​​Microsoft has released the KB5064081 preview cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2, which includes thirty-six new features or changes, with many gradually rolling out. These updates include new Recall features and a new way of displaying CPU usage in Task Manager.

The KB5064081 update is part of the company’s optional non-security preview update schedule, which releases updates at the end of each month to test new fixes and features coming to the next month’s  Patch Tuesday.

Unlike regular Patch Tuesday cumulative updates, monthly non-security preview updates do not include security updates and are optional.

You can install the KB5064081 update by opening Settings, clicking on Windows Update, and then “Check for Updates.”

Because this is an optional update, you will be asked if you want to install it by clicking the “Download and install” link unless you have the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re they’re available” option enabled, which will cause the update to automatically install.

Once installed, this optional cumulative release will update Windows 11 24H2 systems to build 26100.5074.

The August 2025 preview update features numerous new additions that are gradually rolling out, including an updated method for displaying CPU workload metrics in Task Manager.

For years, Windows Task Manager’s Processes tab displayed CPU usage using a “Processor Utility” metric, which could display confusing or incorrect results.

The method ignored the number of cores a processor had, so a single, maxed-out core on a 16-core CPU could show overall usage at 100%. It also compared workload against the chip’s base clock speed rather than its actual operating frequency, so when turbo boost pushed cores above their regular speed, usage could spike beyond 100% and then get clipped in the display.

These quirks meant the numbers shown in the Processes tab usually did not match what was displayed in the Performance or Users tabs, or within third-party monitoring tools.

According to WindowsLatest, Microsoft has now standardized CPU reporting throughout Task Manager, with the Processes tab now using the same formula already used in the Performance and Users tabs.

The new CPU load is calculated as:

(Δ Process CPU Time) ÷ (Δ Elapsed Time × Logical Processors)

This updated CPU utilization formula is now rolling out with this update.

For users who prefer the legacy view, Microsoft has added an optional “CPU Utility” column in the Details tab. However, by default, Task Manager will now show consistent CPU metrics across the entire application.

The complete list of changes that are gradually rolling out includes:

  • [Recall] New! Recall opens to a personalized homepage that puts your recent activity and top-used apps and websites front and center, making it easy to pick up where you left off. After turning on snapshot collection, the homepage highlights key productivity features like Recent Snapshots, which show the latest snapshots to help you quickly resume tasks, and Top Apps and Websites, which display the three apps and websites you’ve used most in the past 24 hours. You can set filters in Settings to control which apps and websites are saved in snapshots. A new navigation bar on the leftmost side of the screen provides quick access to Home, Timeline, Feedback, and Settings.

  • [Click to Do] New! When you launch Click to Do for the first time, you’ll see a quick interactive tutorial. It shows how to complete tasks faster by demonstrating actions on both text and images—such as summarizing large blocks of text or removing image backgrounds. To revisit the tutorial later, select More options  > Start tutorial.

  • [General] New! When an app requests access to location, camera, microphone, or other device capabilities, Windows shows a redesigned system dialog box. To emphasize the privacy prompt, the screen dims slightly, and the prompt appears at the center of the screen.

  • [Taskbar] 

    • New! The larger clock with seconds is now back in the notification center, displayed above the date and calendar. To turn this option on, go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time, and turn on Show time in the Notification Center.

    • Fixed: If you accidentally click and drag your mouse across the taskbar preview thumbnail, the preview might stop working.

  • [Search on the Taskbar]

    • New! When you use Search from the Windows taskbar, a new grid view will help you more quickly and accurately identify the desired image within your search.

    • New! Search on the taskbar now provides clearer status information. If your search results are incomplete while your PC is organizing files in the background, Windows shows a notice with a link to check progress. You can dismiss the notice when you’re done. There is also a status for files and folders, so you can easily tell whether they’re available online (cloud) or stored on your device.

