystem. Grants have funded multiple plasma and state channel implementations, diverse client research, enhanced developer frameworks, security audits, and so much more (find them all in the previous posts: Wave I & Wave II)!

A Look into the Selection Process

Since the Grants Program has picked up, we’ve received feedback requesting greater transparency into our processes and a deeper look into the various types of projects considered. Here’s a funding snapshot and grant process update:

Funding Snapshot

The EF Grant Program provided more than $11M in support to 52 projects since early 2018 (Waves I, II, and III).

Grants Charts

Our funding allocation remains true to the program’s original purpose, awarding nearly 7Mtoscalabilityprojects.Afterthis,securityhasbeengrantedalmost7M to scalability projects. After this, security has been granted almost 2M, #buidl projects (projects that improve user experience) received 1.6M,andDevExprojects(projectsthatimprovedeveloperexperience)received1.6M, and DevEx projects (projects that improve developer experience) received 744K. While dollar allocation remains heavily focused on scalability, the number of projects funded are more evenly distributed between categories.

Grants Process Update

The EF Grants program is constantly evolving. With this round, we’ve refined our internal processes to ensure timely fund disbursement. We understand how quickly the space moves and believe in the importance of expedient fund dispersal to the front line. Eventually, we aim to award grants on a rolling basis in order to provide more immediate support to the projects and teams leading the charge for decentralization and transparency.

Ideal applicants come with strong technical knowledge, project roadmap, and show a commitment to fostering collaboration within the ecosystem. For more information about applicant expectations and process workflow, please see our Applicant Expectations and FAQs.

Wave III

With each round, the grants program evolves. Our goal is to effectively grease the wheels for projects building the critical infrastructure of our young community. There are many tracks to lay down before Ethereum “makes it” and it’s been incredible to see all the projects working to lay down these tracks.

The applicant pool for Wave III offered a record number of strong teams and innovative ideas. It’s fascinating and humbling to see the diversity of projects from around the world with a shared interest in fostering the development of Ethereum. These are folks spending their free time reading ethresear.ch, developing new libraries and wallet designs, and engaging in communities discussing the latest in DApp usability and security…and we love them for that.

Without further ado…

Bitwise says Solana next to hit fresh highs as institutional adoption wave matures https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitwise-says-solana-next-to-hit-fresh-highs-as-institutional-adoption-wave-matures/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitwise-says-solana-next-to-hit-fresh-highs-as-institutional-adoption-wave-matures/#respond Sat, 30 Aug 2025 11:12:05 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitwise-says-solana-next-to-hit-fresh-highs-as-institutional-adoption-wave-matures/

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan said Solana could soon set new all-time highs, mirroring Bitcoin and Ethereumโ€™s record runs earlier this year.

Hougan argued that SOL is set to benefit from the same forces that propelled BTC and ETH to new highs this cycle, namely exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows, large capital firms entering the market, and simple, compelling narratives that resonate with investors.

He wrote in a social media post:

โ€œThe formula is simple: ETF fund flows + fund companies + a simple story = all-time highs. It applies to Bitcoin, it applies to Ethereum, it applies to Solana.โ€

Path to institutional adoption

Solana, a blockchain known for its high-speed processing and low transaction costs, has seen increasing developer activity across payments, gaming, and consumer-facing applications.

The networkโ€™s efficiency has helped position it as a potential alternative to Ethereum for decentralized applications, fueling speculation about the eventual approval of a spot Solana ETF in the US.

So far, Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have funneled billions of dollars into the market, with Bitcoin funds alone surpassing gold ETFs in daily volumes this summer.

Given its growing market capitalization and expanding ecosystem, many view Solana as the next logical step for institutional product offerings.

Houganโ€™s comments add weight to that view, suggesting that once fund vehicles are established, Solana could follow the same trajectory as its larger peers.

Outlook evolving

Bitwise has taken a long-term bullish stance on Solana, projecting in a detailed January report that the token could reach between $2,300 and $6,600 by 2030, depending on adoption scenarios.ย The firm based its estimates on Metcalfeโ€™s Law, linking network growth to valuation.

