Bank customers in Thailand are discovering that their accounts have been frozen, part of a government effort to disrupt financial fraud.

The operation, which began in August, has led to the freezing of approximately three million accounts. These actions target accounts suspected of being used by scammers to move stolen funds, but many people with no connection to such crimes have also been affected.

According to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, recent tactics used by scammers have made it harder for authorities to identify fraudulent accounts.

As a result, some small business owners and online sellers have seen their access to funds restricted. This has led to delays in payments, limited transactions, and disruption to daily business activities.

To stop the flow of criminal money, banks have also introduced a daily transfer limit of 50,000 baht (roughly $1,570). These restrictions apply to all customers, not just those under investigation.

The Bank of Thailand has warned that more freezes may be necessary as investigations expand. However, according to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, banks can suspend funds for up to three days, and police may extend this to seven while checks are carried out.

The situation has sparked renewed interest in digital currencies, such as Bitcoin

that came from a fraudulent online investment scheme.

The funds were traced to digital wallets tied to a fake trading platform, according to a civil complaint filed on September 5 in Albany and publicly confirmed on September 9.

The Department of Justice stated that the platform lured people into depositing money outside of its main interface.

The case outlines how those behind the scam used messaging apps to initiate contact and build trust before directing victims toward the fake exchange.

According to the filing, ten people who spoke Mandarin were first contacted through random text messages. These interactions shifted toward conversations about investing, which eventually pointed victims to a fraudulent website called ShakepayEX.

The website mimicked the design of a real Canadian exchange, which makes it seem reliable.

Once users sent their money in, they could not withdraw it. The scammers gave excuses like additional fees or new requirements, and continued asking for more money. Investigators said these tactics resulted in total losses exceeding $10 million.

Prosecutors noted that the case shows how civil forfeiture can be used to freeze stablecoin funds quickly. With help from companies like Tether, the US government is working to block such funds on-chain.

Acting US Attorney Sarcone described crypto investment fraud as a growing threat. He noted that people across the country are being targeted by schemes that operate internationally.

Venus Protocol Halts Activity After User Falls for $13.5 Million Crypto Scam https://earlybirdsinvest.com/venus-protocol-halts-activity-after-user-falls-for-13-5-million-crypto-scam/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/venus-protocol-halts-activity-after-user-falls-for-13-5-million-crypto-scam/#respond Sun, 07 Sep 2025 16:08:04 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/venus-protocol-halts-activity-after-user-falls-for-13-5-million-crypto-scam/

A user on the decentralized lending platform Venus Protocol lost $13.5 million after unknowingly approving a malicious transaction.

The attack did not exploit any flaw in Venus Protocol itself but instead took advantage of a phishing scam, where the user was tricked into giving access to their wallet.

Blockchain security firm PeckShield first reported the incident on September 2. Initially, they estimated the loss at around $27 million, but later adjusted this figure to $13.5 million after accounting for the user’s outstanding debt.

Following community concerns, Venus Protocol addressed the situation on X. The team confirmed that there was no technical issue with the platform and stated that the problem likely came from the user’s end.

When asked directly if this was caused by user error, Venus Protocol replied:

Right now, yes, that appears to be the case. We will keep everyone updated as we investigate.

The platform was temporarily paused while internal security checks were carried out.

Although Venus Protocol’s systems were not breached, the team still decided to suspend operations briefly to make sure nothing else was at risk. They also reassured users that smart contracts remained secure and fully operational.

The scam occurred around the same time as another phishing-related event. Users holding WLFI governance tokens from World Liberty Financial were also targeted in a separate wallet exploit that same day. How? Read the full story.

Scam Alert: Uniswap V4's Bunni DEX Loses Millions to Hackers https://earlybirdsinvest.com/scam-alert-uniswap-v4s-bunni-dex-loses-millions-to-hackers/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/scam-alert-uniswap-v4s-bunni-dex-loses-millions-to-hackers/#respond Tue, 02 Sep 2025 09:52:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/scam-alert-uniswap-v4s-bunni-dex-loses-millions-to-hackers/

Malicious actors in the cryptocurrency space remain a constant threat to the sector and are not moved by market conditions as they strike during bull and bearish market conditions. Within the last 24 hours, Uniswap V4’s Bunni decentralized exchange (DEX) has been attacked by hackers.

