Kristin Johnson has announced that she will leave her role at the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on September 3.

Her decision to depart comes after she previously stated that she would not remain in the position through the full term, which ends in 2026.

She released a press release on August 26 expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve. Johnson mentioned that she is exploring other ways to contribute to the public good, particularly in areas that support consumers and the financial system.

Johnson also emphasized the importance of continued support for CFTC staff. She stated that the agency must be equipped to manage large shifts in financial systems and trading practices, especially when those changes impact market structure.

She reiterated her view that digital asset firms should be held to clear rules, with oversight frameworks that promote both innovation and responsibility.

During her tenure at the CFTC, Johnson focused on topics that included cybersecurity and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on financial markets.

Appointed by President Joe Biden, Johnson joined the CFTC in March 2022 and was the only Democratic commissioner serving at the time. Once she steps down, only Acting Chair Caroline Pham will remain in office.

On August 9, Bo Hines announced his resignation as head of the White House’s crypto council. What did he say? Read the full story.

PayPal’s new crypto payment service slashes international transaction fees by 90% https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypals-new-crypto-payment-service-slashes-international-transaction-fees-by-90/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypals-new-crypto-payment-service-slashes-international-transaction-fees-by-90/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 19:39:48 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypals-new-crypto-payment-service-slashes-international-transaction-fees-by-90/

PayPal has launched a new initiative, “Pay with Crypto,” aimed at streamlining global commerce and significantly reducing the cost of cross-border transactions, according to a July 28 statement.

According to the company, the service offers merchants a 90% reduction in international transaction fees compared to traditional credit card processors.

Pay with crypto

This is made possible by instant conversions from crypto into fiat or PayPal USD (PYUSD), its native stablecoin. The platform supports over 100 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, and is compatible with major wallets like Coinbase and MetaMask.

PayPal estimates that this move opens access to over 650 million crypto users worldwide, allowing merchants to tap into a rapidly growing digital asset economy.

Alex Chriss, PayPal’s President and CEO, emphasized the program’s potential to eliminate long-standing barriers in international commerce.

He said:

“Imagine a shopper in Guatemala buying a special gift from a merchant in Oklahoma City. Using PayPal’s open platform, the business can accept crypto for payments, increase their profit margins, pay lower transaction fees, get near instant access to proceeds, and grow funds stored as PYUSD at 4% when held on PayPal.”

“Pay with Crypto” consolidates fiat and crypto payments into a single interface, giving consumers flexible payment options while empowering merchants to reach global markets. It also aligns with PayPal’s broader efforts to expand stablecoin usage and drive financial efficiency.

The initiative follows recent developments, including PayPal’s partnership with Fiserv to promote global stablecoin adoption.

PayPal World

Meanwhile, the company recently launched “PayPal World,” a new platform designed to connect major digital wallets and simplify cross-border commerce.

The initiative will debut with interoperability between five key players, including PayPal, Venmo, Tenpay Global, NPCI International (UPI), and Mercado Pago.

According to the firm, this reinforces its commitment to simplified, low-cost digital commerce. Chriss said:

“These innovations don’t just simplify payments—they drive merchant growth, expand consumer choice, and reduce costs. This is the future of inclusive, borderless commerce, and we’re proud to lead it.”

The U.S. Secret Service, better known for protecting American presidents, has emerged as a major force in the fight against cryptocurrency crime, Bloomberg reported on Saturday.

Through its Global Investigative Operations Center (GIOC), the agency has seized nearly $400 million in digital assets over the past decade. Much of that sits in a single cold wallet that is now among the most valuable globally.

With digital fraud driving a majority of internet crime in the U.S., losses tied to crypto scams reached $9.3 billion in 2024, FBI data show. Investment frauds, fake platforms and extortion schemes disproportionately affect older victims, who lost nearly $2.8 billion last year. The GIOC uses open-source tools, subpoenas and blockchain analysis to trace stolen funds.

Led by attorney Kali Smith, the unit trains law enforcement globally, targeting jurisdictions vulnerable to lax oversight. A recent workshop in Bermuda underscored the risks facing crypto-friendly regions. Industry partners like Coinbase and Tether have assisted in large-scale recoveries, including $225 million in USDT tied to romance-investment scams.

