Musical artist Drake made a lyrical reference to Bitcoin (BTC) in a new song released on Saturday titled “What Did I Miss?”

The hip-hop artist previously wagered $1 million in BTC on the outcome of the 2022 Super Bowl, the championship American football game, between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams.

Drake’s reference to Bitcoin, and the hallmark volatility of the supply-capped asset, appears in the first verse of the song:

“I look at this shit like a BTC, could be down this week, then I’m up next week. I don’t give a fuck if you love me. I don’t give a fuck if you like me. Askin’ me ‘How did it feel?’ Can’t say it didn’t surprise me.”

References to Bitcoin in songs, long-running television shows, and other popular art forms signal the digital asset is growing in popularity, as it breaks into mainstream culture and inches toward mass adoption.

When will Bitcoin mass adoption finally happen?

In 2022, Bitcoin mining hardware provider Blockware predicted that global adoption would hit 10% by 2030. The company based its forecast on the adoption curve of previous paradigm-shifting technologies including automobiles, electricity, and the Internet.

River, a BTC financial services company, released a report in March 2025 showing that approximately 4% of the global population holds BTC, and the digital currency still accounts for less than 1% of its total addressable market in terms of adoption.

The report also found that developed nations tended to have higher rates of adoption than developing countries.

Institutional Bitcoin adoption has been a major theme of the current market cycle, with companies like Strategy and Metaplanet reorienting themselves to become Bitcoin treasury companies.

Other institutions have taken on small amounts of Bitcoin to protect their corporate reserves from inflation, hedge against geopolitical risks, and protect against the fragmentation created by de-globalization.

Bitcoin investment vehicles, including exchange-traded funds (ETFs), have been major drivers of institutional and retail exposure to Bitcoin, which remove the technical barrier to entry of self-custody and onchain transactions.

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Mann recently shared the story of how earning millions in Ethereum (ETH) during a one-hour sale of his NFTs eventually became a “tax nightmare.”

Mann has published one song a day over the past 17 years and released his 6,000th song on June 5, which was about the purported nightmare resulting from the sale.

In 2022, he sold 4,000 songs worth 13 years of work within 60 minutes for a total of roughly $3 million in Ethereum. He retained the earnings in Ethereum instead of converting to dollars.

However, a week later, market price slipped below $3,000, shrinking the sale’s dollar value.

Tax nightmare

The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) treats revenue earned directly in crypto as ordinary income at the moment of receipt, he owed a massive tax obligation even though his assets were no longer worth the same dollar amount.

The tax man calculated Mann’s tax obligations based on the $3 million initial valuation rather than on subsequent lower prices.

Mann had already accumulated $1 million in 2021 obligations linked to earlier NFT mints and airdrops, including Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and ConstitutionDAO tokens.

To cover part of that balance, he borrowed $400,000 against 518 ETH through the Aave lending platform. However, little did he know that his collateral was about to evaporate.

The LUNA collapse

However, the May 2022 collapse of the Terra ecosystem cut the collateral’s value from $1.5 million to about $200,000, forcing a last-minute repayment that left Mann with 163 ETH and a net capital loss of roughly $1.3 million.

IRS notices during 2023 and 2024 cited unpaid income tax of nearly $1.1 million and threatened asset seizure. Mann recounted that at the time he was “dreading” the only option he had left to solve his dilemma – selling his “autoglyph.”

He wrote:

“My Autoglyph.

Minted April 8th, 2019.

(Day before my birthday)

It cost $36.

And this wasn’t just an NFT.

Matt Hall and John Watkinson (of Cryptopunks fame) had made something special. The day after the mint, I turned mine into music. John built a custom “glyph to midi” tool because of it.

It was a piece of my soul from when 50 people knew what NFTs were.

By 2024, it was worth over $1 million.”

The sale offset the losses from his borrowing and helped him clear his tax obligations. As a conclusion to his story, Mann urged creators to convert crypto from NFT sales to dollars.

He wrote:

“The moral for every NFT creator: SELL. THE. ETH. IMMEDIATELY.”

This will match revenue with prospective tax liabilities. He cited using the protocol 0xSplits to automatically convert half of NFT proceeds into USDC to reduce exposure to price swings.

Anthropic Blamed for AI-Generated Source in Song Lyrics Legal Battle https://earlybirdsinvest.com/anthropic-blamed-for-ai-generated-source-in-song-lyrics-legal-battle/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/anthropic-blamed-for-ai-generated-source-in-song-lyrics-legal-battle/#respond Sun, 18 May 2025 21:18:20 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/anthropic-blamed-for-ai-generated-source-in-song-lyrics-legal-battle/

A legal dispute involving Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) firm, has taken a new turn after one of its researchers cited what appears to be a non-existent academic paper, according to a May 14 report by Reuters.

The reference was included in a court filing by Olivia Chen, a data scientist at the company, as part of its defense against a lawsuit from major music publishers.

Universal Music Group, Concord, ABKCO, and others filed the suit in October 2023, claiming that Anthropic used song lyrics without permission to train its AI model, Claude. The list of artists whose work was allegedly used includes Beyoncé, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys.

Chen’s filing referred to a paper said to be published in The American Statistician. She said it helped show that Claude only repeats copyrighted lyrics in rare situations.

However, at a hearing in San Jose on May 13, the publishers’ lawyer, Matt Oppenheim, said the article was completely made up. He noted that he did not think Chen invented the source herself, but may have used Claude to generate it.

Anthropic’s legal representative, Sy Damle, responded that the issue seemed to be a mistake in referencing, not a made-up source. He also criticized the plaintiffs for bringing it up late in the process.

Judge Susan van Keulen pointed out that a simple mistake is very different from an AI-generated false source. The judge did not allow immediate questioning of Chen but ordered Anthropic to file a formal response by May 15.

On May 12, Jamie Lee Curtis, an American actress, criticized Meta and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. What happened? Read the full story.
