Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 home screen One UI 8

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

One UI has been with us for six years now, and it’s easily the best Android skin Samsung has made. One UI is smoother, more reliable, and easier to use than Samsung Experience or TouchWiz, the skins that preceded it. Aside from a blip with One UI 7, it’s been updated quicker than ever, often beating other Android skins.

The features One UI delivers have made it my favorite flavor of Android since I first used it on my Galaxy S10 Plus, but there are still things I’d like to change. Motorola, OnePlus, and others have added exciting features to their Android skins, and I’d love to see some of them adopted by Samsung in the next version of One UI.

Which of these featurs would you like to see most on Samsung phones?

Motorola: Intuitive gestures

It’s hard to believe it’s been twelve years since the original Moto X hit shelves. That phone, along with the Moto G, shaped Motorola’s future over the following decade, and one of the best things it introduced is what the company now calls Kinetic Gestures. The ones I want most are the two that started it all — Fast Torch and Quick Capture.

On a Motorola phone, performing a double karate chop toggles the torch on or off, something that’s incredibly useful when you’re fumbling with keys in the dark and need to add some light to the situation. I use this a lot on my 2023 Razr Plus, where this gesture is much faster than unlocking the phone and swiping through quick settings.

Quick Capture opens the camera or switches between the front and rear lenses if the camera is already open. This gesture requires a double flick of the wrist, and once you get used to it, it’s the easiest way of quickly launching the camera so you don’t miss an important shot.

Motorola: Easy customisation

One UI has plenty of theming options, more than Motorola does, but it’s all split across too many different menus and apps. Theming icons is in Theme Park, fonts are in the settings menu, and the Material You colors are in a menu accessed from the home screen. It’s even worse on Samsung’s Z Flip series, where all of the options for the cover screen are spread across even more menus. It adds too much friction to customising your Samsung phone.

Motorola has gone about things in a simple, thoughtful way. All of the options for themes, icons, fonts, home screen grid sizes, and the cover screen are in a single place. Long-press the home screen, open the personalise menu, and there are all of the options you could ever need. Sure, I miss some of the more advanced tweaks from One UI, but Motorola’s approach of listing everything together is more approachable for users.

Pixel: Now Playing

Google Pixel 9a now playing history

Ryan Haines / Android Authority

Now Playing is one of those small features that you don’t think about until you use a phone that doesn’t have it. I used a Pixel 9 Pro as my daily phone recently, the longest I’d used a Pixel since I owned a 3XL, and it reminded me how many subtle quality of life features you get on Pixels. Knowing what song is playing in the background wherever I am, without having to ask my phone to do it, is more convenient than the alternative.

The Now Playing history is great, too. I’ve planned to listen to a song that I’ve heard and searched for when out and about, only to forget what the song was by the time I get home. Now Playing keeps a history of the songs it hears, so I don’t have to rely on my memory.

Pixel: Call Screening

Google Pixel 8a call screening

Andy Walker / Android Authority

Pixel 8a

Call Screening debuted on the Pixel 3 in 2018, but I never got to experience it as it didn’t come to the UK until 2021. When I used it with the Pixel 9 Pro recently, I couldn’t believe how much better it is than Samsung’s alternative. Samsung’s Call Assist can do the basics of screening calls, transcribing the conversation, and live translation. But it’s the extras that Google has added to Call Screening over the years that Samsung can’t keep up with.

Call Screening on Pixels can wait on hold for you and notify you when the person you’re calling comes back, tell you how long the average wait time is for a call to a business, and even map and label phone tree options. Samsung is off to a good start with Call Assist, but there’s a lot more work to be done.

OnePlus: Screenshot pixelation

One plus image pixel

Zac Kew-Denniss / Android Authority

I take a lot of screenshots in this line of work, and I often need to censor things like my email, address, and other personal information. One UI does have a blur and pixelation tool in the gallery, but it’s a manual process that can be quite messy if you don’t have an S Pen to make things easier. OnePlus and Oppo devices have an AI-powered auto mode that applies a neat blur to what it identifies as sensitive information.

It isn’t perfect. In the example above, I had to censor two elements that it missed manually, but that was much less painful than having to do the whole thing myself, and features like this will only improve with updates.

OnePlus: Open Canvas

OnePlus debuted Open Canvas on the OnePlus Open, and since then, it’s come to many of the company’s devices. It’s a new approach to window management on mobile that is more intuitive and makes the most use out of the space available on a screen. Before OnePlus introduced this, One UI had my favorite multitasking system, but Open Canvas blows it out of the water.

