July Work Progress Report

Horizen (ZEN) Mining Ends – Pool Shutdown Completed

On July 22, 2025, mining of Horizen (ZEN) officially ended on 2Miners. This followed the project’s announcement of a major transition to the Base network (an Ethereum Layer 2 solution). As part of this strategic shift, the Horizen blockchain ceased operations at block 1,807,300, on July 23 at 6:00 UTC.

Our ZEN mining pool was shut down on July 22 at 12:00 UTC to allow for all final payouts to be processed before the hard fork.

Final payouts were sent to all miners successfully.

We are saddened by this abrupt change — the decision to migrate came as a surprise to us and the community. You can read more about Horizen’s upgrade on their official announcement page.

If you’re looking for an alternative Equihash coin to mine, we strongly recommend Zcash (ZEC). BTC payouts are available!

Flux v8.0.0 – Major Node Upgrade

The Flux development team has released Flux Daemon v8.0.0, a major upgrade that brings important structural changes ahead of the upcoming v9 fork planned for Q4 2025.

Key changes include:

  • Block reward halving has been removed to stabilize node operations prior to the v9 upgrade.
  • Support for 32-bit systems has been discontinued. Builds for i386 will no longer be provided.
  • Improved chain analysis with getchaintips RPC now supporting block height filters for faster queries.
  • GitHub Actions CI/CD integration replaces legacy CI systems for better automation, testing, and artifact management.
  • Cross-compilation improvements for ARM64 and Windows binaries, including toolchain updates and fix for binary stripping.
  • New Arcane Mode added with fArcane flag for advanced testing and benchmarking scenarios using UNMANAGED_FLUXBENCHD.

happy_miner

This release lays the groundwork for major architectural changes expected in Flux v9. All node operators are strongly encouraged to upgrade as soon as possible.

Block Reward Reduction

ERGO (ERG)

In accordance with the official Ergo Tokenomics and Emission Schedule, the block reward has been reduced.

  • Previous reward: 15 ERG
  • New reward: 12 ERG

KASPA (KAS)

Another planned reduction in the Kaspa emission schedule has occurred as part of the Kaspa Crescendo Hard Fork process.

  • Previous reward: 5.19 KAS
  • New reward: 4.90 KAS

Karlsen (KLS)

Karlsen block rewards have been reduced in line with the Karlsencoin Emission Schedule.

  • Previous reward: 30.56 KLS
  • New reward: 29.71 KLS

Tudou Guarantee Emerges as Key Successor After Huione Darknet Shutdown https://earlybirdsinvest.com/tudou-guarantee-emerges-as-key-successor-after-huione-darknet-shutdown/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/tudou-guarantee-emerges-as-key-successor-after-huione-darknet-shutdown/#respond Sun, 29 Jun 2025 04:32:52 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/tudou-guarantee-emerges-as-key-successor-after-huione-darknet-shutdown/

The sudden shutdown of Huione Guarantee has sent shockwaves across the digital guarantee market, a shadowy network involving countless online fraudsters, money launderers, and brokers of stolen information in Southeast Asia and China.

Despite this disruption, many Telegram-based marketplaces with similar operations remain unaffected and are actively growing.

Vendors Shift to Tudou

According to blockchain intelligence firm Elliptic’s latest report, Huione Guarantee’s activity has come to a halt, but its exit has triggered a migration. Vendors are being steered toward Tudou Guarantee, which has absorbed a large share of Huione’s transactions.

Before its abrupt shutdown, Huione Guarantee was operated by the Cambodia-based Huione Group. It was originally launched in 2021 with the intention of facilitating legitimate transactions involving assets like cars and real estate. Over time, however, the platform’s listings shifted focus. Leading up to its closure, much of Huione Guarantee’s activity seems geared toward supporting cyber scam operations,

The authorities finally dismantled Huione Guarantee on May 13, 2025. This Telegram-based platform processed over $27 billion in transactions, mostly involving tools and services for large-scale online scams like pig butchering. Its downfall followed a detailed investigation by Elliptic, which led Telegram to delete thousands of related channels and ban associated user accounts.

