SWAPPING THE EVM FOR RISC-V?: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared a new proposal that would radically overhaul the system that powers its smart contracts. Buterin’s suggestion, which he posted on Ethereum’s primary developer forum, involves replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine, the software engine that powers programs on the network, with RISC-V, a popular open-source framework that offers built-in encryption and other benefits. The EVM has long played an essential role in Ethereum’s development. Other chains that use it can seamlessly connect with apps on Ethereum, and developers on EVM-based networks can transition more smoothly to building applications directly within the Ethereum ecosystem. Buterin argued that transitioning Ethereum to a RISC-V architecture will “greatly improve the efficiency of the Ethereum execution layer, resolving one of the primary scaling bottlenecks, and can also greatly improve the execution layer’s simplicity.” — Margaux Nijkerk Read more.

MATTER LABS SUED FOR ALLEGED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEFT: Matter Labs, the company behind layer-2 blockchain ZKSync, has been sued by BANKEX, a defunct digital asset banking platform, for intellectual property theft. According to a complaint filed Mar. 19 with the New York State Supreme Court, former BANKEX employees Alexandr Vlasov and Petr Korolev allegedly stole the company’s technology to start Matter Labs, which received over $450 million in venture capital funding and has become a major player in the blockchain industry. The complaint, which names BANKEX CEO Igor Khmel and the BANKEX Foundation as plaintiffs, alleged BANKEX was approached by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in 2017 to build operational software for “Plasma,” a technology that was seen at the time as a way to make Ethereum cheaper to use. — Margaux Nijkerk Read more.

SCROLL EUCLID UPGRADE BRINGS IN STAGE-1 DECENTRALIZATION ERA : Scroll, the Ethereum layer-2 network, shared that it has launched its Euclid upgrade, which the team called its most significant protocol transformation to date.According to Scroll Labs, a key consequence of the upgrade is that it transitions Scroll from a “stage 0” to a “stage 1” rollup, meaning the network will retire some centrally-controlled safety features in an effort to become more decentralized. “Euclid represents the biggest leap forward for Scroll since its inception,” the team wrote in a blog post shared with CoinDesk. “It’s a statement about Scroll’s future and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the ZK Rollup arena.” — Margaux Nijkerk Read more.

EIGENLAYER ‘SLASHING’ FEATURE FINALLY GOES LIVE: Almost one year to the day after Ethereum protocol EigenLayer launched its “restaking” network to unprecedented industry fanfare, the network is finally adding a core feature that was, until now, glaringly absent: “slashing.”Eigen Labs hopes slashing — EigenLayer’s system for keeping “restakers” honest by revoking collateral if they act maliciously — will finally realize the year-old protocol’s original pitch. “We are happy to say now that the whole promise has been delivered,” said EigenLayer founder Sreeram Kannan. — Sam Kessler Read more.

$220,764 Stablecoin Swap Ends in Disaster for DeFi Trader https://earlybirdsinvest.com/220764-stablecoin-swap-ends-in-disaster-for-defi-trader/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/220764-stablecoin-swap-ends-in-disaster-for-defi-trader/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 22:29:27 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/220764-stablecoin-swap-ends-in-disaster-for-defi-trader/

On March 12, a crypto trader lost over $215,000 in a sandwich attack while swapping stablecoins.

Michael Nadeau, The DeFi Report founder, reported in a post on X that the trader attempted to exchange $220,764 in USD Coin

but ended up with just $5,271 in Tether

$1.00

after a maximal extractable value (MEV) bot exploited the transaction.

The bot took advantage of the Uniswap v3

block builder, “bob-the-builder.eth”, while keeping $8,000 in profit.

Initially, Nadeau criticized Uniswap, suggesting the platform’s design allowed these attacks to happen. However, after discussions with Uniswap CEO Hayden Adams and other community members, he acknowledged that the exploited transactions did not originate from Uniswap’s official front end.

A blockchain expert known as @TheDEFIac on X pointed out that the same trader, or someone using multiple wallets in a similar way, had been caught in at least six sandwich attacks. All these transactions followed the same route—funds borrowed from Aave

Two of these incidents took place on the same day, with different wallets losing $138,838 and $128,003 in separate swaps. Both transactions happened within minutes of each other and followed the same pattern as the larger $220,764 loss.

BTC-e Operator Released in US-Russia Prisoner Swap https://earlybirdsinvest.com/btc-e-operator-released-in-us-russia-prisoner-swap/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/btc-e-operator-released-in-us-russia-prisoner-swap/#respond Sun, 16 Feb 2025 07:14:20 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/btc-e-operator-released-in-us-russia-prisoner-swap/

Russian national Alexander Vinnik, previously convicted for running a multi-billion-dollar money-laundering operation through his BTC-e crypto exchange, has been released in a prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States.

In return, Moscow freed American schoolteacher Marc Fogel, who had been detained on drug charges.

Vinnik’s Role in BTC-e and Legal Troubles

Vinnik operated the BTC-e platform from 2011 to 2017 when he was arrested by police in Greece at the request of American law enforcement agencies.

According to the U.S. Justice Department, the exchange processed transactions worth more than $9 billion across six years, much of which was allegedly tied to crimes such as ransomware attacks, drug trafficking, and identity theft.

Authorities claim that BTC-e’s lack of anti-money laundering (AML) and Know-Your-Customer (KYC) policies made it attractive to cybercriminals.

