Christina Marie Chapman, a freelancer from Arizona with over 100,000 TikTok followers, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after helping North Korean workers get hired by US companies using false identities.

A court in Washington, DC found her guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering.

Along with the prison time, she will spend three more years under supervision, forfeit over $284,000, and repay $176,850.

FBI Counterintelligence Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky said in a July 24 press release that she played a key part in a plan that brought in around $17 million to fund North Korea’s weapons development. He added:

Even an adversary as sophisticated as the North Korean government can’t succeed without the assistance of willing US citizens like Christina Chapman.

Starting in 2020, Chapman worked with North Korean agents to set up US-based remote jobs for overseas IT workers.

To make it seem like those workers were physically located in the US, she ran a “laptop farm” from her home. She connected dozens of company-issued computers to the internet so that remote users could log in without raising suspicion.

Officials later recovered more than 90 computers from her home. Chapman also sent 49 devices to addresses overseas, including several in a city near North Korea’s border.

Chapman moved the money through her own accounts. She also helped file tax documents and Social Security forms under the names of the people whose identities were being used.

An Arizona-based TikTok influencer has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for her role in a North Korean plot to infiltrate the U.S. tech workforce and fund the regime’s weapons program.

Key Takeaways:

  • Christina Chapman was sentenced to 8.5 years for helping North Korean IT workers infiltrate US tech jobs.
  • She ran a “laptop farm” and laundered wages, aiding over 300 job placements.
  • The scheme is part of a broader effort by North Korea to fund its weapons program.

Christina Marie Chapman, who gained popularity online for her freelance lifestyle content, was convicted in Washington, D.C. on charges of wire fraud conspiracy, aggravated identity theft, and money laundering.

In addition to prison time, Chapman was ordered to forfeit over $284,000 and pay restitution of $176,850. She will also serve three years of supervised release.

TikToker Ran ‘Laptop Farm’ to Help North Korean IT Workers Pose as US Employees

According to prosecutors, Chapman operated a “laptop farm” from her home, allowing North Korean IT workers to remotely access U.S.-based networks while appearing to be physically located inside the country.

Between 2020 and her arrest, she helped operatives obtain remote roles at more than 300 American companies, including Fortune 500 firms, a major television network, and a leading aerospace manufacturer.

“Even an adversary as sophisticated as the North Korean government can’t succeed without the assistance of willing U.S. citizens like Christina Chapman,” said Roman Rozhavsky, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division.

US authorities say North Korea has built a global network of IT operatives who use fake identities and proxy networks to secure jobs and channel funds to the regime.

Chapman’s activities helped facilitate these efforts by setting up U.S.-based internet access, laundering wages through personal bank accounts, and shipping laptops overseas, including multiple devices sent to a Chinese city near North Korea.

Investigators seized more than 90 laptops from her residence and discovered she had sent 49 more abroad.

The wages earned by the North Korean agents were misreported to the US tax and social security agencies under stolen or borrowed American identities.

The crypto sector remains a key target in this operation. According to Chainalysis, North Korean-linked hackers stole $1.34 billion in cryptocurrency in 2024 alone, up 21% from the previous year.

Cybersecurity experts say North Korean job seekers are increasingly sophisticated, often hiring European actors to front video interviews while using VPNs and proxy IPs to conceal their locations.

North Korea Linked to Major Crypto Hacks

North Korea has also been linked to several other major crypto heists, including those targeting Bybit, the Ronin Bridge, Harmony, and various DeFi platforms.

Global law enforcement is responding. The U.S. Department of Justice recently moved to seize over $7.7 million in digital assets tied to North Korean IT workers embedded in blockchain firms.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and South Korea signed a bilateral agreement in 2023 to enhance their technical capabilities in detecting and countering DPRK cyber operations.

North Korean cyber strategies continue to evolve. In April, Lazarus-linked operatives reportedly set up US-based shell companies to distribute malware to crypto developers.

Kraken recently thwarted an infiltration attempt by a suspected North Korean posing as a job candidate.

When the National Crime Agency arrested co‑founder Thomas White in 2014, they seized 97 BTC from him. In 2017, investigators noticed that 50 BTC from the seized wallet had been moved to another address without explanation.

The investigation assumed White had somehow regained access to his wallet. However, he said only someone inside the agency could have done it.

They discovered that the missing Bitcoin had been sent through a service called Bitcoin Fog. From there, the funds were moved to exchanges and loaded onto crypto debit cards.

Records showed that the cards were used to spend more than £109,000, while the total benefit to Chowles was estimated to be over £613,000.