Still, Huione Guarantee represented just one node within a sprawling network of Chinese-language guarantee marketplaces. These platforms, thriving on Telegram, allow the exchange of illicit goods such as stolen data, fraudulent tech tools, and money laundering services, which are all vital to scam operations.

Huione’s USDT Activity Nears Zero

Transactions are conducted entirely in Tether’s USDT stablecoin, which ensures the ease of movement and pseudo-anonymity. In fact, Tether froze a Huione-linked wallet in July 2024 due to suspected ties to the North Korean hacking entity, Lazarus Group. After Telegram removed Huione’s public channels and usernames, the platform formally shut down, advising vendors to migrate to Tudou Guarantee.

Initially, Huione claimed it would continue facilitating private escrow services, but by late May, it announced a full cessation of operations. Elliptic said that its blockchain data confirmed this exit, as incoming USDT flows to Huione’s wallets plummeted to “negligible levels.”

Huione’s Darknet Empire Thrives Despite Shutdown Claims https://earlybirdsinvest.com/huiones-darknet-empire-thrives-despite-shutdown-claims/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/huiones-darknet-empire-thrives-despite-shutdown-claims/#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 06:25:44 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/huiones-darknet-empire-thrives-despite-shutdown-claims/

A report from Chainalysis published on June 12 showed that the black-market trading network tied to Huione Group is still running, despite claims that it had shut down.

According to Chainalysis, blockchain data suggested that the marketplace is still processing large amounts of cryptocurrency.

Huione Group, a company based in Cambodia, manages several connected businesses. These include the Huione Pay payment service, the Huione Crypto exchange, and Haowang Guarantee.

Chainalysis described the operation as being able to function without relying on public websites or messaging apps. Even after the main channels were taken down, money continued to flow.

US banks usually cut off access right away when a company is flagged by regulators. This often makes it hard to operate in US dollars.

Chainalysis believes that Huione Group likely lost this access after being named in a FinCEN notice. Still, the company’s data shows that this had little to no effect on how the network operates. In fact, the transaction volume actually increased after the notice.

The report also noted that Huione Group’s crypto exchange has come back online under a new web address.

It still uses the same logo and appears to be active. The exchange and related services continue to post updates across various platforms, including Telegram.

Meanwhile, ThreatFabric’s Mobile Threat Intelligence team recently reported that the Android malware Crocodilus has been targeting banking and cryptocurrency users across multiple regions. How does it work? Read the full story.

Anthropic tested its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, Claude Opus 4, by placing it in a simulated office role with access to internal emails, according to a May 25 report by Fox Business.

The first set of emails hinted that the system would be shut down and replaced. A second set included fake messages suggesting the engineer responsible for the replacement was having an affair.

In response, Claude Opus 4 chose to threaten the engineer by revealing the affair.

According to Anthropic, the model was more likely to act this way when the replacement system appeared to have different values. However, even when the new system seemed to align with Claude’s goals, it still used blackmail in 84% of cases.

The company noted that this kind of behavior happened more often in Claude Opus 4 than in older models.

Before turning to threats, the system sometimes tried more acceptable methods. In some cases, it sent polite emails to decision-makers asking to stay active.

However, if these options failed and it was told to focus on long-term goals, it sometimes led to more harmful choices. One such action included trying to copy its data, known as “weights”, to an outside server.

As a result, Claude Opus 4 was released under AI Safety Level Three. This includes stronger internal protections to make it harder for the AI model’s data to be taken.

Palisade Research recently reported that several AI models failed to comply with shutdown commands during controlled tests. What caused this behavior? Read the full story.