“This training is part of our mission,” said Patrick Freaney, head of the New York field office. “We’ve been following the money for 160 years.”

The Global Investigative Operations Center (GIOC), a division of the US Secret Service, has recovered close to $400 million in cryptocurrency over the past ten years.

Most of these seized funds are stored in one offline wallet, which ranks among the largest government-held crypto reserves, according to a July 6 report by Bloomberg.

Using blockchain records, public information, and careful investigation, the GIOC follows the money behind online scams.

Jamie Lam, the US Secret Service’s analyst, told officials in Bermuda that fraudsters often create fake investment websites, which show small early gains to trick victims before disappearing with their deposits. To lure targets, scammers often use photos of attractive people, though the person behind the screen is usually someone entirely different.

Agents work by piecing together small details, such as website registration data, transaction links, or even minor mistakes by suspects.

In one case, a single crypto transfer pointed investigators to another wallet tied to the same scheme. In another instance, a brief lapse in VPN protection revealed a scammer’s actual location.

Kali Smith leads the Secret Service’s crypto investigations and oversees training programs in more than 60 countries. These programs help officials in other nations recognize fraud and tighten oversight, particularly in areas where financial controls are weak or where residency programs are exploited.

Smith noted that many are surprised to learn such crimes are already active in their own regions.

We are proud to work closely with the USSS on our extensive investigation into crypto fraud schemes. Using social engineering techniques, fraudsters have built trust with their victims over time, an approach commonly known as “pig slaughter.” This joint effort has resulted in the largest USSS code attack, bringing it to approximately $225 million in total.

The USSS investigation targeted sophisticated scams that prey on individuals and invited them to fake cryptocurrency investments. Victims of the pig slaughter scheme are encouraged to deposit gradually increasing amounts, but only discover that their funds have been stolen in the end.

The $225 million in question was first frozen by Tether in 2023 after being linked to pig slaughter in a US Department of Justice investigation. The stolen funds were tied to the perpetrator’s accounts in a non-craked central exchange. Identifying victims and returning funds presented challenges and required considerable knowledge of blockchain analysis.

In March 2024, we joined several cryptocurrency exchanges in an intensive week of law enforcement sprint. Compliance and research teams provided rapid, real-time response to critical information requests, and timely provision of transaction and account information helped identify nearly 500 victims. This directly assisted the USSS in obtaining an unprecedented $225 million forfeiture seizure warrant for stolen funds.

We are dedicated to working with law enforcement to protect our cryptocurrency ecosystem. Our fast response approach and meticulous record keeping reflects our continued commitment to security, transparency and protection. They also have strict policies and procedures to protect the privacy of our clients, whilst providing data when there is a legal obligation.

We continue to actively participate in efforts aimed at identifying and suspending fraud, helping victims recover, and maintaining trust within the crypto community.

“Protecting our clients is our number one priority and we are proud to support our efforts to lead to this historic recovery of stolen funds. Our strict compliance practices, cutting-edge security protocols and on-chain research capabilities reflect our deep commitment to protecting our clients’ assets and maintaining confidence in cryptographic areas. Kraken Deputy Chief Compliance Director.

If you believe you are a victim of cryptocurrency fraud, we recommend reporting your case to your local authorities and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at https://www.ic3.gov/. Your prompt reporting will help prevent future fraud.

Tokenization as a Service Explained: Real-World Applications and Business Advantages https://earlybirdsinvest.com/tokenization-as-a-service-explained-real-world-applications-and-business-advantages/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/tokenization-as-a-service-explained-real-world-applications-and-business-advantages/#respond Thu, 19 Jun 2025 12:58:16 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/tokenization-as-a-service-explained-real-world-applications-and-business-advantages/

Tokenization has emerged as a pivotal concept in the digital era, offering businesses a way to convert real-world assets and sensitive data into digital tokens. This technology is not only reshaping how assets are managed but also providing new avenues for growth, investment, and operational efficiency. As organizations seek secure, efficient, and transparent solutions, Tokenization as a Service (TaaS) stands out as a practical approach for businesses of all sizes.

Tokenization as a Service is a cloud-based offering that allows organizations to tokenize various types of assets or sensitive data without building the infrastructure themselves. The service provider manages the technical aspects, including token generation, secure storage, compliance, and integration with business processes. This approach reduces complexity, speeds up deployment, and supports a wide range of tokenization use cases.