Chowles’ role had given him direct access to White’s seized devices and accounts. During a follow‑up investigation, police found a phone linking him to the transfers and notebooks in his office containing login details and other information about White’s crypto accounts.

Crypto market maker Gotbit and founder sentenced for fraud, manipulation https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-market-maker-gotbit-and-founder-sentenced-for-fraud-manipulation/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-market-maker-gotbit-and-founder-sentenced-for-fraud-manipulation/#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 20:08:18 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-market-maker-gotbit-and-founder-sentenced-for-fraud-manipulation/

Gotbit Consulting LLC, a prominent cryptocurrency market maker, was sentenced in federal court for criminal charges related to a multi-year scheme to manipulate digital asset trading volumes, according to a June 13 press release.

Aleksei Andriunin, the firm’s 26-year-old founder and CEO, was sentenced to eight months in prison and one year of supervised release for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and market manipulation.

The Russian-Portuguese national was extradited from Portugal to the U.S. earlier this year after his arrest in October 2024.

Prosecutors say Gotbit orchestrated a sophisticated scheme between 2018 and 2024 that involved “wash trading,” which involves the use of multiple accounts to create fake trades and inflate apparent market activity, on behalf of various token issuers, including Robo Inu and Saitama.

Forfeiture and corporate shutdown

As part of a plea agreement, Gotbit was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to forfeit approximately $23 million in seized cryptocurrency.

The firm, which was based outside the United States but worked with numerous U.S.-accessible crypto platforms, is now required to cease all operations.

Gotbit’s services included generating artificial trading volume to help client tokens gain visibility on platforms such as CoinMarketCap and achieve listings on top-tier exchanges.

In a 2019 interview, Andriunin openly admitted to developing wash trading software that enabled such tactics while avoiding blockchain detection.

Cracking down on market abuse

Gotbit is the third market-making firm to be prosecuted for wash trading since 2024. Earlier cases involved MyTrade and CLS Global, both ensnared in an undercover federal operation aimed at exposing market abuse in the digital asset sector.

Gotbit’s directors, Fedor Kedrov and Qawi Jalili, remain under indictment, with criminal proceedings ongoing. Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a parallel civil enforcement action accusing Gotbit of securities law violations.

The criminal case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher J. Markham and David M. Holcomb, with asset forfeiture handled by AUSA Carol Head of the Asset Recovery Unit. The FBI’s Boston Division led the investigation.

One physician in California has skipped town after manipulating the Medicare system to defraud the government of nearly $1.5 million.

According to a new Department of Justice (DOJ) press release, 61-year-old Medicare provider Lilit Gagikovna Baltaian of Porter Ranch, CA, has been sentenced, in absentia, to four-and-a-half years in prison for healthcare fraud.

The DOJ says the fugitive issued false certifications in Los Angeles from 2012 to 2018, costing the government $1.497 million.

“From approximately January 2012 to July 2018, she falsely certified patients to receive home health care from at least four Los Angeles area home health agencies. These certifications were used by the home health agencies to fraudulently bill Medicare.

In some instances, Baltaian pre-signed blank, undated physician certification forms knowing that the home health agencies would falsify the forms to make appear that she had seen the Medicare beneficiaries and made clinical findings to support the need for home health care, when she had done neither. Baltaian received cash payments related to these referrals and also separately billed Medicare for signing the fraudulent certifications.”

Though Baltaian pleaded guilty to a count of healthcare fraud in November of last year, the physician fraudster has since disappeared, presumably on the run from the law.

An ex-Goldman Sachs banker is reportedly being sentenced to prison for his role in the massive $4.5 billion theft of the Malaysian State Investment Fund (1MBD).

According to a new report by NBC News, former Goldman Sachs employee Tim Leissner has been sentenced to two years behind bars for paying a part in the multibillion-dollar heist.

Prosecutors say that Leissner and others who worked for the banking giant aided Malaysia in raising $6.5 billion for the nation’s investment fund through bond sales. However, $4.5 billion of those funds were stolen, laundered via bribes and kickbacks, and used to purchase luxury goods and fund extravagant lifestyles.

The report says the scandal was far-reaching and led to the downfall of then-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2018, who was later convicted of crimes connected to the scheme and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Leissner is due to report to prison on September 15th. He pleaded guilty in 2018 to bribing officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi.

Says Leissner,

“The funds raised more than a decade ago could have profoundly benefited the nation and its citizens. Instead, due to my greed – and the greed of those involved alongside me – they were misappropriated.

What we did was unequivocally wrong, and I take full responsibility for my role. I deeply regret my actions, and if I could turn back time, I would undo them without hesitation.”

Leissner’s sentence includes two years of supervised release after prison and a forfeiture of nearly $44 million.