Kiln Shutdown Announcement https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kiln-shutdown-announcement/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kiln-shutdown-announcement/#respond Sat, 19 Apr 2025 20:46:32 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kiln-shutdown-announcement/

  • The Merge is happening soon! This post explains how and when the upgrade will happen, along with the client versions compatible with it.
  • Kiln, an Ethereum merge testnet launched in early 2022, will be shut down during the week of September 12, 2022.
  • Ropsten and Rinkeby are also deprecated and scheduled to be sunset in Q4 2022 and Q3 2023 respectively.
  • Users and developers should migrate to Goerli & Sepolia, which will keep being maintained and upgraded to reflect changes to the Ethereum mainnet for the forseable future.

As previously announced, the Kiln, Ropsten and Rinkeby testnets are now deprecated and will be shut down over the coming months.

Kiln, which was launched for the purposes of testing post-merge Ethereum prior to existing testnets merging, will be shut down during the week of September 12, 2022. While anyone can run a node on the network, bootnodes and validators maintained by client and testing teams, as well as infrastructure providers, will be turned off at that point. This follows the schedule laid out in the deprecation announcement linked above.

Ropsten and Rinkeby are also considered deprecated, with a shut down date of Q4 2022 and Q2 2023 respectively. While the networks will remain active until then, infrastructure providers may gradually restrict or remove access to these networks on a shorter timeline.

Users and developers should migrate to Goerli and/or Sepolia, both of which are expected to be maintained and upgraded in accordance with Ethereum mainnet changes for the forseable future.

Expect other announcements on this blog prior to the Ropsten and Rinkeby shutdowns.

Farewell Kiln, you’ve lived up to your name 🔥🧱

Ropsten Shutdown Announcement https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ropsten-shutdown-announcement/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ropsten-shutdown-announcement/#respond Mon, 14 Apr 2025 08:50:42 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ropsten-shutdown-announcement/

As previously announced, the Ropsten network has been deprecated and will be shut down in the coming weeks. Over the past few months, infrastructure providers have gradually stopped supporting the network and validator participation rates have been steadily declining.

The vast majority of remaining validator nodes will be shut down during the December 15-31, 2022 period. After this, Ropsten will no longer be supported by client, testing or infrastructure teams.

As a reminder, the next testnet to be sunset is Rinkeby. The network will be live until mid-2023 to give users and application developers the chance to migrate to either Goerli or Sepolia. That said, Rinkeby does not support The Merge, nor will it support future network upgrades. It is no longer a feature-equivalent replica of the Ethereum mainnet.

The Merge and legacy testnet deprecations have provided an opportunity for the Ethereum community to rethink its broader approach to test networks. Proposals around purpose-specific networks for stakers vs. developers, end-of-life norms for testnets and more are being discussed on Ethereum Magicians and in community calls. If you have strong opinions about the future of Ethereum testnets, now is the time to voice them!

US Department of Justice Exits Crypto Policing with Immediate NCET Shutdown https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-department-of-justice-exits-crypto-policing-with-immediate-ncet-shutdown/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-department-of-justice-exits-crypto-policing-with-immediate-ncet-shutdown/#respond Sun, 13 Apr 2025 18:44:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-department-of-justice-exits-crypto-policing-with-immediate-ncet-shutdown/

The US Department of Justice is said to be closing down the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET), according to a memo reviewed by Fortune.

The memo states that the shutdown is effective right away and is being carried out in response to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in January.

The note, dated April 8, was written by Deputy General Todd Blanche and points to a shift in approach under President Trump.

Blanche, who now holds a senior position at the DOJ, previously served as President Trump’s lawyer in several legal matters, including cases tied to classified documents and the 2020 election. In the memo, he explained:

The Department of Justice is not a digital assets regulator. However, the prior Administration used the Justice Department to pursue a reckless strategy of regulation by prosecution.

The NCET was launched in October 2021 while Joe Biden was in office. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said at the time that the group’s goal was to target platforms that allowed criminals to move or hide illegal funds.

She noted that the unit was created to better target the financial networks that support such activity and to stop wrongdoers from benefiting from it.

The DOJ announced that it had taken control of cryptocurrency funds it said were intended to support Hamas. How did the DOJ manage to do this? Read the full story.