To support investor access, Bitwise also launched a Solana Staking ETP in Europe, offering exposure to SOL with integrated staking rewards and signaling confidence in the blockchainโ€™s scalability and growing ecosystem. It is also looking to launch a spot Solana ETF in the US, but the SEC has so far delayed its decision on the applications.

While the firm remains optimistic about Solanaโ€™s long-term role alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum, it has been more cautious on near-term price outlooks until now. Bitwise previously said it was unsure if SOL would reach new highs this year and called Bitcoin the โ€œbest horse in the race.โ€

This mix of ambitious long-range forecasts and tempered short-term expectations reflects Bitwiseโ€™s view of Solana as a high-potential but still maturing asset.

On Wave 1 and Devcon Ticketing https://earlybirdsinvest.com/on-wave-1-and-devcon-ticketing/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/on-wave-1-and-devcon-ticketing/#respond Thu, 28 Aug 2025 08:21:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/on-wave-1-and-devcon-ticketing/

By now, we hope you’ve heard the news: In just two days, on July 17, 2019, the first wave of general Devcon tickets will go online at 6:00am PT / 9:00am ET / 3:00pm CEST / 10:00pm JST.

Today, we wanted to bring everyone a few details on the ticketing process in advance of Wednesday’s launch.

As always, we’re working to ensure everyone has a fair chance to attend Devcon, so ticket purchases are limited to 2 per order, and passes cannot be bulk-reserved. Further, we’ve maintained our limit of 20 tickets per organization to help as many teams as possible join us in Osaka.

Waves have been a bit of a rush in the past, but we’ve made changes to work toward a smoother process. We’re working through scholarship, builder, speaker, sponsor, and student applications early so that only those that need to purchase general admission tickets will participate in the public waves. Further, there will be more ticketing waves to come following this week’s release.

We’re also really excited to have made the move to an open source ticketing platform this year. We’ve had to put in some work to get it ready for the volume of tickets we sell and the particularities of Devcon, but we think it has really paid off. Not only is it more in line with our values to use this libre platform along with community-developed plugins, but we’ve also been able to add some fun customizations including a BYOB (bring your own badge) option and the ability to opt-in to swag. Swag opt-in will both guarantee you’ll the get the items you’re most excited about, and allow us to cut down on waste by not overproducing.

Finally, we wanted to re-share and updated bit of relevant information from last year’s blog on how our decisions are made to help create a welcoming and transparent process.

Ticket Distribution and Revenue Allocation

First up: More than two thirds of Devcon tickets are (still) either discounted or free, and geared toward builders and students among other groups. The remaining tickets are sold through a series of “waves” at about the same rate per ticket as the previous three Devcon events (a few โ‚ฌ cheaper this year) — this covers the cost of the conference and any profits go towards operations at the Ethereum Foundation. This in turn lets us use our financial resources to give back to the community through funding core development and providing ecosystem grants. Additionally, scholarships and sponsorships from community leaders enable us to bring participants to Osaka who would otherwise be unable to attend, and to release the majority of tickets at discounted prices.

Waves

Waves are the way for anyone to purchase a general admission ticket. We are spacing out the timing of the waves so that we can apply the lessons we learn into future waves (i.e. fixing bugs, addressing up-time issues).

Coming Soon!

Soon after the completion of this week’s wave, stay tuned for more from us about the next ticket releases, as well as the first news on speakers and the timing of the final window for talk submissions.

Finally, we’re always open to your ideas and feedback to make this process better.

To stay tuned for future Devcon updates, follow Deva the Devcon Unicorn (@EFDevcon) or keep posted to the Ethereum Foundation Blog here.

Devcon updates: Announcing Wave 2, a New Application window, and more! https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devcon-updates-announcing-wave-2-a-new-application-window-and-more/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devcon-updates-announcing-wave-2-a-new-application-window-and-more/#respond Wed, 27 Aug 2025 19:11:03 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devcon-updates-announcing-wave-2-a-new-application-window-and-more/

ๅ„ไฝ,

With well under three months to go until Devcon, we are moving at full speed toward Osaka!

You’ll hear about first programming details and more in the coming days, and with ticket sales now underway, we thought it time for a more formal update!

First, Wave 2 of ticket sales are tentatively scheduled to take place on August 6th. We’ve learned and patched a lot following the last round. We used a new, open source ticketing platform this year, and while the platform itself performed admirably, we didn’t get everything right on our configurations for the first production run. With a larger allotment online and a refined checkout process, we hope that everyone experiences a smooth purchasing process in Wave 2.

