Ethereum’s Beacon Chain recorded a major slashing event on Sept. 10, with 40 validators penalized for pushing conflicting attestations.

Initial reports pointed to validator nodes tied to StakeFi, Allnodes, and SSV Network. However, further on-chain investigation showed that most affected operators were connected to Ankr.

Beacon Chain reported that one validator was “slashed’ 0.3 ETH, which was worth roughly $1,300 at the time. If similar losses occurred across the group, the cumulative penalty could exceed $52,000.

What went wrong?

Slashing occurs when validators act against consensus rules, often by publishing contradictory attestations.

Preston Vanloon, an Ethereum core developer, explained that such errors usually appear when validator keys are run across multiple environments. In that situation, nodes may see different views of the chain, leading to double-signing and automatic penalties.

He said:

“These validators published conflicting attestations.”

Vanloon further agreed that the issue might have stemmed from the impacted firms’ committing a blunder while migrating a validator.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum developer stressed that the validators must keep operating until they exit the network despite the fines.

According to him:

“Slashed validators are obligated to continue performing their duties until they are exited. If they are offline during the exit queue, then they will have liveness penalties applied. The slashing penalty has already been applied so it’s just the liveness penalties from here.”

Ethereum slashing

Mass slashing remains a rare occurrence on Ethereum, as evidenced by the fact that, apart from the recent one, there have only been 15 such cases this year. Migalabs’ data shows that only 525 validators have faced slashing penalties since 2020.

However, history shows how quickly these events can escalate and lead to steep financial losses. In November 2023, nearly 100 validators tied to Bitcoin Suisse lost almost $200,000 as they were slashed for submitting incorrect attestations.

These cases highlight how operational errors can trigger immediate financial consequences in a system that enforces consensus through economic discipline.

Solana (SOL) validators concluded the governance process for Alpenglow (SIMD-0326) on Sept. 2, positioning SOL for a potential run to $250.

The community vote tallied 98.27% in favor, 1.05% opposed, and 0.69% abstaining, with 52% of the total stake participating in the decision.

Alpenglow represents a complete overhaul of Solana’s consensus architecture, replacing the existing Proof-of-History and TowerBFT mechanisms with a modern protocol designed for performance and resilience.

Reducing transaction finality

The upgrade introduces Votor, a direct-vote-based system that finalizes blocks through single or dual-round voting processes depending on network conditions.

The protocol transformation promises to slash transaction finality from TowerBFT’s current 12.8 seconds to as low as 100-150 milliseconds.

The network achieves bandwidth efficiency gains by eliminating heavy gossip traffic that currently burdens the system.

Alpenglow’s architecture centers on direct validator communication using cryptographic aggregates to prove consensus.

Validators exchange votes directly rather than through the network’s gossip protocol, reducing computational overhead and communication costs.

Technical implementation and market impact

Alpenglow operates on a “20+20” resilience model, maintaining network liveness even when 20% of validators act maliciously and another 20% remain unresponsive.

The protocol divides time into slots with predetermined leaders responsible for consecutive periods called leader windows.

Shawn Young of MEXC Research noted the upgrade could position Solana faster than standard web search response times, potentially driving developer and institutional adoption.

Young projected that SOL could reach $215 by the end of September and $250 by the end of the fourth quarter, citing technical improvements alongside growing institutional treasury holdings that exceed $1.7 billion.

The governance process spanned epochs 833-842, including discussion periods, stakeholder weight collection, and token distribution through the adapted Jito Merkle Distributor tool.

Implementation details and timeline for network deployment remain under development as validators prepare for the consensus transition.

Economic restructuring and validator incentives

The upgrade fundamentally changes Solana’s economic model by moving voting off-chain. Validators will no longer submit vote transactions for each slot, eliminating bandwidth overhead and transaction fees.

Instead, the protocol introduces the Validator Admission Ticket (VAT), requiring validators to pay 1.6 SOL per epoch as an upfront cost to maintain economic barriers to participation.

Leaders receive compensation for aggregating and submitting vote data, earning rewards equal to the total value of all votes included in their aggregates.

Additional bonuses apply for processing fast-finalization or finalization certificates, recognizing the higher computational costs associated with these services.

This improvement positions Solana’s performance closer to Web2 application response times while maintaining blockchain security guarantees.

Ethereum’s throughput ticked up on Sunday as more validators signalled their support for increasing Ethereum’s gas limit to 45 million units, which will reduce transaction fees and enable improved network scaling.  

Ethereum’s gas limit rose to over 37.3 million units on Sunday, according to Etherscan, up almost 3% from levels late last week, while several blocks were proposed with higher gas limits.

The latest gas limit increase represents the first significant climb since February, when it was raised from 30 million to 36 million.

Improved transaction throughput

Higher gas limits mean more transaction throughput on Ethereum’s layer-1 network, and validators can automatically adjust the limit by about 0.1% per block when they signal support for changes.

Ethereum throughput ticked up to just below 18 transactions per second over the weekend, according to Chainspect. It has also risen since the last gas limit increase when TPS was around 15. 

Validators agree to “pump the gas”

The weekend gas limit increase came as nearly half of all staked Ether (ETH) is now signaling support to raise the gas limit to 45 million or higher through a grassroots “pump the gas” campaign.

“Almost exactly 50% of stake are voting to increase the L1 gas limit to 45 million,” observed Vitalik Buterin on Sunday.

Currently, 47.2% of staked validators are in favor of higher gas limits, according to GasLimits.pics.

Pump the gas 

The gas limit refers to the maximum amount of gas spent on executing transactions or smart contracts in each block. Gas is the Ether fee required to conduct a transaction or execute a smart contract on the network.

Ethereum developers launched the “pump the gas” campaign in March 2024 to initially raise the Ethereum gas limit from 30 million to 40 million, which they claimed would reduce transaction fees on layer 1.

Buterin noted that recent Geth, the most popular Ethereum node client, team improvements make these scale increases safer with new archive node optimizations.

Ether activity and price continue higher

Ethereum network activity has also increased in recent months, with an uptick in daily transactions from around 1.1 million in April to current levels around 1.4 million, according to Etherscan. 

The uptick in network activity has correlated with an increase in price, with the asset gaining a whopping 54% over the past month. 

Ether topped $3,800 briefly in a seven-month high on Sunday as corporate treasuries and exchange-traded funds continue to load up.

The publicly traded Canadian firm released its operational update for last month on April 7, highlighting a month defined by strategic expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and governance involvement.

SOL Strategies Expands Stake Through Validator Acquisitions

The company’s most transformative move was acquiring three prominent Solana validators, including the highly respected Laine validator and the validator analytics platform Stakewiz.com.

The $24 million transaction was finalized on March 17 and marked a 102% increase in the company’s total SOL stake, which now stands at 3,351,617 SOL (approximately $388 million).

Accompanying the acquisition was the addition of Laine’s founder, Michael Hubbard, to SOL Strategies’ executive team as Chief Strategy Officer.

Hubbard, known for his technical expertise in the Solana ecosystem, is now spearheading the expansion of validator infrastructure and high-value institutional partnerships.

The validator acquisition also introduced key performance enhancements.

SOL Strategies reported 99.955% uptime across all validators and delivered an average APY of 7.41% to delegators, outperforming the network average.

Key Validators Align Behind SIMD-228, but Proposal Falls Short

Beyond validator operations, the company actively participated in the vote on SIMD-228, a pivotal proposal to reduce Solana’s inflation rate from 4.5% to 0.87%.

SOL Strategies publicly confirmed that all its validators voted in favor of the proposal.

While the proposal secured 61.4% support, it fell short of the two-thirds threshold needed for adoption.
