The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will expand its series of crypto roundtables and take its crypto policy outreach on the road beginning Aug. 4 in Berkeley, California.

According to an Aug. 1 statement, the tour is meant to give founders and developers, especially teams with 10 or fewer employees and less than two years old, face time with the Commission outside Washington, D.C.

Crypto Task Force lead Hester Peirce stated the agency wants to hear from stakeholders who could not attend prior sessions, adding:

“The Crypto Task Force is acutely aware that any regulatory framework will have far-reaching effects, and we want to ensure that our outreach is as comprehensive as possible.”

Teams can request a slot by emailing [email protected] with the subject line “Crypto on the Road,” naming the city of interest and including one or two attendee names along with a brief description of the project and team.

To promote transparency, the Task Force plans to publish a list of participating projects.

The new “Crypto on the Road” schedule runs through December. The Task Force plans to visit Berkeley on Aug. 4, Boston on Aug. 19, Dallas on Sept. 4, Chicago on Sept. 15, New York City on Sept. 25, Irvine on Oct. 3, Cleveland on Oct. 24, Scottsdale on Oct. 29, New York City again on Nov. 12, and Ann Arbor on Dec. 5.

Dates are tentative and may shift as logistics are finalized.

Expanding efforts

The roadshow builds on the SEC’s spring engagement with industry players. The Commission held its first Crypto Task Force roundtable on March 21 in Washington.

Panelists ranging from advocates to skeptics concurred that there is a pressing need for regulatory clarity for digital assets, despite the diverging opinions on how to establish it.

Much of the debate centered on token classification and whether existing securities laws adequately address decentralized systems.

Advocates pointed to decentralization as a key gauge for determining when a token should fall outside securities laws. At the same time, skeptics argued the Howey test remains workable, noting the SEC’s track record in recent motions.

Following the first roundtable, the SEC decided to host four additional events, ranging from regulation clarity to decentralized finance’s role in US innovation.

By moving conversations into local hubs, the Commission is seeking a wider sample of real-world experience, from smart contract developers and tokenization teams to early-stage consumer apps, before it advances proposals that could define how crypto fits under federal securities law.

SEC’s crypto task force to hit the road with 10 roundtables across the US https://earlybirdsinvest.com/secs-crypto-task-force-to-hit-the-road-with-10-roundtables-across-the-us/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/secs-crypto-task-force-to-hit-the-road-with-10-roundtables-across-the-us/#respond Fri, 01 Aug 2025 22:05:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/secs-crypto-task-force-to-hit-the-road-with-10-roundtables-across-the-us/

US SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce will hit the road this fall, leading a 10-city tour as part of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s new crypto outreach initiative. The regulator announced a roundtable series on Friday aimed at gathering feedback from industry stakeholders, developers and investors as the agency weighs future digital asset rules.

“The Crypto Task Force is acutely aware that any regulatory framework will have far-reaching effects, and we want to ensure that our outreach is as comprehensive as possible,” Peirce said in a statement.

The agency’s crypto task force is “particularly interested” in meeting with crypto startups less than two years old and with 10 or fewer employees. The roundtable discussions will take place between August and December.

Many of the 2025 roundtable discussions hosted by the SEC have featured input from crypto and traditional heavyweights like a16z Crypto and asset management companies BlackRock. In its previous roundtables, the crypto task force has discussed the regulation of crypto, custody, tokenization and decentralized finance.

Founded in 1934, the SEC oversees and enforces US securities laws. While the agency had an often antagonistic relationship with the crypto industry, its approach has shifted under the administration of President Donald Trump. Enforcement actions against high-profile firms such as Coinbase, Uniswap and Kraken have been dropped, and the agency is now signaling a willingness to engage in open dialogue with players.

It is unclear whether the SEC has conducted this type of outreach before or how much it will cost. The agency receives its budget through the congressional appropriations process. Cointelegraph reached out for comment but had not received a response at time of publication.

Trump’s crypto promises gain momentum

The SEC’s initiatives come months after Trump said he would make the US the “world capital of crypto.”

On July 18, Trump signed the GENIUS Act, a bill that regulates stablecoins and their issuers, a moment hailed as a win by the crypto industry. Meanwhile the CLARITY Act, a market structure bill, has passed the House of Representatives, while the Senate is considering legislation addressing similar crypto market structure issues.

Other government agencies are also following the Trump administration’s lead. In June, the Federal Reserve cut the “reputational risk” category critics say was used to debank crypto companies. The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has eased restrictions on how banks can engage with the crypto industry.

SEC to host 4 additional crypto roundtables to tackle topics including trading, custody, DeFi https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sec-to-host-4-additional-crypto-roundtables-to-tackle-topics-including-trading-custody-defi/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sec-to-host-4-additional-crypto-roundtables-to-tackle-topics-including-trading-custody-defi/#respond Wed, 26 Mar 2025 09:51:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sec-to-host-4-additional-crypto-roundtables-to-tackle-topics-including-trading-custody-defi/

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has unveiled plans to host four more crypto-focused roundtables in Washington, D.C., as part of its broader initiative to reshape digital asset regulation.

According to a March 25 statement, these sessions will explore key areas such as crypto trading, custody, tokenization, and DeFi.

The first event, Between a Block and a Hard Place: Tailoring Regulation for Crypto Trading, is set for April 11. Discussions on custody, tokenization, and DeFi will follow on April 25, May 12, and June 6.

All roundtables will be available via live stream on the SEC’s website to encourage public engagement.

These events are part of the Commission’s ongoing effort to modernize its oversight of the crypto sector. Since launching its Crypto Task Force, the financial regulator has emphasized the need for balance—protecting investors while supporting innovation.

The initiative builds on the Commission’s first crypto roundtable on March 21. Despite varying opinions, participants shared a common demand—regulatory clarity. The dialogue emphasized the need for updated policies that better reflect the unique challenges of crypto markets.

Why SEC roundtables?

According to the SEC, the planned roundtables would help the “Commission draw clear regulatory lines, provide realistic paths to registration, craft sensible disclosure frameworks, and deploy enforcement resources judiciously.”

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, who leads the Crypto Task Force, stressed the importance of direct engagement with industry experts. She noted that the sessions offer meaningful debate opportunities, helping shape a more effective regulatory path forward.

According to her:

“The Crypto Task Force roundtables are an opportunity for us to hear a lively discussion among experts about what the regulatory issues are and what the Commission can do to solve them.”

Meanwhile, this development comes amid a dramatic shift in the SEC’s stance under the Trump administration.

The agency has dismantled its crypto-enforcement program and dropped several high-profile cases and investigations involving firms like Coinbase, Kraken, Ripple, Gemini, and OpenSea.

The changes point to a significant transition—from broad enforcement actions to a clearer, more structured regulatory environment for the US crypto industry.