A change was also made this year to limit tickets to two per order rather than one, so while we do expect Devcon to sell out, those that are online in time can reserve space for coworkers, friends or family.

Next, if you came up with a brilliant idea for a Devcon talk the day after submissions closed, you’re in luck.

Applications have reopened today, and they will be available at Devcon.org for one week, July 29 – August 4. This applies to Builders, and Speakers of any kind (Breakout, Workshop, or Presenter), and Students. Scholarship applications have fully closed.

For speakers, this second window was planned with you in mind. We’re aware of the speed at which things can develop in the Ethereum ecosystem, and we didn’t want to miss out on any recent discoveries!

Finally, all Devcon apps are being reviewed on a rolling basis. The application process is designed to be fair and thorough. Each application is reviewed by at least two people, before a final decision is made by the core Devcon planning team. We think it’s really important to have a system in place that ensures that there is no single reviewer who decides the fate of an application – and that takes time.

While not all applicants will be notified at once, everyone will receive a decision by mid-August — including those applying in the late application window (29 July – 4 August) — to ensure that everyone has received notice prior to the final ticketing wave (in case participation in the wave is needed to attend Devcon). So if you have already submitted a talk proposal, there’s no need to do anything more.

Tl;dr: Wave 2 is tentatively scheduled to take place on August 6th. Speaker, builder and student application pages are up on devcon.org from July 29 to August 4. After that, they’re gone and they won’t come back!

Each day brings us a bit closer to Osaka, and we can’t wait to have so many in the Ethereum family together again. We wish you the best of luck with all applications and ticketing, and hope to see you there.

Devcon Tickets: Wave 3 and beyond https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devcon-tickets-wave-3-and-beyond/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devcon-tickets-wave-3-and-beyond/#respond Wed, 27 Aug 2025 06:02:42 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devcon-tickets-wave-3-and-beyond/

ๅ„ไฝ,

We are now fewer than 60 days away from Devcon, and we wanted to provide important updates and further details about how to obtain remaining Devcon tickets for everyone looking to join us in Osaka.

First, save the date: Wave 3 of Devcon ticket sales will take place on Thursday, the 15th of August at 6:00am PT / 9:00am ET / 3:00pm CEST / 10:00pm JST at Devcon.org!

Following the completion of this wave, there will be a few other methods available for claiming passes.

Addressing ticket demand, it is important to note (as mentioned previously) that more than two thirds of Devcon tickets are either discounted or free, and geared toward builders and students among other groups. The remaining tickets are sold through a series of publicly available “waves”, which have gone quickly.

That said, we also believe that there is more that we can do to give the general public a chance to attend, so following Wave 3 there will be a few other ways to secure your ticket to Devcon, some of which are experimental and utilize the Ethereum network.

Specifically, we will provide opportunities to purchase Devcon tickets outside of a wave by allotting remaining tickets in three different ways: Through an on-chain raffle, an on-chain auction to benefit an expanded scholarship program, and a final appeals round. More information on each of these ticketing processes will be detailed following Wave 3 sales.

Good luck to all who are participating in Wave 3 this week, and we look forward to seeing everyone in Osaka!

Solanaโ€™s Institutional Wave Builds: Pantera Eyes $1.25 Billion Treasury https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solanas-institutional-wave-builds-pantera-eyes-1-25-billion-treasury/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solanas-institutional-wave-builds-pantera-eyes-1-25-billion-treasury/#respond Wed, 27 Aug 2025 01:07:39 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solanas-institutional-wave-builds-pantera-eyes-1-25-billion-treasury/

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Pantera Capital is seeking to raise $1.25 billion for a Solana treasury, adding to the wave of institutional momentum building behind the asset.

Pantera Plans To Convert A Nasdaq-Listed Firm Into A Solana Treasury Vehicle

As first reported by The Information, Pantera Capital is planning to raise funds to create a Solana treasury vehicle. Initially, the firm intends to raise around $500 million from investors. It will then put these funds into a Nasdaq-listed company, which will use them to buy SOL and convert into a treasury vehicle called โ€œSolana Co.โ€

Pantera Capital is an American venture capital and hedge fund specializing in digital assets and blockchain technology. The firm became the first to launch a cryptocurrency fund in the US back in 2013 and today, it manages over $4.8 billion in assets.