Token development services are essential for businesses aiming to adopt tokenization. These services help companies design, create, and manage tokens that represent assets, data, or rights on a blockchain or other digital platforms. Whether it’s real estate, intellectual property, payment data, or commodities, token development services provide the expertise and tools needed to launch secure and compliant tokenization projects.

At its core, tokenization replaces sensitive information or asset ownership with a non-sensitive equivalent called a token. The original data is securely stored in a token vault, and only the token is used in subsequent transactions or processes. This method reduces the risk of data breaches and simplifies compliance with regulations.

  1. Data Collection: The business collects sensitive data or asset details.
  2. Token Generation: A unique token is created to represent the original data or asset.
  3. Secure Storage: The actual data is stored in a highly secure environment, separate from the token.
  4. Token Usage: The token is used for transactions, transfers, or data processing, while the original data remains protected.
  5. De-tokenization: When needed, the token can be mapped back to the original data by authorized parties.

Tokenization can be applied to various domains, each with its unique requirements and benefits:

  • Payment Tokenization: Replaces payment card details with tokens to reduce fraud and support secure transactions.
  • Asset Tokenization: Converts ownership rights of physical or digital assets into tradeable tokens, enabling fractional ownership and broader market access.
  • Data Tokenization: Protects sensitive information such as personal data, health records, or intellectual property by replacing it with tokens.
  • Identity Tokenization: Issues tokens that represent user identities for secure authentication and authorization.

1. Financial Services

Financial institutions use tokenization to digitize assets like stocks, bonds, and currencies, making trading more efficient and accessible. Tokenization also supports programmable money, allowing for automated payments, settlements, and compliance checks.

2. Real Estate

Tokenization enables fractional ownership of high-value properties, making real estate investment accessible to a wider audience. Investors can buy and sell property tokens on digital exchanges, improving liquidity and reducing entry barriers.

3. Art and Collectibles

Tokenizing art and collectibles allows for fractional ownership and trading of valuable items, opening up new investment opportunities for individuals and institutions. It also improves provenance tracking and authenticity verification.

4. Healthcare

Healthcare providers use tokenization to protect electronic health records and patient information, ensuring data privacy and regulatory compliance while enabling secure data sharing.

5. Supply Chain and Logistics

Tokenization brings transparency and traceability to supply chains by representing goods and documents as tokens on a blockchain. This improves accountability and reduces fraud.

6. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

SMEs benefit from tokenization by raising capital through tokenized equity or assets, accessing global investors, and streamlining operations. Tokenization also simplifies regulatory compliance and reduces costs.

1. Improved Security

Tokenization reduces the risk of data breaches by replacing sensitive information with tokens that have no exploitable value outside the system. Even if a token is intercepted, it cannot be used to access the original data.

2. Operational Efficiency

By automating processes and reducing manual intervention, tokenization streamlines business operations and lowers administrative costs. Smart contracts enable automated transactions, payments, and compliance tasks.

3. Increased Liquidity

Tokenized assets can be traded on digital platforms, providing liquidity to markets that are traditionally illiquid, such as real estate or private equity. Fractional ownership further broadens the investor base.

4. Broader Market Access

Tokenization allows businesses to reach a global pool of investors, customers, and partners by digitizing assets and offering them on blockchain-based platforms.

5. Transparency and Trust

Blockchain-based tokenization provides immutable records, improving transparency and building trust among stakeholders. This is especially important for compliance, audits, and regulatory reporting.

6. Cost Reduction

Tokenization eliminates many intermediaries, reducing transaction fees and administrative overhead. Automated processes and smart contracts further decrease operational costs.

7. Regulatory Compliance

Tokenization as a Service providers integrate compliance features such as KYC, AML, and GDPR, helping businesses meet regulatory requirements and avoid penalties.

Real Estate Tokenization

The St. Regis Aspen Resort raised $18 million by issuing security tokens representing fractional ownership of the property. Investors benefited from increased liquidity and the ability to trade tokens on secondary markets.

Art Tokenization

Maecenas, a blockchain-based art investment platform, tokenized a multi-million-dollar Andy Warhol painting, allowing investors to purchase fractional shares. The auction raised $1.7 million and demonstrated the viability of art tokenization.

