Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm’s lawyers have signaled that they may request a brief delay in his upcoming criminal trial if a judge allows testimony from a hacker who allegedly used the platform, according to July 10 court filings.

In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Storm’s defense team asked to exclude the unnamed witness, arguing prosecutors disclosed the individual after the agreed deadline.

The witness is described as the perpetrator of an alleged hack who laundered funds through the Ethereum-based mixer to obscure trails.

According to the defense:

“[The testimony] would be unfairly prejudicial as it would likely confuse and mislead the jurors into believing that Mr. Storm was involved in the underlying purported hack or intended to facilitate it, which is not true.”

Storm’s attorneys argued the testimony could provoke “an angry response” from jurors, unfairly impacting their perception of the defendant. They reserved the right to seek a continuance if the court denies the motion to exclude.

Storm’s trial is set to begin on July 14, nearly two years after he was indicted on charges of money laundering, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter, and conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions. The judge is expected to rule on the witness motions by the end of this week.

Federal prosecutors have called several witnesses “victims” of Tornado Cash-enabled crimes. In a June post on social media, Storm said:

“SDNY is trying to crush me, blocking every expert witness. If I lose, DeFi dies with me.”

The developer has received strong support from the crypto community, including Paradigm founder Matt Huang, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, and the Ethereum Foundation. Supporters have contributed considerably to his legal defense and argued that writing code should not be criminalized.

Alexey Pertsev, another Tornado Cash co-founder, was sentenced to over five years in prison in the Netherlands in 2024 for money laundering. Roman Semenov, also named in Storm’s indictment, remains at large, with reports suggesting he may be in hiding in Russia.

Storm’s trial is scheduled to begin with jury selection on Monday before Judge Katherine Failla.

Ex-Blackstone, Tether Execs Seek $1B to Build Multitoken Crypto Treasury: Bloomberg https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-blackstone-tether-execs-seek-1b-to-build-multitoken-crypto-treasury-bloomberg/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-blackstone-tether-execs-seek-1b-to-build-multitoken-crypto-treasury-bloomberg/#respond Thu, 26 Jun 2025 13:24:16 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-blackstone-tether-execs-seek-1b-to-build-multitoken-crypto-treasury-bloomberg/

A blank-check company backed by former Blackstone dealmaker Chinh Chu and Tether co-founder Reeve Collins is looking to raise $1 billion to build a publicly traded cryptocurrency treasury firm, Bloomberg reported citing sources familiar with the plans.

The vehicle, M3-Brigade Acquisition V, plans to rebrand and use the cash to buy a basket of tokens including bitcoin

, ether and Solana’s sol .

The move comes as public companies worldwide are rushing to add cryptocurrencies as treasury assets. Many, however, are focusing on bitcoin, the largest crypto by market cap, alone. Among them, Anthony Pompliano’s ProCap BTC this week said it planned to go public through a SPAC and stock up on BTC. Multitoken companies are rarer and Brigade Acquisition would be among the first.

Former Hut 8 Mining CEO Jaime Leverton will run the company. Wilbur Ross, who served as U.S. Commerce Secretary, and Gabriel Abed, Barbados’s former ambassador to the UAE and current chair of Binance’s board, will act as vice chairs.

Cantor Fitzgerald is among the advisers, and both the fundraising target and token mix could still change, Bloomberg said.

The biggest name companies with single-coin strategies include Strategy (MSTR) and Metaplanet (3350), whose focus is on bitcoin. Other single tokens firms are exploring alternative coins, for example SharpLink Gaming (SBET) accumulating ether and Nano Labs piling into BNB.

Shares of M3-Brigade fell 12% after news of the plan surfaced on Wednesday, and were recently up 5% pre-market.

Bo Hines declares the US won’t sell Bitcoin, seek endless accumulation for strategic reserve https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bo-hines-declares-the-us-wont-sell-bitcoin-seek-endless-accumulation-for-strategic-reserve/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bo-hines-declares-the-us-wont-sell-bitcoin-seek-endless-accumulation-for-strategic-reserve/#respond Wed, 28 May 2025 04:24:16 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bo-hines-declares-the-us-wont-sell-bitcoin-seek-endless-accumulation-for-strategic-reserve/

Bo Hines told the 2025 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas on May 27 that the federal government will hold every Bitcoin (BTC) already in custody and pursue additional budget-neutral ways to increase its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

Hines, who serves as the executive director of the President’s Council of Advisers for Digital Assets, described Bitcoin as “digital gold” and said the asset’s scarcity requires permanent custody.

He distinguished the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) from the broader Digital Assets National Stockpile by stressing an absolute prohibition on disposals. On March 6, an executive order signed by President Donald Trump established both concepts.

Hines added:

“We’re not going to sell any Bitcoin that we possibly have in the US government, period.”

Furthermore, he highlighted that the US recognizes Bitcoin as a commodity with “intrinsic stored value.” This status justifies a separate, single-asset reserve.

Open-ended accumulation with budget neutrality

Hines rejected the idea of a numeric target for federal holdings and clarified that there is no cap. He said:

“We want as much as we can possibly get.”

He added the reserve framework instructs officials to find “budget-neutral ways” to grow the stack, and the working group continues to study options that meet that condition.

Conference speakers suggested ways to add Bitcoin to the reserve without using taxpayer funds.