In a letter earlier in the month, Pantera disclosed it has invested over $300 million in digital asset treasury (DAT) companies. The firm said its investment thesis was based on a simple premise: โ€œDATs can generate yield to grow net asset value per share, resulting in more underlying token ownership over time than just holding spot.โ€

Pantera is also an investor in medical firm Sharps Technologyโ€™s bid to create a $400 million Solana treasury, according to a press release from Sharps on Monday. And now, it seems the company is making a more direct push in the treasury space with its latest proposal. Beyond the initial $500 million, the firm also plans to raise another $750 million through warrants. If the plan comes to fruition, Solana Co. would become the largest SOL treasury in existence.

Interestingly, the report about Pantera comes just a day after another report revealed that Galaxy Digital, Jump Crypto, and Multicoin Capital are planning a $1 billion SOL treasury.

Upexi is currently the largest Solana treasury company with around 2 million tokens (about $383 million at the latest exchange rate), so the proposal from Galaxy and others would have already more than doubled the record. Now, Panteraโ€™s plan could surpass even that.

The digital asset treasury model was popularized by Michael Saylorโ€™s Strategy (formerly Microstrategy). Other companies soon followed by putting Bitcoin on their balance sheets, but recently, altcoins have started to get attention as well.

With Galaxy and partners, Pantera, and Sharps all unveiling Solana treasury plans, there now seems to be a real shift in institutional momentum behind the cryptocurrency.

So far, treasury companies have added around 0.75% of the SOL circulating supply to their holdings, according to data from institutional DeFi solutions provider Sentora (previously IntoTheBlock).

From the chart, itโ€™s visible that the same figure sits at more than 9% for Bitcoin and about 3.4% for Ethereum. Thus, it seems SOL is still quite early in the treasury push.

SOL Price

At the time of writing, Solana is floating around $190, down over 3% in the last 24 hours.

๐Ÿ Free Devcon Ticket Award

This award was designed to recognize long-term contributions made by local community members. Juin Chiu and Kimi Wu have interpreted and translated numerous hard research ideas from English to Mandarin, helping greatly with reducing language barriers and accelerating the spread of Ethereum knowledge. We were delighted to host Juin and Kimi at Devcon in Osaka and to see both of them again in Taipei shortly thereafter.

What’s Next?

One of Ethereum’s superpowers is the independent flourishing that occurs throughout its vast and vibrant ecosystem. Countless local Ethereum communities around the world are a big part of why Ethereum feels simultaneously global and personal for so many people.

Accordingly, the EF is continuously experimenting with ways to support communities around the world. We’re excited to apply what we’ve learned with our recent Korea, Japan, and now Taiwan focused grants programs in order to expand this concept even further.

Thank you to all of the community contributors who help make blockchain knowledge more accessible, thereby facilitating innovation, Ethereum adoption, and sharing Ethereum’s spirit around the world!

BlackRock launching a SOL ETF in first wave would be 'messed up' โ€” Analyst https://earlybirdsinvest.com/blackrock-launching-a-sol-etf-in-first-wave-would-be-messed-up-analyst/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/blackrock-launching-a-sol-etf-in-first-wave-would-be-messed-up-analyst/#respond Sat, 09 Aug 2025 06:51:25 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/blackrock-launching-a-sol-etf-in-first-wave-would-be-messed-up-analyst/

The worldโ€™s largest asset manager, BlackRock, should not be allowed to launch a Solana exchange-traded fund (ETF) simultaneously with the US-based issuers who have already filed for one, says ETF analyst James Seyffart.

โ€œThatโ€™s messed up,โ€ Seyffart told ETF analyst Nate Geraci in a video published to YouTube on Saturday, discussing a hypothetical scenario where BlackRock โ€” despite no filing so far โ€” jumps in at the last minute with a spot Solana (SOL) ETF and launches alongside firms that applied months ago.

The smaller firms put in all the hard work, Seyffart says

โ€œThat shouldnโ€™t happen,โ€ Seyffart said. โ€œThese smaller issuers, these guys have spent so much time working with the SEC getting the paperwork right,โ€ he added.