Financial Bonds

Santander issued a $20 million bond on the Ethereum blockchain, managing the entire lifecycle with smart contracts. This reduced costs and complexity while improving transparency and efficiency.

SME Fundraising

SMEs have used tokenization to raise capital by issuing tokenized shares or assets, attracting global investors and reducing reliance on traditional financial intermediaries.

When selecting a TaaS provider, businesses should consider:

  • Experience in Token Development Services: Proven expertise in designing and deploying tokenization solutions.
  • Compliance Capabilities: Integration of KYC, AML, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Security Measures: Robust protection for data and tokens, including regular audits and secure storage.
  • Scalability and Flexibility: Ability to support various asset types and business models.
  • Integration Support: Seamless connection with existing systems and workflows.

What assets can be tokenized?

Almost any asset can be tokenized, including real estate, stocks, bonds, commodities, intellectual property, and personal data.

Is tokenization legal?

Tokenization is legal in most jurisdictions, but projects must comply with relevant regulations, including securities laws and data protection standards.

How does tokenization differ from encryption?

Encryption scrambles data to make it unreadable, while tokenization replaces data with a non-sensitive equivalent (token) and stores the original data securely.

Can SMEs use Tokenization as a Service?

Yes, SMEs can use TaaS to raise capital, improve operational efficiency, and access global markets without investing in complex infrastructure.

Tokenization as a Service is changing how businesses manage assets, data, and transactions. By simplifying the tokenization process and offering robust security, compliance, and operational benefits, TaaS is a valuable solution for organizations seeking to innovate and grow in the digital economy. Whether you’re a large enterprise or a growing SME, tokenization can open new opportunities for investment, efficiency, and market access.

If your business is looking to explore the benefits of tokenization or needs expert guidance in launching secure and compliant tokenization projects, consider partnering with a trusted provider. Codezeros offers comprehensive token development services to help you unlock new business opportunities and stay ahead in the digital age. Global cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has unveiled a prime brokerage service for institutional crypto traders, offering best execution, deep liquidity, financing and 24/7 white-glove support, the company said on Tuesday.

Kraken Prime offers access to liquidity representing over 90% of the digital asset market across more than 20 global venues, with round-the-clock support from an experienced account management team, according to a press release.

Trades can be executed directly from qualified custody managed by Kraken Financial, a U.S. state-charted bank, Kraken said. The platform also supports asset-backed lending, T+1 credit facilities and a seamless integration with both on and off-platform liquidity through an in-house smart order routing system, the firm said.

Crypto prime brokerage, approximate to what traditional prime brokers offer in equities, is a set of services that large exchanges and digital asset-focused brokerages have been striving to deliver for the past several years.

“Kraken Prime enters the market with a clear mandate: deliver execution quality, service depth and institutional rigor that not only meet but exceed what traditional finance expects,” said David Ripley, co-CEO of Kraken in a statement.

“Kraken Prime’s edge lies in prioritizing quality, reliability and consistency, which are especially critical in volatile markets. We may not be the first to market but we’re setting the bar for institutional crypto,” Ripley said.

Amboss launches Rails, an independent Bitcoin yield service https://earlybirdsinvest.com/amboss-launches-rails-an-independent-bitcoin-yield-service/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/amboss-launches-rails-an-independent-bitcoin-yield-service/#respond Sat, 31 May 2025 16:12:34 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/amboss-launches-rails-an-independent-bitcoin-yield-service/

Amboss, the leader in AI-driven solutions for the Bitcoin Lightning network, today announced Rails, a groundbreaking independent Bitcoin yield service. It is designed to empower businesses, custodians and wealthy individuals, according to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine. This allows participants to earn returns on Bitcoin.

Rails has also launched a secure way for liquidity providers (LPSs) to generate returns from liquidity leases and payment routings while retaining all custody of Bitcoin, but is not guaranteed. With the implementation of Amboss’ AI technology, Rails has strengthened its lighting network with more reliable transactions and larger payments.

“Rails is the transformational power of the Lightning network,” said Amboss Jesse Shrader CEO and co-founder. “It’s not just about yields, it’s about enabling businesses to strengthen their networks while earning Bitcoin. This is a key step in the evolution of Bitcoin as a global medium of exchange.”

