As governments prepare to tighten control over stablecoins, some users may turn to less regulated, privacy-focused versions instead.

These alternatives, often called “dark stablecoins“, could attract users who want to avoid government tracking or restrictions.

Traditionally, stablecoins have appealed to those who prefer fewer rules. However, lawmakers, especially in the US, are working on stablecoin rules that treat these tokens more like bank-issued money.

In a May 11 post on X, CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju said that if stablecoins start operating under strict government control, users may be forced to provide documents to move funds or face taxes taken automatically by smart contracts. He added:

People who used stablecoins for big international transfers might start looking for censorship-resistant dark stablecoins instead.

Ju described several ways this type of private coin could exist. One method would be to build a decentralized coin that uses algorithms to manage its value, rather than holding real-world assets like dollars or gold. This kind of coin could follow the price of a regulated stablecoin, like USDC

, by using “data oracles like Chainlink

“.

Another option could be stablecoins created by countries that do not place limits on financial transactions. There is also the chance that Tether, which runs the USDT

Binance introduces stricter compliance measures for South African users https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binance-introduces-stricter-compliance-measures-for-south-african-users/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binance-introduces-stricter-compliance-measures-for-south-african-users/#respond Wed, 23 Apr 2025 16:39:18 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binance-introduces-stricter-compliance-measures-for-south-african-users/

Binance is implementing new compliance measures for users in South Africa, effective April 30.

According to an April 23 statement, the changes will require all its South African users to provide detailed information about the sender and receiver of any crypto transfer on the platform.

The firm added that users initiating withdrawals must enter the recipient’s full name, country of residence, and, if applicable, the name of their crypto exchange.

Binance users must verify the sender’s details for incoming deposits. This process involves checking the deposit page for any pending transactions, after which a prompt will request the sender’s full name, country, and exchange of origin if relevant.

The exchange stated that a failure to provide accurate information may result in the transaction being blocked or returned to the original sender.

Binance said the update is part of its effort to align more closely with South African regulatory expectations and ensure uninterrupted service within the region.

Binance’s global compliance efforts

The move in South Africa is part of Binance’s broader effort to reinforce regulatory compliance across its global operations.

Last week, the exchange launched a re-verification process in India to strengthen user identification and meet national anti-money laundering (AML) standards.

The new KYC process in India applies to both current and new users. It requires them to submit official documents, including their Permanent Account Number (PAN).

According to the exchange:

“This is as per the Indian anti-money laundering (AML) laws and these requirements equally apply to all exchanges in India.”

This comes in response to regulatory actions against Binance in 2024, when India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) issued a $2.2 million penalty for AML violations and ordered the Binance app removed from the Apple App Store.

Since then, Binance has registered with the FIU and resumed efforts to bring its operations in India back in line with legal requirements.

Pumpfun fully restores streaming feature with stricter moderation policy https://earlybirdsinvest.com/pumpfun-fully-restores-streaming-feature-with-stricter-moderation-policy/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/pumpfun-fully-restores-streaming-feature-with-stricter-moderation-policy/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 18:13:39 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/pumpfun-fully-restores-streaming-feature-with-stricter-moderation-policy/

Solana-based token launchpad Pump.fun resumed its livestreaming functionality for all users on April 11, implementing a new set of moderation rules and enforcement mechanisms to curb misuse.

The livestream feature has been suspended since Nov. 25, 2024, due to widespread abuse and the platform’s inability to manage user-generated content at scale.

In the announcement, Pump.fun confirmed that livestreaming is now available platform-wide with “industry standard moderation systems” and transparent content guidelines.

The relaunch follows a limited rollout on April 4, when the feature was reintroduced to 5% of users for testing under the new compliance framework.

New policies

The reinstated livestream policy includes a defined list of prohibited content, including graphic violence, threats, sexual exploitation, harassment, doxxing, unauthorized use of intellectual property, and any material promoting terrorism or illegal activity.

Content involving youth endangerment or child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is strictly banned and will be subject to further action, such as referral to law enforcement where applicable.

In a public statement, the company emphasized the policy’s intent to preserve “creativity and freedom of expression” while minimizing harmful or illegal behavior. Pump.fun noted that the moderation framework will evolve based on input from users, moderators, and policy experts.