Hackers exploit Bunni DEX vulnerability

According to an update from PeckShieldAlert, a blockchain security firm that monitors the crypto space, hackers have exploited a vulnerability on Bunni DEX. This has led to the hackers stealing approximately $2.4 million worth of assets.

Critical details of who the attackers could be and the different crypto assets stolen have not been revealed. However, the theft, occurring in the midst of an ongoing bull market, is poised to affect investors who use the exchange.

As of press time, a message from Bunni on their official X handle acknowledged the “security exploit” and precautionary measures taken so far. According to the DEX, their team is currently investigating the incident and will provide details as soon as investigations are concluded.

It has, however, paused all smart contract functions on all networks while this is ongoing. Bunni has called for patience on the part of its users.

Are there security concerns over Uniswap V4 ecosystem?

The compromise on Bunni DEX by these hackers reemphasizes the need for exchanges to pay attention to safeguarding funds on their platform. This suggests that malicious actors are always scanning the crypto space and attempting to steal. Failure to secure protocols could lead to loss of funds.

Kroll, a risk and financial advisory firm, is facing a class-action lawsuit over its handling of an August 2023 data breach that exposed information belonging to creditors of FTX, BlockFi, and Genesis.

The case, filed by Hall Attorneys in a US district court, represents FTX customer Jacob Repko and other affected creditors.

The complaint argues that attackers used stolen details from the breach to launch ongoing phishing campaigns. Many creditors said they receive scam emails almost every day.

FTX creditor Sunil Kavuri shared screenshots showing repeated attempts, including several messages sent between August 14 and 17.

The lawsuit also pointed to weaknesses in how Kroll contacted creditors. The company relied only on email, a method that scammers could easily imitate. According to the filing, the method weakened trust, disrupted the claims process, and in some cases led to losses.

The plaintiffs are asking not only for damages but also for changes in Kroll’s communication methods. They argued that creditors should not be left with a single channel that criminals can copy.

Nicholas Hall, who leads Bankruptcy and Complex Litigation at Hall Attorneys, noted that affected creditors could be eligible for compensation. He added that the case could push Kroll to update its operations.

Hall also runs the FTX Claims website, which helps creditors manage their claims.

On August 11, FTX’s former users asked a court to let them update their lawsuit against Fenwick & West. What did they say? Read the full story.

Crypto investor loses $1M in Uniswap scam exploiting Ethereum’s EIP-7702 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-investor-loses-1m-in-uniswap-scam-exploiting-ethereums-eip-7702/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-investor-loses-1m-in-uniswap-scam-exploiting-ethereums-eip-7702/#respond Sun, 24 Aug 2025 02:31:35 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-investor-loses-1m-in-uniswap-scam-exploiting-ethereums-eip-7702/

A single phishing attack drained nearly $1 million worth of tokens from a crypto investor who unknowingly signed a batch of malicious transactions disguised as Uniswap swaps, according to blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer.

In an Aug. 22 post on X, Yu Xiang, founder of blockchain security firm SlowMist, noted that the incident involved five tokens siphoned through a transaction exploiting Ethereum’s new EIP-7702 mechanism.

He explained:

“From the perspective of a phished user, it goes like this: the user opens a phishing website, a wallet signature prompt pops up, the user clicks confirm, and with just that one action, all valuable assets in the wallet address vanish in a snap.”

EIP-7702 was introduced in the Pectra upgrade to streamline the Ethereum user experience. The feature allows a wallet to act like a temporary smart contract, making it possible to batch multiple transactions, enable gas sponsorship, or set spending limits in one step.

In principle, the delegation is revocable and network-specific. However, attackers have found ways to weaponize the feature in practice.

Crypto market maker Wintermute has warned that the standard’s implementation is being exploited at scale. Its June analysis showed that more than 90% of EIP-7702 delegations were linked to malicious contracts.

The firm pointed out that many of these contracts are simple copy-paste scripts that scan for vulnerable wallets and drain their holdings automatically.

Considering this, Scam Sniffer and Xiang urged crypto users to take extra care before signing wallet requests. They recommended verifying domain names, avoiding rushed confirmations, and rejecting signatures that seem unclear or overly broad.

They also stated that some of the red flags that could arise include requests for unlimited token approvals, contract upgrades under EIP-7702, or transaction simulations that do not match expectations.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has removed more than 14,000 fraudulent websites over the past two years, according to an August 21 press release.