Google has taken some inspiration from Open Canvas, adding a 90:10 split to multi-window that you can try in One UI 8 on the Fold 7, Flip 7, Flip FE, and the S25 series running the beta. It’s an improvement, but still doesn’t come close to what OnePlus is doing, and I’d love to try Open Canvas on a big screen, like my Galaxy Tab S10 Plus.

One UI 9 needs to impress

Galaxy S25 red black background

Zac Kew-Denniss / Android Authority

One UI 8 feels like a stop-gap update. One UI 7 made a lot of big changes to Samsung software, most of which were welcome, but the delayed and fragmented update rollout left a bitter taste. One UI 8 is shaping up to have a much smoother release, but there’s almost nothing new here to be excited about. It feels like One UI 8 received only minimal changes so that Samsung could push it out the door quickly and act as damage control for last year.

One UI 9, whenever we see it, needs to give us something to be excited about, and looking to other OEM skins for inspiration, drawing on what Motorola, Google, and OnePlus users love about their phones, would be a good place to start.

Please note that I am still taking a hiatus from blogging; I only wrote this blogpost because it was the most convenient way to share a lot of detailed information, in a way people can easily refer back to. Don’t get me wrong, Primfeed is great, but stuff tends to disappear from people’s feeds very quickly, whereas a blog is more permanent! Thanks.

Have you read my first review of the LAQ Era2 SupremeUHD heads? The Elle Era2 Head from LAQ Was the Excuse I Needed to Upgrade My Avatar (please note this review was written in June 2024, before Mallory Cowen’s time-limited giveaway of free SupremeUHD heads/HUDs).

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the big news among freebie fashionistas in Second Life is that Mallory Cowen, the proprietor of LAQ, has decided, for a limited time, to give away her Erea2 SupremeUHD heads and associated HUDs for free. We do not know long Mallory intends to do this, but we can probably assume that it will be at least until the end of the Dove’s Dream shopping event, which ends April 10th, 2025.

At the time of this writing, there are three locations where you can pick up these free heads (the male James Era2 SupremeUHD head/HUD and the female Elle SupremeUHD head/HUD):

If you have been on the ball, you should have picked up no less than nine free or inexpensive female SupremeUHD skin fatpacks (i.e. all skin tones) for that free LAQ Elle SupremeUHD head which so many of you have been getting over these past few weeks:

1. the Elle skin that came with the head;

2. the Sophia skin that you get when you slap the in-store subscription sign to join the LAQ subscriber list;

3. the Emma skin (from the gift wall in the LAQ store);

4. the Eirali skin (from the gift wall);

5. the Iman skin (from the gift wall);

6. the Juliette skin (a Valentine’s Day gift, from the gift wall);

7. the Karin skin (from the LAQ booth at the Skin Fair, on now);

8. the Angelica skin (from the LAQ booth at the Dove’s Dream event, on now);

and…9. if you were on the ball, on March 12th and 13th, you snapped up the Tamara skin at the LAQ store (which was not free, but it cost only L$9 if you joined the LAQ Updates group for free; if you missed it, it’s too late now, it’s gone back to full price!). Mallory Cowen has replaced that offer with the new Stine skin, which is only L$90 this weekend if you join the LAQ Updates group—see the picture below:

Now, of course, the best match for those LAQ skin tones is body skin you purchase from the LAQ store itself (see picture 4; cost is L$300 per skin tone per mesh body brand). If you can afford to support LAQ and Mallory Cowen’s hard work (not to mention her generosity in giving away free heads and HUDs!), then you should by all means do so.

However, if you are short on Linden dollars, in this blogpost I will tell you about six different options for finding free body skin that comes pretty close to matching (if not an exact match) each of the LAQ skin tones in the fatpacks! Remember, all LAQ head skins have a built-in neck fade, which means the head and body skins do not have to be a 100% match.

First, I am going to tell you about each of the six places where you can pick up free body skin. Then, I am going to provide you with a list of which of these free body skins are a close or perfect match to each of the LAQ skin tones! As a convenience, I will also include the closest Velour Venus skin tone, which is not free, but which many people already own in at least a few skin tones.

All pictures from this point on will show you what I believe to be the best match among all the free skin options for each LAQ skin tone, using the bargain Tamara skin I picked up this week (all LAQ heads use the same skin tones, though),

Free Body Skin Option 1: Senra Jamie

The easiest option is skin which is already in your inventory—the Senra Jamie skin, which comes in six skin tones!

Free Body Skin Option 2: Nuve

Nuve offers free female body skin in 30 skin tones (human and fantasy colours) here (no group needed). This is an older version 2.0 of their body skin, but still perfectly serviceable!