A 26-year-old man from Alabama has been sentenced to more than a year in prison for his role in a social media hack that briefly sent the price of bitcoin

soaring.

Eric Council Jr. of Huntsville pleaded guilty to charges tied to the January 2024 hack of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s X account, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

Posing as a telecom customer using a fraudulent ID, Council used a SIM-swap technique to hijack a phone number tied to the SEC’s account. His co-conspirators then used it to falsely post that the agency had approved spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a long-awaited regulatory milestone.

Within minutes, the price of bitcoin surged by more than $1,000. It crashed soon after, losing more than $2,000 in value once the post was revealed as fake. The SEC did later that month approve the launch of spot bitcoin ETFs.

Authorities say Council was paid in bitcoin for his role. He will serve 14 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Federal prosecutors called the attack a calculated attempt to manipulate financial markets. “The deliberate takeover of a federal agency’s official communications platform was a calculated criminal act meant to deceive the public and manipulate financial markets,” said Acting FBI Assistant Director Darren Cox. “By spreading false information to influence the markets, Council attempted to erode public trust and exploit the financial system”

Ex-Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Fraud https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-celsius-ceo-alex-mashinsky-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-for-fraud/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-celsius-ceo-alex-mashinsky-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-for-fraud/#respond Sat, 10 May 2025 02:33:30 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-celsius-ceo-alex-mashinsky-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-for-fraud/

Former Celsius Network CEO Alex Mashinsky was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison on Thursday.

The decision follows his December guilty plea to organizing a fraudulent scheme that misled investors and manipulated the market value of Celsius’s native token, CEL.

Sentencing Details

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, announced Mashinsky’s prison term on May 8.

“The founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Celsius Network LLC and their affiliated entities was sentenced to 12 years for committing commodities fraud and securities fraud at Celsius,” read the press release.

U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl delivered the verdict in courtroom 14A of Manhattan’s Southern District courthouse. It comes nearly five months after the former crypto executive’s guilty plea, in which he admitted to exaggerating Celsius’s financial stability and promising investors unsustainable returns.

“Alexander Mashinsky targeted retail investors with promises that he would keep their ‘digital assets’ safer than a bank,” stated U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “In fact, he used those assets to place risky bets and to line his own pockets.”

During the court session, Mashinsky acknowledged his role in artificially boosting the price of CEL tokens while quietly selling tens of millions of dollars’ worth of his holdings. The accused also agreed to forfeit the proceeds from his illegal activities.

Prosecutors had pushed for a 20-year sentence, arguing that the ex-CEO remained “unrepentant” and emphasizing the widespread damage to the crypto lender’s customers. Federal authorities also said that Mashinsky made a profit of $48 million from the scheme.

Ultimately, the 59-year-old accepted sentencing guidelines of up to 30 years and waived his right to appeal any prison term within that range as part of his plea deal.

Multi-Billion Dollar Fraud Case

Mashinsky’s legal troubles began in 2023 when he was apprehended on charges of securities, commodities, and wire fraud. His arrest coincided with Celsius’s agreement to a $4.7 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), one of the largest in the agency’s history. However, the deal is still contingent on the firm returning customer assets.

In September 2023, former Celsius chief revenue officer Roni Cohen-Pavon admitted guilt in the same case and agreed to cooperate with authorities. This provided key insights into the company’s inner operations.

His testimony contributed to the broader case brought against Celsius and Mashinsky by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for the multi-billion-dollar fraud scheme.

Although the former executive initially denied the accusations, his guilty plea and Thursday’s sentencing conclude a case that exposed serious misconduct at one of the most high-profile crypto lending firms.

A California man was sentenced to more than seven years behind bars on charges related to operating an underground drug-trafficking market powered by Bitcoin (BTC) transfers.

Federal prosecutors say John Khuu illegally imported counterfeit pharmaceutical and MDMA pills from Germany and subsequently used dark web markets to distribute the illicit substances to customers across the US.

Khuu, 29, was paid in Bitcoin and other crypto assets, which he and his co-conspirators exchanged for US currency that was then laundered and transmitted to dozens of different accounts.

The California resident was indicted in May 2022 in the Eastern District of Texas and charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering. Three months later, Khuu was also indicted in the Northern District of California and charged with unlawful importation of a Schedule I controlled substance. He was arrested by agents in Garden Grove, California a few days after the second indictment.

Khuu’s arrest was the result of “Operation Crypto Runner,” a multi-agency law enforcement effort that resulted in a batch of charges filed against 21 individuals for their alleged involvement in transnational money laundering networks.

Last year, Khuu pled guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business and importation of MDMA.

This week, U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker sentenced him to 87 months in federal prison.