  • [Lock screen] New! More widget options and support for lock screen widget personalization (previously referred to as “Weather and more”) are rolling out. After initial launch with Windows Insiders in the European Economic Area (EEA), these updates are expanding to all regions. You can add, remove, and rearrange lock screen widgets such as Weather, Watchlist, Sports, Traffic, and more. Any widget that supports the small sizing option can be added. To customize your lock screen widgets, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.

  • [File Explorer] ​​​​​​​

    • New! Dividers now separate top-level icons in the File Explorer context menu.

    • New!​​​​​​​ When you’re signed in with a work or school account (Entra ID), File Explorer will display people icons in the Activity column and the Recommended section at the top of File Explorer Home. Hover over or select a person’s icon to open their Microsoft 365 Live Persona Card, which shows who they are and how they’re connected to the file.

    • Fixed: If you try to use the unblock open in Properties for a file, it still shows as blocked when you open Properties the next time.

  • [Windows Hello]

    • New!​​​​​​​ As part of the enhanced passkey features released in September 2023, you’ll see a redesigned Windows Hello interface. These modernized visual updates support fast, clear communication that appear across multiple authentication flows, including the Windows sign-in screen, passkey, Recall, the Microsoft Store, and more.

       The Windows security credential experience for passkey offers a cleaner, more intuitive interface designed to support fast, secure sign-in. You can now easily switch between authentication options such as passkeys or connected devices.

    • Fixed: Windows Hello might recognize your face on the login screen, however it would still fail and then prompt you to enter your pin. If you continue experiencing issues, you might need to go to the Facial Recognition section under Settings Accounts >Sign-in options and select Improve recognition.

    • Improved: Fingerprint login after standby is now more robust.

  • [Settings] 

    • New!  Windows activation and expiration prompts match the Windows 11 design and appear as system notifications when action is required. There also have been improvements to messaging under Settings > System > Activation.

    • New! You can go to Settings > Privacy & security > Text and Image Generation to see which third-party apps have recently used generative AI models provided by Windows. You can also choose which apps are permitted to use them—putting you in charge of your device’s AI experience.

    • New! As part of the Copilot+ PC experience, the agent in Settings helps you quickly find and change settings. Initially available on Snapdragon®-powered Copilot+ PCs, agent in Settings now supports AMD- and Intel™-powered Copilot+ PCs. It currently works only when your primary display language is set to English.

    • Fixed: Settings might crash if you attempt to add a security key under Settings > Account > Sign-in options.

  • [Task Manager] New! Task Manager now uses standard metrics to show CPU workload consistently across all pages, aligning with industry standards and third-party tools. If you prefer the previous view, you can enable a new optional column called CPU Utility in the Details tab to display the earlier CPU usage value shown on the Processes page.

  • [Widgets]

    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​New! Multiple dashboards are now available in your Widgets Board. This gives you more space for your favorite widgets and helps you stay informed with a feed that connects you to current events. A new navigation bar on the left side makes it easy to switch between your widget’s dashboard and other views like the Discover feed. After initial launch in the EEA, these updates are expanding to all regions.

    • New!  A new visual experience is available for the Discover feed on the Widgets Board. The layout is more organized, personalized, and engaging. Copilot-curated stories are now included, offering a well-rounded view of each topic with summaries, videos, and images from trusted MSN premium publishers. To customize your feed, go to Widgets > Discover dashboard > Personalization settings.

The good news is that some fixes or improvements in the KB5058502 update are available immediately:

  • [Device management] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that prevented some system recovery features from working properly due to a temporary file sharing conflict. This affected certain device management tools and disrupted key functions on some devices.

  • [File system]​​​​​​​ Fixed: An issue in Resilient File System (ReFS) where using backup apps with large files could sometimes exhaust system memory.

  • [Input]  

    • Fixed: This update addresses an issue with the Chinese (Simplified) Input Method Editor (IME) where some extended characters appear as empty boxes.