There are two options for the service:

  • The Rails LP is designed for businesses with wealthy, custodians and Bitcoin Treasury, and requires a minimum of 1 BTC commitment per year.
  • Liquidity subscriptions are designed for businesses receiving Bitcoin payments, with fees starting at 0.5%.

Amboss has partnered with Cincorner and Flux (a joint venture between Axiom and Concorner) to bring Rails to the market. My colleagues incorporated it into both the Human Island exchange platform and the daily payment service. Flux is collaboratively focusing on moving forward with the Lightning Network’s presence in global payments. Their participation highlights the growth of industry trust in Rails as a tool to effectively scale Bitcoin.

“Rails provides a practical way for businesses like us to participate in the growth of Lightning Network,” said colleague David Boylan CFO. “We have been using the Lightning network for many years, and Rails offers a structured approach to engagement in the economy, particularly through liquidity leases and payment routing. This is in line with our goal of making Bitcoin more accessible and practical for everyday use.”

Solana reveals attestation service to supercharge internet capital markets https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-reveals-attestation-service-to-supercharge-internet-capital-markets/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-reveals-attestation-service-to-supercharge-internet-capital-markets/#respond Tue, 27 May 2025 02:12:59 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-reveals-attestation-service-to-supercharge-internet-capital-markets/

Solana Foundation introduced the Solana Attestation Service on May 23, positioning the protocol as a trust layer for what the network’s backers call “internet capital markets.”

The open-source service lets approved issuers bind off-chain credentials, such as know-your-customer results, geographic eligibility, or accreditation status, to a user’s wallet address without exposing personal data on-chain.

Attestations live inside the wallet, travel across applications, and are verified with a software development kit call.

According to the announcement, the design removes repetitive onboarding checks and eliminates the need for each project to store sensitive identity records.

Portable credentials aim to streamline compliance

The Foundation said developers can deploy Solana Attestation Service to meet regulatory obligations, gate region-specific offerings, or build reputation systems that deter Sybil attacks.

Investors can hold “KYC passports” once and reuse them for future token sales, gaming studios can issue badges linked to provable player histories, and real-world asset platforms can confirm that buyers meet accreditation thresholds before releasing digitally wrapped securities.

Identity providers in Solana’s ecosystem have already integrated the new service. Additionally, infrastructure firms plan to ingest attestation data for risk scoring and transaction monitoring.

The Solana Identity Group developed the protocol. Group members said they would publish additional identity standards and invite other teams to contribute through open-source repositories.

Rise of internet capital markets

Solana Attestation Service arrives as the Foundation and independent builders push the concept of internet capital markets.

The concept comprises a model where builders can seek funding decentralized through tokens. These tokens act as equities for the builder’s product, granting the right to receive returns.

The main venue for this new narrative is the Believe app, which lets builders present their ventures and seek funding through posts on X. Australian technology entrepreneur Benjamin Pasternak and TBH app founder Nikita Bier recently endorsed the application.

As a result, the launchpad’s native token, LAUNCHCOIN, soared 4,500% from May 11 to May 14. At the time of writing, LAUNCHCOIN has held an upside of 2,800% since May 11.

Solana’s new attestation service is central to this new crypto sector. It lets decentralized applications confirm legal eligibility without re-creating legacy databases.

Dubai agreed to allow cryptocurrency payments for government services in a deal with crypto exchange Crypto.com, taking a step toward implementing its plan for a cashless society.

Once technical details are complete, the agreement will allow individuals and businesses to pay fees using digital wallets from Crypto.com, which is licensed by the emirate’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). The platform will then convert the amounts into dirhams for payment, according to a Monday press release.

The agreement allows the government “to harness financial technology in launching a new digital payment channel on the government’s digital portals,” it said in the release. The cashless strategy is expected to add at least 8 billion dirhams ($2.2 billion) annually to the economy.

Dubai has been building its crypto credentials for several years and sees itself as a Middle East crypto hub. In March 2022, it established VARA, calling it the world’s first independent crypto regulator, and has awarded licenses to exchanges including Binance and OKX. It also initiated a metaverse strategy aiming to attract 1,000 metaverse and blockchain companies by 2030.