On average, ASIC takes down around 130 sites each week. Roughly 3,015 of the blocked sites were tied to cryptocurrency schemes.

ASIC is expanding its removal efforts beyond websites to cover advertisements on social platforms. These ads often act as the entry point, which leads people from Facebook or Instagram posts to fake investment sites.

Deputy Chair Sarah Court explained:

Expanding our investment scam takedown capability to social media ads will help safeguard Australian consumers.

The regulator pointed out that investment scams remain the most damaging form of online fraud for Australians, with reported losses reaching $945 million in 2024. By targeting both scam websites and misleading ads, ASIC hopes to cut off access points before people are drawn in.

Scammers have also been refining their methods. One tactic is known as “AI washing”, where operators falsely claim their platforms use artificial intelligence (AI) to guarantee returns. They also create realistic-looking sites using polished templates, live trading charts, and fabricated news articles.

To avoid detection, fraudsters use “cloaking” techniques, which show one version of a site to reviewers while presenting another to ordinary visitors.

Recently, ASIC charged four men in Victoria for helping transfer scam funds into crypto and foreign bank accounts. How did the case unfold? Read the full story.

About $3.13 million in bank deposits has already been frozen, with more recoveries expected.

According to investigators, the accused collected money in cash, converted it into foreign currency, and used it to purchase USDT through BiXiang Technology, a local exchange.

The main suspect, Shi Qiren, was arrested in April together with thirteen associates. Reports indicate Shi could face up to 25 years in prison for leading the operation and for refusing to plead guilty. Prosecutors alleged that starting in 2024, Shi, his wife, and a business partner named Yang opened forty outlets under the names “CoinW” and “CoinThink Technology Co., Ltd”.

Officials claimed the group pretended to be the only company approved by Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission, which helped them attract more than 1,500 customers. By combining franchise fees and machine collections, they allegedly gathered nearly $72 million.

Old YouTube channels that once posted tech or crypto videos are now being used to promote a scam, according to an August 5 report from SentinelLABS.

The videos encourage viewers to copy and deploy a smart contract that promises easy trading profits.

Once the contract is activated, a wallet controlled by the scammer is added to the code. It is disguised to look like a normal trading address, so victims do not notice anything strange.

to cover gas fees, the scammer can withdraw the money.

This scam has been ongoing since at least 2024, promoted through videos shared across social media. The most recent example shows one wallet collecting 7.59 ETH, another with 4.19 ETH, and a third holding 244.9 ETH. Combined, that is about 256 ETH, worth more than $939,000.

The videos often feature generated voices and faces generated by artificial intelligence (AI). SentinelLABS said this makes it easier for scammers to quickly produce more content without revealing who they are. They also delete any negative comments and leave fake messages from people claiming they made money using the bot.

SentinelLABS researcher Alex Delamottea explained that many victims likely do not take the time to check how the smart contracts actually work. Because of this, users are often misled by instructions that appear helpful on the surface.

Delamottea advised avoiding any code shared through videos or posts that promise fast profits.

A cybercrime group named GreedyBear has stolen more than $1 million in cryptocurrency by combining several types of scams, according to an August 7 report from Koi Security.

Researcher Tuval Admoni stated that the group has moved beyond typical scams and is operating at a much larger scale.

While many attackers focus on one method, such as phishing websites or fake browser add-ons, GreedyBear spreads fake browser extensions, builds convincing scam websites, and uses harmful software to steal information from crypto users.

Koi Security found more than 150 of these fake add-ons on the Firefox extension store. They copied the appearance of crypto wallets like MetaMask, TronLink, Exodus, and Rabby Wallet.

To avoid getting caught, GreedyBear first uploads a harmless version of the extension to pass store checks. After it is approved and gets good reviews, they update it to include code that can steal users’ wallet details.

Admoni said, “These fake tools collect login details from users by pretending to be real wallet interfaces”.

The report also explained that GreedyBear has built over 650 separate tools that target people who use crypto wallets. Additionally, the group runs fake websites that look like exchanges or customer support pages. They also use malware to change wallet addresses or steal copied data during transactions.

Admoni stated in the report:

Most groups pick a lane, maybe they do browser extensions, or they focus on ransomware, or they run scam phishing sites. GreedyBear said, ‘Why not all three?’ And it worked. Spectacularly.