Vinnik was extradited to France in 2020 and sentenced to five years for money laundering. He was later sent back to Greece before finally being handed over to the Americans in 2022.

In May 2024, the Russian pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and faced up to 20 years in prison. During his trial, prosecutors accused Vinnik of facilitating over $120 million in losses and described BTC-e as a “significant cybercrime and online money laundering entity.”

Millions of dollars worth of assets belonging to the platform were seized, including $90 million that authorities bagged in New Zealand. Additionally, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed a $120 million fine on the exchange, with Vinnik personally facing a $12 million penalty.

A Long-Running Extradition Battle

Before his transfer to the U.S., the 45-year-old had been at the center of an international legal battle involving France, Russia, and the United States.

While Russia sought his extradition on lesser fraud charges amounting to just $11,000, France and the U.S. pursued him for broader financial crimes. In 2023, his lawyers tried to include him in a U.S.-Russia prisoner swap involving journalist Evan Gershkovich, but it was unsuccessful.

His exchange for Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia, marks a rare moment of cooperation between the two countries, especially coming against the backdrop of the ongoing Ukraine war. Vinnik will have to forfeit tens of millions of dollars in assets as part of the deal.

Trump May Swap Crypto Council For Summits – Insider Blames Ripple https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trump-may-swap-crypto-council-for-summits-insider-blames-ripple/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trump-may-swap-crypto-council-for-summits-insider-blames-ripple/#respond Fri, 14 Feb 2025 15:50:39 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trump-may-swap-crypto-council-for-summits-insider-blames-ripple/

US President Donald Trump’s administration may be shelving plans for a formal “Crypto Council” in favor of a series of informal summits featuring a rotating cast of industry leaders. The change, first reported by Unchained Crypto on February 13, is thought to reflect both strategic policy considerations and an attempt to defuse growing internal tensions across the digital asset industry.

Crypto Council On Ice, Summits In Play

According to Unchained, three anonymous sources familiar with the administration’s decision-making process revealed that these proposed summits would likely tackle distinct policy issues, ranging from banking and payments to data centers and Bitcoin (BTC) mining.

In a portion of its report, Unchained stated: “The Trump administration may not launch a formal ‘crypto council’ after all. Instead, the White House will likely gather a rotating group of crypto leaders for a series of ‘summits’ on specific crypto policy issues, according to three sources familiar with the decision-making process.”

It remains unclear how many summits the White House is considering or exactly when they would take place. Two of the sources told Unchained Crypto that industry trade associations have been weighing in on potential formats and discussion topics.

The prospect of these ad hoc summits appears to stem from the Trump team’s desire to steer clear of power struggles within the broad crypto ecosystem. Industry players have increasingly splintered into factions, including “Bitcoin maximalists,” proponents of decentralized finance (DeFi), backers of centralized exchanges, and others with differing visions of integration with traditional finance.

Many in the digital asset space had previously expected the launch of a “presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets (the ‘Crypto Council’).” That expectation was fueled by a December post from President Trump on Truth Social in which he described plans for an advisory group “composed of luminaries from the Crypto industry.”

Under the initial proposal, Crypto and AI Czar David Sacks would serve as chair, and former congressional candidate Bo Hines would act as executive director. While Hines has kept a low profile since December, one unnamed source told Unchained that he has been meeting with lawmakers and lobbyists in Washington to assess alternatives. According to this same source, the summits could be explained to the public as “a no-brainer way to have America’s brightest minds weigh in on their areas of expertise.”

Not everyone sees the pivot as a purely strategic move. In Unchained’s coverage, one unnamed individual expressed skepticism: The summits might be “purely a way to avoid conflict” and could allow Trump to gather insider information “he could use to make money for himself.” Another source described Trump’s personal crypto ventures, including the TRUMP memecoin and involvement in World Liberty Financial, as “an embarrassment.”

Just last week, The New York Post leaked several potential candidates for the Trump administration’s Crypto Council. Among them were former Kraken general counsel Marco Santori, Ripple co-founder Brad Garlinghouse, podcast host Frank Chaparro, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, and Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek.

Is Ripple To Blame?

Fueling rumors further, Andrew Parish (@AP_Abacus), founder of x3, shared what he claimed was a statement from an alleged insider. Parish’s posted on X: “Should be obvious at this point. And sources confirming late last night: ‘Ripple pressed too hard, no chance XRP makes it into any fed level reserve,” and ‘Focus remains on Bitcoin and best path to an SBR […] ‘SBR isn’t simple, will take time; have to avoid law of unintended consequences […] Trump is smart, trusts Bitcoin first thesis.’”

These remarks suggest that Ripple’s lobbying—or perceived overreach—might be pushing the Trump administration away from giving Ripple a prominent role in government-level discussions. However, Parish’s posts are based on anonymous sources and remain unverified.

Several prominent figures in the Bitcoin community have offered their take on the rumored developments. Julian Fahrer, co-founder of Apollo, stated via X: “Trump is considering abandoning the Crypto Council. Not surprising. Imagine what Ripple’s contribution has been so far: ‘Here’s our plan for dumping XRP on the American people in perpetuity.’ Shocking that this brain trust isn’t working out!”

Meanwhile, Steven Lubka, Head of Swan Private, also posted on X: “Ripples posturing may have nuked the entire crypto council with Trump leading towards summits instead.”

At press time, XRP traded at $2.54.