    • [Fixed This update addresses an issue that prevents typing on the touch keyboard when using the Microsoft Changjie, Microsoft Bopomofo, or Microsoft Japanese Input Method Editors (IMEs). The issue occurs after switching to a previous version of the IME.

  • [Performance] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that slows application installation on ARM64 devices. Some installers might take longer to complete.

Microsoft reports two known issues with this release: a bug that causes incorrect CertificateServicesClient (CertEnroll) errors to appear, and lag/stuttering in audio and video performance when using Network Device Interface (NDI) to stream or transfer feeds between PCs.

The company is now rolling out a fix for the CertificateServicesClient (CertEnroll) errors , but it is gradually rolling out over the next four weeks.

A new report from Bitget has revealed that crypto adoption trends are shifting from speculation to spending.

Based on an online survey of 4,599 participants from the Bitget Wallet community, the data showed that over 35% use it for daily transactions, gaming, and travel.

A Global Shift

The study shared with CryptoPotato had respondents outlining their digital asset payment preferences across categories. The data was then analyzed to identify global patterns, generational behaviors, and regional differences.

Worldwide, the top use cases are gaming at 36%, daily purchases at 35%, and travel bookings at 35%. Further, 32% of participants said they have adopted these assets for digital products, with the same percentage spending them on gifting, while 30% put them in education.

Crypto wallet use also includes luxury goods, utility bills, subscriptions, real estate, car leases or purchases, and healthcare services.

Overall, people prefer incorporating digital assets in their daily spending (35%) over online shopping (31%). These findings indicate that users are integrating virtual currencies into practical and everyday expenditures.

East Asia had the leading global interest in digital products and daily purchases, each accounting for 41%. On the other hand, Southeast Asia dominated gaming, with 41%, and gifting, with 36%. This trend is driven by a young, mobile-first population and widespread adoption of play-to-earn (P2E) models alongside a strong digital gifting culture. The region has also shown high openness to in-store QR payments.

In the Middle East, users showed interest in gaming (41%), luxury goods (31%), and car purchases (29%), suggesting cryptocurrency is used for high-value spending in regions with strong purchasing power and regulatory support.

Meanwhile, Africa ranks highest for education payments, reaching 38%, driven by the continent’s demand for cross-border access to learning and the need to overcome gaps in traditional banking infrastructure.

In Latin America, 38% of people utilize crypto for digital product purchases and 35% for online shopping. Additionally, 41% of users in the region reported having wallets for on-chain yield generation to preserve and grow value amid weakening fiat currencies.

Elsewhere, Western and Eastern Europe both rank top in travel bookings at 37%, with the latter also leading in real estate payments (29%). On the other hand, North America and Oceania show balanced use, with gaming and daily spending at 33%.

Use Cases Across Age Groups

The survey also collected data on the spending habits of different generations. About 39% of Gen Z prefer digital assets for gaming, 35% for gifting, and 29% for entertainment subscriptions. This group values fast, user-friendly, and social payment experiences.

Bitget revealed that 36% of Millennials preferred using on-chain funds to settle travel costs, with 35% favoring it for gaming and digital products. According to the study, this group has largely adopted virtual currencies for both convenience and value, especially in cross-border payments and mobile services.

Gen X used crypto the most in travel bookings, with about 40% reportedly doing it. Some 36% used it for digital product purchases and online shopping. They also use such assets for utility bills (30%) and real estate (30%). This generation focuses more on secure and practical spending, often for larger or essential purchases.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Toni Wahrstätter, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, have put forth a proposal that will cap the maximum gas a single transaction can use. The proposal, EIP 7983, claims:

“By implementing this limit, Ethereum can enhance its resilience against certain DoS [Denial of Service attack] vectors, improve network stability, and provide more predictability to transaction processing costs.”

The latest proposal is a modified version of EIP 7825, which was introduced in November last year but has since stagnated.