VanEck’s head of digital assets research, Matthew Sigel, shared the concept of a royalty tied to Bitcoin mining in the US. Miners would pay a fraction of their block rewards in BTC to a government wallet, streamlining the accumulation process.

Furthermore, crypto mining plants that utilize wasted methane would be exempt from taxes.

Galaxy Digital’s head of research, Alex Thorn, thinks the “quickest pathway” is to sell altcoins from the Digital Asset Stockpile and use the proceeds to acquire more BTC.

He added:

“In fact, that’s elegant, because you don’t even need to touch cash. You could sell an altcoin/BTC pair, cash never appears. There is nothing for the vultures of government to grab onto.”

BSV Investors Seek to Revive 2019 Lawsuit Against Binance Over Delisting Impact https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bsv-investors-seek-to-revive-2019-lawsuit-against-binance-over-delisting-impact/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bsv-investors-seek-to-revive-2019-lawsuit-against-binance-over-delisting-impact/#respond Sun, 11 May 2025 23:13:22 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bsv-investors-seek-to-revive-2019-lawsuit-against-binance-over-delisting-impact/

Investors in Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision (BSV) are making a renewed push to revive a 2019 lawsuit against crypto exchange Binance, alleging the platform’s decision to delist the token severely impacted its long-term value.

BSV, which currently trades around $42, is a hard fork of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), which itself forked from the original Bitcoin (BTC) network.

According to Law360, the plaintiffs are asking for the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal to revisit a July 2024 ruling that dismissed their “loss of chance” claim.

BSV Backers Blame Binance Delisting for Altcoin’s Decline

They argue that Binance’s decision to delist BSV, along with similar actions by other major exchanges, effectively suppressed the altcoin’s market potential.

The original claim sought $9 billion in damages, but the investors now say they could pursue up to £10 billion (approximately $13 billion) if the case moves forward.

The legal team contends that BSV never recovered from the delistings and continues to underperform due to lack of visibility and trading access.

Despite a 15% price bump following news of the revived legal effort, BSV remains in a persistent downtrend and has failed to gain meaningful market share or network power relative to Bitcoin.

Binance removed BSV in April 2019, citing concerns over its listing standards.

The move followed repeated claims by BSV’s creator, Craig Wright, who has long asserted—without proof—that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s pseudonymous founder.

Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao had publicly warned that Wright’s behavior could result in delisting.

Since then, BSV has also been the target of several 51% attacks, undermining trust in its blockchain’s security and stability.

These setbacks have only deepened skepticism about the project’s viability, even as its backers press ahead with legal action.

CZ Confirms Pardon Request After Initial Denial

Last week, CZ confirmed that he has formally applied for a presidential pardon, weeks after initially denying reports of such a move.

Speaking on the Farokh Radio podcast aired May 6, Zhao said his legal team filed the request following widespread media speculation.

“I got lawyers applying,” Zhao said during the interview, saying that he ultimately decided to move forward after stories from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal suggested he was pursuing a pardon from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“If they’re writing this article, I may as well just officially apply,” Zhao added.

The former crypto mogul pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act in November 2023 as part of a settlement with U.S. authorities.

The agreement led to Binance paying $4.3 billion in fines, with Zhao personally contributing $50 million.

He was sentenced to four months in prison and barred from holding any management position at Binance as a condition of the deal.

Zhao has since shifted focus to international advisory work, offering guidance to governments in Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan on crypto regulation and blockchain integration.

Trump’s First Inflation Report Due as Risk investors Seek Signs of Cooling https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-first-inflation-report-due-as-risk-investors-seek-signs-of-cooling/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-first-inflation-report-due-as-risk-investors-seek-signs-of-cooling/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2025 10:58:57 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-first-inflation-report-due-as-risk-investors-seek-signs-of-cooling/

The consumer price index (CPI) report due Wednesday will be the first under President Donald Trump’s tenure, with signs of cooling likely to raise the chance of an interest-rate cut and lift the spirits of investors in risk assets, who have been hammered in recent weeks.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is forecast to say headline inflation declined year-over-year to 2.9% from 3%, while core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also lost 0.1 percentage point to 3.2%.

Slower inflation raises the chance of an interest-rate cut, making riskier investments more attractive. CPI, which measures the cost of a basket of goods and services across the U.S. economy, has accelerated for four consecutive months.

In the past few weeks, the S&P 500 has dropped almost 10% from its all-time high and bitcoin (BTC) has lost around 30% to around $80,000.

Both Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have emphasized the need for lower 10-year Treasury yields to bring down the federal funds rate. So far, this strategy appears to be working, with the 10-year yield falling to 4.2% from 4.8%, the dollar index (DXY) weakening below 104 and WTI crude oil stabilizing in the mid-$60 range — aligning with the administration’s economic plans.

Meanwhile, the Truflation Index has hit 1.35%, its lowest level since September 2020. However, five- and 10-year inflation expectations remain above 2%, indicating that Trump still has work to do in managing long-term inflation expectations.

At the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on March 18-19, Chair Jerome Powell is expected to hold the federal funds rate steady at 4.25%-4.50%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Investors will be closely watching the inflation report, as a cooler-than-expected print could prompt the Federal Reserve to consider rate cuts. Conversely, a “hot” inflation reading would likely keep rates higher for longer and put further pressure on risk assets.
