The Devcon Scholars Program is an Ethereum Foundation initiative designed to provide an opportunity for Ethereum ecosystem-members from underserved communities, unique circumstances, or developing areas to attend the largest annual gathering in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Now in its second year, the Devcon Scholars Program provides full scholarships to many around the world to learn, connect, and grow with others in the blockchain space, culminating in an experience to attend Devcon 5 in Osaka.

In collaboration with ecosystem leaders including UNICEF Innovation, ConsenSys and Bounties Network, the Ethereum Foundation selected 50+ scholars from around the world to participate in the program. The selected scholars represent various walks of life, as well as wide-ranging levels of blockchain knowledge. Their skill sets include design, software engineering, academia, policy experience and much more. Recipients are provided travel and conference accommodations, exclusive programming, professional networking opportunities and individual guidance from a group of amazing volunteers. Scholars are invited to publish articles on the transformative potential of blockchain technology and later on their experiences at the conference. We hope that each Devcon Scholar finds a home in the Ethereum community and that the opportunity to attend Devcon helps to jumpstart a future career in this dynamic ecosystem.

Demographics of 2019 Cohort

We believe that working to increase diversity in our community is an investment in the future of Ethereum. The Devcon Scholars Program aims to promote diversity and inclusion within our burgeoning industry and to democratize access to Ethereum education.

The 2019 Devcon Scholars cohort represents individuals from 15 different countries including Afghanistan, Argentina, Egypt, Nigeria, Sweden and Syria among others. The demographic breakdown of the cohort is as follows:

• 50% of Scholars self-identify as blockchain beginners, with the other 50% identifying as intermediate or experts in Ethereum technology.

• Approximately 80% of Scholars are between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, and a majority of Scholars are female.

• The Scholar cohort identifies as 18% Hispanic or Latino, 22% Asian/Pacific Islander, 27% Black or African American, 9% White, with 24% identifying as multi-ethnic.

The Devcon Scholars Program is supported in part by generous contributions from many organizations including:

ConsenSys: $30,000 in educational programming and certification opportunities provided by ConsenSys Academy

UNICEF Innovation: UNICEF’s Boost (BST) Token is being used on the Bounties Network to teach blockchain concepts and encourage multinational engagement and to bring new voices to the ecosystem. There have been over 140 bounty submissions in July 2019 alone.

Bounties Network: Developed the bespoke ETHScholars environment and is funding the gas fees for all Scholars’ transactions throughout the program.

In the coming weeks, the Ethereum Foundation will recognize a number of Scholarship Supporters as we unveil this year’s Devcon Sponsors.

Finally, following Devcon, Bounties Network will release Devcon Scholar Videos to highlight their experiences in Osaka.

P.s. – As mentioned in our last Devcon blog, we’re running two on-chain ticket distribution mechanisms this year, with any proceeds to benefiting the Devcon Scholars Program. These will be on a relatively small scale since we’re trying out this approach for the first time, but may expand in years to come. The first is on chain auction that will employ a small fee as a Sybil resistance measure, and it will begin two days following this post and last for 48 hours. Stay tuned for more details, coming Thursday via blog and Twitter!

We are excited to announce the Devconnect Scholars Program, as part of Devconnect ARG 2025! The Scholars Program will welcome 100 leaders who are expanding Ethereum’s reach by connecting it to new communities, industries, and ideas. Scholars will co-learn and co-create, building bridges between Ethereum and other worlds. The 2025 cohort will include five categories: (1) Ethereum Community Organizers, (2) Legal & Public Sector Professionals, (3) Journalists, (4) Artists, and (5) Developers & Other Builders of any kind.

Applications are now open, until Monday, June 30th!

How the Scholars Program Works

The Program will begin in late August with online programming and conclude after Devconnect in late November. During the program scholars can expect:

(1) Financial support: Based on individual needs, Scholars are provided financial support for accommodation, flight, visa application, per diem, and/or ticket to Devconnect. (Note: Financial need doesn’t influence acceptance. Those who don’t require financial support also qualify.)

(2) Pre-Devconnect community & programming: The Scholars Program emphasizes building lasting relationships, mentorship, and a space for furthering existing skills and knowledge. There will be online sessions where Scholars meet each other, learn together, co-create, and prepare for their experience at Devconnect.

(3) Devconnect week: Spending an amazing Devconnect week in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

(4) Post-Devconnect: After the event, each Scholar will create a Learning Artifact – a free-format creation that expresses their learning and experience in the medium of their choice.

Who should apply?

To be eligible for the Devconnect Scholars Program, applicants must:

(1) Have never attended Devcon before,

(2) Have never attended Devconnect before, and

(3) Be able and willing to dedicate approximately three hours per week over the course of three months to attend online sessions, complete assignments, and actively engage in learning, collaboration, and shared creation

Yesterday, Wave #01 of Devcon tickets sold out just a few minutes after going online! After two years of anticipation, the whole team awaited this moment with curious suspense. But don’t worry, more ticket waves are coming soon.