The proposal will limit gas usage for individual transactions to 16.77 million gas

The proposal aims to enforce a maximum limit of 16.77 million gas for any single transaction, nearly half of the 30 million gas limit proposed in EIP 7825. This limit, according to Buterin and Wahrstätter, will be applicable irrespective of the block gas limit set by miners or validators.

Implementation of this proposal will see transactions specifying a gas limit above 16.77 million gas get invalidated. This means that during transaction validation, transactions exceeding the gas limit will be rejected and excluded from the transaction pool. Similarly, during block validation, any block that contains a transaction that exceeds the set gas limit will become invalid.

Buterin and Wahrstätter’s chosen 16.77 million gas limit will provide a “balance between allowing complex transactions while maintaining predictable execution bounds,” as per the proposal. The authors added:

“This value enables most current use cases, including contract deployments and advanced DeFi interactions, while ensuring consistent performance characteristics.”

When implemented, the proposal will require users and decentralized applications (dApps) to split transactions with higher gas limits into smaller operations. However, Buterin and Wahrstätter expect the limit to impact a minimal number of users and dApps since most current transactions fall well below the proposed limit.

Why setting a transaction gas limit matters

Ethereum’s current architecture allows transactions to theoretically consume the entire gas limit of a block. This architecture carries several risks.

For instance, allowing a single transaction to consume most or all of the block gas limit can make it easier for miscreants to execute DoS attacks. In DoS attacks, bad actors try to overwhelm a network through a barrage of spam transactions. This causes the network to fail to provide service to genuine users.

According to the proposal, the absence of a transaction gas limit can also lead to uneven load distribution and affect network stability.

Having variable gas usage can also cause an imbalance in load distribution across transactions in a block. Furthermore, high-gas transactions also cause longer block verification times, which can impact user experience.

Benefits of setting a transaction gas limit

According to Buterin and Wahrstätter, limiting the gas usage limit of single transactions can help reduce the risk of single-transaction DoS attacks. Essentially, the limit will set a guardrail that prevents malicious actors from using the network’s bandwidth through large spam transactions.

The limit would also ensure that gas is allocated fairly across transactions in a block, the proposal stated. The cap is also expected to make the validation of blocks “more predictable and uniform.”

The most important benefit, however, would be enhanced compatibility with zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs). Encouraging transactions with hefty gas limits to be broken up into smaller chunks “allows better participation in distributed proving systems,” and enables “more predictable zkVM circuit design,” the proposal stated.

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is entering a new growth phase, combining its legacy as a fast and efficient payment network with growing traction in decentralized finance and tokenization.

According to data from Dune Analytics, weekly payment transactions have grown by more than 430% in under two years to over 8 million this year.

These payments account for nearly two-thirds of all chain activity, reinforcing XRPL’s ongoing role as a high-throughput, low-cost settlement layer.

The growth is fueled by the network’s efficient design of fast finality, low transaction fees, and built-in support for real-world asset tokenization. XRPL’s built-in regulatory-friendly features make it an appealing option for enterprise use cases.

A major catalyst behind this growth has been the integration of stablecoins. Ripple’s RLUSD and Circle’s USDC have gained traction, joined by other options like EURØP, USDB, and XSGD. These additions have expanded XRPL’s ecosystem and reinforced its role in cross-border payments.

Notably, institutional players such as the European Central Bank have explored using XRP for payment flows within distributed ledger and wallet solutions.

XRPL’s rising DeFi activity

Meanwhile, XRPL is also nurturing a budding DeFi sector with a total value locked now nearing $60 million, according to DeFiLlama data.

While this is significantly dwarfed by the billions locked on rivals like Ethereum, XRPL developers argue that the network is the bedrock of innovation.

Panos Mekras, co-founder of Anodos Finance, a leading DeFi platform built on XRPL, said:

“The XRP Ledger pioneered most of the properties we now take as granted in the space. From deflationary tokenomics and burning, to DeFi features and DEXs, tokenization, payments, and more. This is the OG that started DeFi and most in the industry don’t know about it.”