VanEck was the first US firm to apply for a spot Solana ETF in June 2024. Other Solana ETF bidders include Bitwise, Grayscale, Invesco, 21Shares, CoinShares, Canary Capital, Franklin Templeton and Fidelity Investments.

Since the initial filing, the SEC has issued several delays in its approval decision and requested amended application forms to gain greater legal clarity on the proposed products.

However, Seyffart is leaning toward the view that BlackRock will instead launch a crypto index product tracking the spot prices of several cryptocurrencies beyond the two largest, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH).

BlackRock may swoop in if demand is high

โ€œThatโ€™s what I would do if I were BlackRock,โ€ Seyffart said.

NovaDius president Nate Geraci said BlackRock may be waiting for its competitors to launch other crypto products first in order to gauge market demand. โ€œIf the demand looks like itโ€™s going to be really good, perhaps they can just swoop in,โ€ he said.

Geraci also said that if BlackRock chooses not to file, they may be โ€œmaking a market call that it is just going to be Bitcoin and ETH and nothing else.โ€

However, Seyffart says itโ€™s not a major risk for BlackRock if they donโ€™t file for another crypto ETF as approximately 90% of the crypto market cap is in Bitcoin and Ethereum.ย โ€œEven if they donโ€™t, I donโ€™t think it is that big of a miss,โ€ he said.

โ€œIt obviously is not going to be what it is and was for Bitcoin, and like I said, Iโ€™m pretty bullish on the demand I see for index products,โ€ Seyffart said.

A fresh wave of token unlocks is set to hit the crypto market this week, with over $686 million worth of assets entering circulating supplies.

The releases are arriving just as Bitcoin (BTC) staged a fragile recovery from a sell-off last week, triggered when Galaxy Digital offloaded huge amounts of the number one cryptocurrency, sending its price tumbling from $119,000 to around $114,500.

Key Assets to Watch

According to the Tokenomist website, SUI will release 44 million tokens this week, which is about 1.27% of its supply and valued at $189.62 million. Meanwhile, Solana (SOL) will see a fresh allocation of over 465,000 coins worth $87.6 million spread out across the next seven days. Elsewhere, Ethena (ENA), one of the weekโ€™s strongest performers, after rallying more than 35%, will bring $26 million in fresh assets into circulation.

These unlocks come soon after SUI surged over 10% to hit $4, and SOL, riding a wave of institutional confidence, following its recent 66% block capacity upgrade and MetaMaskโ€™s native support integration, rebounded above $180.

Analysts are now watching for a potential move to $205, with strong support around the $190 range, where over 8 million SOL were previously accumulated. However, there is some debate on whether potential price pressure from the new batch of tokens could dampen SOLโ€™s immediate trajectory.

Jupiter (JUP) and Optimism (OP) also face significant one-time supply expansions, $32 million and $23 million, respectively. The former has gained 3.3% this week but remains down 45% year-over-year, while the latter, despite a 51% monthly surge, is trading 83% below its peak.

Best of the Rest

Other cryptocurrencies due for substantial unlocks include Kamino (KMNO), which will release over 229 million tokens, equivalent to $13.6 million, representing 7.3% of its supply. SIGN and ZetaChain (ZETA) are also set to unlock $11.7 million and $10 million worth of assets, respectively, in one-off events.

Also noteworthy is GoPlus Security (GPS), which is poised to release over 542 million tokens, a hefty 31.75% of its supply, making it one of the most diluted events of the week in relative terms.

Beyond SOL on the linear unlock front, heavy daily emissions are expected from Worldcoin (WLD), with 37.2 million tokens valued at $44.6 million, Dogecoin (DOGE), with another 0.06% of its supply valued at $22.9 million, and Official Trump (TRUMP), with a $50 million cliff unlock.

Traders should also keep an eye on Bittensor (TAO), which will be making just over 50,000 tokens available for $21.5 million, and Celestia (TIA), which has scheduled a $14.2 million token release. Avalanche (AVAX) is also preparing for an $18 million vesting event, while Morphoโ€™s lending protocol must absorb $13.5 million in newly released tokens representing 2.18% of its circulating supply.