Violations may result in livestream termination or permanent account suspension. Users may appeal moderation decisions, although the platform reserves final authority over content rulings.

Livestream controversy

The livestream function, launched in May 2024, had previously become a driver of user engagement by allowing memecoin creators to interact directly with investors in real time.

However, its rapid adoption led to serious misuse. Notably, creators began hosting extreme challenges tied to token performance, including stunts involving firearms and threats of self-harm.

One widely reported incident involved a creator who threatened suicide if their token failed to reach a specified valuation. This prompted calls from industry figures for Pump.fun to take the feature offline.

At the time of the suspension, the Pump.fun team said it had doubled its human moderation workforce and was building automated systems to detect violations, noting parallels to challenges mainstream social platforms face.

The platform said it would reinstate livestreaming only once its moderation infrastructure could support wider use. Pump.fun now requires creators to follow its published moderation policy and use appeal mechanisms where needed.

EIOPA Calls for Stricter Crypto Rules Than Stocks or Real Estate https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eiopa-calls-for-stricter-crypto-rules-than-stocks-or-real-estate/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eiopa-calls-for-stricter-crypto-rules-than-stocks-or-real-estate/#respond Fri, 28 Mar 2025 23:24:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eiopa-calls-for-stricter-crypto-rules-than-stocks-or-real-estate/

A European regulator has suggested that insurance companies should keep enough funds to match the full value of any crypto assets they hold.

This idea comes from the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), which shared its proposal with the European Commission on March 27. The aim is to reduce the risk to policyholders, as digital assets are known for their unstable prices.

Unlike other types of investments, such as real estate or company shares, crypto assets would need to be fully backed under this plan.

EIOPA put forward four possible options for handling crypto risks. The first option was to make no changes. The second would apply an 80% risk level, which means insurers would need to keep capital equal to 80% of their crypto holdings. A third option raises that to 100%. The final option would look at the risks of tokenized assets broadly.

If adopted, the proposal would introduce stricter rules for crypto than for traditional investments. Under current EU regulations, real estate holdings by insurers are backed at 25%, while stocks fall between 39% and 49%. A 100% rate would set a much higher bar for crypto.

Still, EIOPA believes this would not lead to higher costs for people with insurance. The regulator said that the added requirement would improve protection without making insurance more expensive.

Meanwhile, Lisa Gordon, chair of investment bank Cavendish, recently suggested taxing crypto and reducing stock fees. Why? Read the full story.

New Nebraska Law Puts Crypto ATMs Under Stricter Oversight https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-nebraska-law-puts-crypto-atms-under-stricter-oversight/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-nebraska-law-puts-crypto-atms-under-stricter-oversight/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 18:07:41 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-nebraska-law-puts-crypto-atms-under-stricter-oversight/

Nebraska has introduced new regulations to curb fraud at cryptocurrency ATMs, following a surge in scams linked to these machines across the US.

The new law, known as the Controllable Electronic Record Fraud Prevention Act, was first presented by Senator Eliot Bostar on January 22.

It requires crypto ATM and kiosk operators to be licensed under Nebraska’s Money Transmitters Act and to register with the Department of Banking and Finance. Operators must also submit quarterly reports detailing machine locations, business names, and transaction data to improve oversight.

Governor Jim Pillen signed the bill into law on March 12, which emphasized the state’s commitment to crypto innovation and consumer protection. He stated in a post on X, “Cryptocurrency is an important, emerging industry, and we’ve been working hard to build Nebraska into a cryptocurrency leader”.

The law limits daily transactions to $2,000 for new users and $5,000 for existing customers, while fees cannot exceed 18% of the transaction amount. It also provides fraud protections—new users who report scams within 90 days are eligible for a full refund while existing users can recover fees lost to fraud.

Furthermore, crypto ATM operators must display fraud warnings and appoint a compliance officer to enforce security measures. These changes follow a broader effort to regulate the industry, as Illinois recently saw over 1,200 crypto ATMs shut down after similar legislation was introduced.

Meanwhile, Senator Cynthia Lummis recently reintroduced the BITCOIN Act. How does this version differ from the original? Read the full story.