Dune Analytics pointed out that the XRPL is hosting one of the longest-running decentralized exchanges, powered by a native order book rather than smart contracts.

The platform also boasts features like auto-bridging and native liquidity pools, which have kept the DEX functional.

Still, its adoption considerably lags that of its rivals. It averages around 2,300 daily traders compared to the 10,000 addresses Uniswap, the largest DEX, averaged this year.

However, that could change as momentum builds following a slew of recent updates, including an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible sidechain, which is expected to open XRPL to Ethereum-native decentralized apps.

Moreover, other improvements, such as enhanced cross-chain capabilities, batch transactions, token escrow, and permissioned DEXs, will likely drive increased network activity and position XRPL as a key player in the evolving DeFi landscape.

TL;DR: Ethereum will use at least ~99.95% less energy post merge.

Ethereum will be completing the transition to Proof-of-Stake in the upcoming months, which brings a myriad of improvements that have been theorized for years. But now that the Beacon chain has been running for a few months, we can actually dig into the numbers. One area that we’re excited to explore involves new energy-use estimates, as we end the process of expending a country’s worth of energy on consensus.

There aren’t any concrete statistics on energy consumption (or even what hardware is used) as of yet, so what follows is a ball-park estimation of the energy consumption of the future of Ethereum.

As many people are running multiple validators, I’ve decided to use the number of unique addresses that made deposits as a proxy for how many servers are out there today. Many stakers could have used multiple eth1 addresses, but this largely cancels out against those with redundant setups.

At the time of writing, there are 140,592 validators from 16,405 unique addresses. Obviously this is heavily skewed by exchanges and staking services, so removing them leaves 87,897 validators assumed to be staking from home. As a sanity check, this implies that the average home-staker runs 5.4 validators which seems like a reasonable estimate to me.

Power Requirements

How much power does it take to run a beacon node (BN), 5.4 validator clients (VC), and an eth1 full-node? Using my personal setup as a base, it’s around 15 watt. Joe Clapis (a Rocket Pool dev) recently ran 10 VCs, a Nimbus BN, and a Geth full node off of a 10Ah USB battery bank for 10 hours, meaning that this setup averaged 5W. It is unlikely that the average staker is running such an optimised setup, so let’s call it 100W all in.

Multiplying this with the 87k validators from before means that home-stakers consume ~1.64 megawatt. Estimating the power consumed by custodial stakers is a bit harder, they run tens of thousands of validator clients with redundancy and backups.

To make life easy, let’s also just assume that they use 100W per 5.5 validators. Based off of the staking infrustructure teams I have spoken to, this is a gross over-estimate. The real answer is something like 50x less (And if you are a custodial staking team consuming more than 5W/ validator hit me up, I’m sure I can help you out).

In total, a Proof-of-Stake Ethereum therefore consumes something on the order of 2.62 megawatt. This is not on the scale of countries, provinces, or even cities, but that of a small town (around 2100 American homes).

For reference, Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus on Ethereum currently consumes the energy equivalent of a medium-sized country, but this is actually necessary to keep a PoW chain safe. As the name suggests, PoW reaches consensus based off of which fork has the most “work” done on it. There are two ways to increase the rate of “work” being done, increase the efficiency of mining hardware and using more hardware at the same time. To prevent a chain from being successfully attacked, miners must be doing “work” at a rate greater than an attacker could. As an attacker is likely to have similar hardware, miners must keep large amounts of efficient hardware running to prevent an attacker from out-mining them and all this hardware uses a lot of power.

Under PoW, as the price of ETH and the hashrate are positively correlated. Therefore, as as the price increases, in equilibrium so too does the power consumed by the network. Under Proof-of-Stake, when the price of ETH increases, the security of the network does too (the value of the ETH at-stake is worth more), but the energy requirements remain unchanged.