Today we are excited to announce the return of the Devcon Scholars Program, an EF initiative to help critical Ethereum builders overcome obstacles to attend Devcon. Read below to find out if the Devcon Scholars Program is for you, and to get information on how to apply.

Additionally, we’re happy to announce the first events happening around Devcon in Bogotá, making Devcon more than just a 4-day conference but a whole Devcon Week experience.

Devcon Week comprises Ethereum-related events happening around the official conference days of 11-14 October. In homage to the decentralized organization of Devconnect, Devcon Week starts with an EthGlobal hackathon, ends with a community co-working space, and will feature events like Schellingpoint and ETH Latam Day. We’ll release more events on the Devcon Week schedule in the coming weeks!*

*This schedule doesn’t include the many community events, meetups, and social gatherings that will happen around Devcon. So expect another page coming soon that will include more on events run by the wider Ethereum community.

The Devcon Scholars Program Returns

We are pleased to announce the return of The Devcon Scholars Program!

If your attendance in Devcon VI could make a difference in the future of Ethereum, and you’re otherwise not able to attend due to cost, please apply for the Scholars Program between today and August 1st.

Devcon is the ultimate place for the builders and collaborators and it’s also an opportunity to bring new faces, places and entire communities into the fold. However, some critical builders in the Ethereum ecosystem face obstacles to attending Devcon (monetary or otherwise).

The Devcon Scholars Program provides full support to make Devcon more accessible for 50 individuals who have the potential to make a big impact on Ethereum and its community, but are unable to attend without assistance, monetary or otherwise. Scholars will receive Devcon tickets, funding for transportation, accommodation, per diem and visa application. Leading up to Devcon and during the Devcon Week, there will be online and in-person meetings for Scholars to get to know each other, to learn, and to prepare for the best experience in Bogotá, Colombia.

The Devcon Scholars Program is for you if you believe your attendance in Devcon would make a difference on the future of Ethereum. We want Devcon Bogotá to be a hub of Ethereum innovation, and for that to happen, we need the most talented builders in our ecosystem to be there, regardless of their circumstances.

We are thrilled to announce the first-ever Devconnect Scholars Program!

The Devconnect Scholars Program will provide talented and values-aligned individuals from communities currently geographically and demographically underrepresented in Ethereum with financial support to attend Devconnect in Istanbul this November.

Why The Program Exists & Program Details

For Ethereum to be a resilient and thriving protocol for human coordination – in the long term and for all humans – we believe there is a need for more diverse perspectives representing various geographies and demographics.

Scholars are expected to bring their unique viewpoints and experiences to conversations at Devconnect that help shape Ethereum’s future. After Devconnect, they will apply their learnings to their respective communities to push Ethereum’s boundaries.

Program Details

Devconnect Scholars will receive financial support for transportation, accommodation, per diem, and visa application. Additionally, there will be online and in-person meetings for Scholars to get to know each other, learn, and prepare for the best experience in Istanbul.

Selection Criteria

• We are looking for individuals with experience and/or knowledge in protocol development, web3 development, privacy, security, cryptoeconomics, UX, and governance.
• Applicants must be a member of a community that is currently underrepresented in Ethereum. We define underrepresented communities in two main categories:
  
  • Geographic: Applicants from countries that lack representation in Ethereum as well as applicants from Turkey and neighboring countries.
  • Demographic: Applicants that represent a minority gender, ethnicity, or other demographic identity that is currently underrepresented in Ethereum.

• Individuals who are unable to attend Devconnect without financial support are eligible to apply.
• Applicants must be able to attend Devconnect from November 13-19, 2023.
• Applicants must be able to communicate in English.
• The program requires a time commitment of approximately two hours per week from September to November 2023.
• Strong preference will be given to applicants who are yet to attend a large Ethereum conference (500+ people).

Bringing together builders from diverse geographies and disciplines, the Devcon Scholars Program offers more than just a scholarship to attend Devcon – it aims to build a community focused on co-learning and co-creation, to bridge Ethereum with other worlds and to push Ethereum’s boundaries. This year, we are looking to welcome up to 100 Scholars divided across four categories: (1) Ethereum Community Organizers, (2) Law Students & Legal Professionals, (3) Artists & Sci-fi Writers, and (4) Other Builders.

• A first-time Devcon attendee
• Able and willing to spend approximately three hours per week over the course of 3 months, for attending online sessions, completing assignments, etc.

We are looking for applicants in the four categories in the table below. Note that applicants can apply under multiple categories, and we strongly encourage applicants from Southeast Asia and other underrepresented communities within the Ethereum ecosystem to apply.