Free Body Skin Option 3: Amara Beauty

Amara Beauty offers free female body skin and add-ons here (no group needed). Please note that this appears to be a temporary store location, so it might change.

Free Body Skin Option 4: Leronso

Leronso offers free body skin here (free group join). This is an older, but still perfectly serviceable, body skin, in a variety of skin tones, including some beautiful darker skin tones.

Free Body Skin Option 5: Boataom

Boataom offers an older, but still perfectly serviceable, version of their body skin for six different brands of mesh bodies here (look high up on the wall for the Group Gift sign; free group join).

Free Body Skin Option 6: LOGO Body Skins

If you picked the recent free gifts from LOGO of the Christina female head (in January 2025), or the Noelle female head (in December 2023), free body skin in 6 skin tones is included in those packages (and probably also in previous LOGO gifts, but I haven’t checked them all; be sure to get redeliveries of the older gifts, as many older heads have been upgraded to support EvoX!).

NEW March 18th, 2025! Erika Zero X2 Body Skins

I just learned there’s a brand-new update to the free Kalhene Erika Zero X mesh body, available at the N-Core/Kalhene store (exact SLURL; requires a free group join). The Erika Zero X2 (Version 3) now includes three body skins (pearl, medium, and tan), and I have included these skins in the list of matching body skins for each LAQ head skin tone, below. (Note that older versions of this freebie body had just two skin tones: medium and tan.)

Patent Battle Over NFT Displays: Watch Skins Targets TAG Heuer Smartwatch https://earlybirdsinvest.com/patent-battle-over-nft-displays-watch-skins-targets-tag-heuer-smartwatch/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/patent-battle-over-nft-displays-watch-skins-targets-tag-heuer-smartwatch/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 16:32:49 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/patent-battle-over-nft-displays-watch-skins-targets-tag-heuer-smartwatch/

A new lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas accuses luxury conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE and its subsidiaries of infringing patents owned by Watch Skins Corporation. The plaintiff contends that TAG Heuer’s Connected Calibre E4 smartwatch violates three of its U.S. patents related to NFT display and verification.

Core Allegations

Watch Skins, headquartered in Puerto Rico, alleges that TAG Heuer’s NFT-enabled smartwatch uses technology nearly identical to its own system, which authenticates NFT ownership via a blockchain wallet before displaying the relevant digital artwork on a watch face. The complaint cites TAG Heuer’s promotional materials, which describe the Connected Calibre E4 as a product that “allows you to display NFT artworks on your watch by connecting your crypto wallet to guarantee authenticity.”

According to Watch Skins, this functionality mirrors its patented platform designed to verify token ownership and enable users to buy, sell, and showcase NFTs on wearable devices. The company’s patents cover methods of retrieving and displaying NFT-based watch faces, preventing the display if the user does not hold the associated token.

Technology Background

Watch Skins says it began demonstrating its NFT display concepts in 2020, eventually launching a wearable NFT marketplace in 2021. By the time TAG Heuer introduced its NFT smartwatch features in 2022, Watch Skins claims to have already commercialized the patented technology. The complaint emphasizes that TAG Heuer’s approach of using a blockchain wallet to authenticate NFT ownership and block display for non-owners is what Watch Skins’ patents protect.

Legal Claims and Requested Remedies

The lawsuit alleges direct infringement, induced infringement, and willful infringement, arguing that LVMH and TAG Heuer continued to use and market the disputed technology “without license.” According to Watch Skins, “On information and belief, defendants continue without license to make, use, import/export into/from, market, offer for sale, and/or sell in the United States products that infringe the Patents-in-Suit.”

The company seeks a declaration of infringement, monetary damages, and a permanent injunction preventing further sales of the Connected Calibre E4 smartwatch or any other device deemed to infringe its patents.

Industry Significance

The lawsuit comes at a time when major luxury houses and consumer tech brands look to leverage blockchain features for new revenue streams. If Watch Skins’ succeeds in protecting its patents, it could force companies to negotiate licensing deals for NFT display technology—or risk litigation.

Meanwhile, TAG Heuer and other brands under LVMH’s umbrella have signaled a growing interest in Web3 applications, viewing NFTs as a way to enhance product exclusivity and customer engagement.

Known for handling high-stakes tech disputes, the Eastern District of Texas will examine whether Watch Skins’ patents are valid and whether TAG Heuer’s implementation indeed violates those claims. If the court rules in favor of Watch Skins, it may deter other wearable manufacturers from rolling out similar NFT features without thorough patent reviews.