Some comparisons

Digiconomist estimates that Ethereum miners currently consume 44.49 TWh per year which works out to 5.13 gigawatt on a continuing basis. This means that PoS is ~2000x more energy efficient based on the conservative estimates above, which reflects a reduction of at least 99.95% in total energy use.

If energy consumption per-transaction is more your speed, that’s ~35Wh/tx (avg ~60K gas/tx) or about 20 minutes of TV. By contrast, Ethereum PoW uses the equivalent energy of a house for 2.8 days per transaction and Bitcoin consumes 38 house-days worth.

Looking Forward

While Ethereum continues to use PoW for now, that won’t be the case for much longer. In the past few weeks, we have seen the emergence of the first testnets for The Merge, the name given to the moment Ethereum switches to from PoW to PoS. Several teams of engineers are working overtime to ensure that The Merge arrives as soon as possible, and without compromising on safety.

Scaling solutions (such as rollups and sharding) will help further decrease the energy consumed per-transaction by leveraging economies of scale.

Ethereum’s power-hungry days are numbered, and I hope that’s true for the rest of the industry too.

Summer is generally a slow time for OpenSim, and virtual worlds in general, as people spend more time outside and on vacation and educational projects go on break.

The total number of active users went down by more than 3,700, to 43,001.

DigiWorldz, for example, lost 1,220 actives this month, according to its stats reports, as well as 21 regions.

In addition, several grids did not report any stats this month, including German Grid, which had 235 actives last month, German World Grid, which previously reported 623, and The City, which reported 265 actives in July.

But the total land area of OpenSim’s public grids rose by nearly 1,494 region equivalents this month, and OpenSim grids registered a total of 1,545 new users.

We are now tracking a total of 2,675 public grids, of which 311 are active and 244 published their statistics this month. This month, OSgrid was the largest grid by land area, with 33,203 standard region equivalents, while Wolf Territories Grid was the most active, with 6,733 unique logins over the past 30 days.

Our stats do not include most of the grids running on DreamGrid, a free easy-to-use version OpenSim, since these tend to be private grids.

OpenSim is a free, open-source, virtual world platform, that’s similar to Second Life and allows people with no technical skills to quickly and cheaply create virtual worlds and teleport to other virtual worlds. Those with technical skills can run OpenSim worlds on their servers for free using either DreamGrid, the official OpenSim installer for those who are more technically inclined, or any other distribution, while commercial hosting starts at less than $5 a region.

The biggest change on this list was the addition of Virtual Vista Metaverse, a new grid in our database, which had a strong launch.

Online marketplaces for OpenSim content

There are currently 20,965 product listings in Kitely Market containing 41,073 product variations, 35,835 of which are exportable.

Kitely Market has delivered orders to 628 OpenSim grids to date.

As you can see in the above chart, nearly all the growth in Kitely Market has been in content that can be exported to other grids — that is the green area on the graph. The red area, of non-exportable content, has stayed level for the past eight years.

The Kitely Market is the largest collection of legal content available in OpenSim. It is accessible to both hypergrid-enabled and closed, private grids. The instructions for how to configure the Kitely Market for closed grids are here.

Kitely has recently upgraded its version of OpenSim to allow for faster start-up times and better compatibility with scripts imported from Second Life.

Kitely is also continuing its $90 sale on Mega Worlds.

New grids

The following 11 grids were marked suspended this month: Butschiland, Butschiland, Destiny Grid, Fire and Ice Grid, Galactic Virtual, IMA Metaverse Depot, KoolPheller Estates, The Public World, Tropical Isle, UCI Mondego vLab, and Virtual RBM.

If they don’t reappear online again soon, they will be marked as closed in future reports.

Sometimes, a grid changes its login URI or website address — if that’s the case, email me and let me know and I’ll update my database.

All region counts on this list are, whenever available, in terms of standard region equivalents. Active user counts include hypergrid visitors whenever possible.

Many school, company, or personal grids do not publish their numbers.
